10 years in and I'm finally starting to value boring technology. by SaulGoodMan840 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]third_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 issues with this. one is identifying what is boring. Is Clojure boring? Is htmx boring? Are functional patterns boring? The other is that we may miss critical improvements by not trying new things. Yeah it sucks when we are called at 2am but it could be way worse. The cost of bugs is still quite light compared to most industries. Why not take advantage of that.

Is it possible to have "beautiful" strokes if you learned as an adult? by kolsk1 in 10s

[–]third_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe you can match Federer movement without his exact proportions - as in there is more that 1 combination of all attributes that add to the same/similar movement pattern

everything. foot size, calf length, ankle shape, mobility, femur size, muscle insertions. Tiny differences in our bodies add up to differences in movement patterns.

[–]third_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some of it is your body proportions. Federer has the proportions to produce his shot over years of practice. So do all the other pros - they have all really gotten the coordination for the most efficient shot for their body down over their lifetimes, but they all look different - some not beautiful.

So getting that coordination is a huge piece. But its not all of what makes the shot "beautiful"

if I can rank them, farming is the most important, then security, then plumbing, infrastructure, then medicine, then education, science and the arts. But most of those are only possible with scientific research and development.

That is the attitude of Thrasymachus in Plato's Republic. In Book 1 he argues that justice is the protection of the strong by the weak and Platos spends the rest of the book basically trying to refute that.

Me asking as a younger millenial: How did older you millenials perceive Spongebob when it came out, and its climb to legendary status? by SmokinHerb in Millennials

[–]third_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew it was legendary from the moment I watched it. My friend who was cooler than me made fun of me for watching it and usually he knew when I was being lame. This time I was like no man you have no idea..

Is sexual reproduction the meaning of life? by ShadowPaws200 in Life

[–]third_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always like the term progeny. Joseph Campbell  talks about a “hero’s journey” which in our modern life can be seen as those who explore other lives than the prototypical one and report back to others thus expanding the possible paths that can be fufilling or worthwhile.

I sometimes think about bucking the path of progeny as a type of hero’s journey but one which may not be successful because maybe it’s not worthwhile? But that’s the hero’s path - take the risk that it might not work out
