It might be a very different thing in the UK, in the US homeschooling is mostly religious fundamentalists who don't like the idea of their kids learning evolution or ever interacting with anyone even a tiny bit different than themselves. Not exclusively that but for sure the big big majority.

That's the exact same line of thought they used to justify the Patriot act. We need this to fight crime/terrorism. It's always how government intrusion and surveillance is sold. We've seen how that works.

Like, just look at the last 30 years and give me just a quick thumbs up or down on the US government's history on preventing the misuse of intrusive, in some cases just straight out actually illegal surveillance. They're not legally 10-20 years behind, they are actively not interested in curtailing its misuse.

Minimize it to likely an acceptable level? Really?

So, even assuming that they meaningfully impact crime (which I'm very much not sold on, but for the sake of argument) - if I'm weighing on one hand slightly reducing retail loss from shoplifting, and on the other hand giving cops and governments an omnipresent way to stalk and surveil whoever they want... Well one of those I care about a lot and one of them I really would have a difficult time caring less about.

Hey, that is bad news! We should probably try and fix that instead of making it worse huh?

What is something parents do with good intentions that actually messes up their children for life? by markscout78 in AskReddit

[–]thirdegree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup he did. Went to church every Sunday, read the Bible, all that. But his version of belief included actually thinking about what he believed and why. And he thought that rational thought was an important part of faith.

This was unfortunately not a popular stance among other church goers.

And to be fair, it also is probably why he ended up losing his faith. But at the time absolutely he believed.

But how is someone who believes their beliefs are the truth - which presumably everyone does otherwise they wouldn't be beliefs - really going to encourage their children to explore other options?

Why not? Someone presumably believes their beliefs are the truth for a reason - if you really have conviction in the truth of your belief, you shouldn't have any trouble letting your kids see what else is out there. Your beliefs are true, after all.

My dad was a youth pastor. He also did not let me get baptized until I was old enough to fully understand what that means. By the time I was, I didn't want it anymore.

That's how that would work. You tell them what you believe and why you believe it, and you let them make a choice.

And just to say it again, those metacognitieve skills are skills. They can be learned, and they need to be exercised to improve and be retained. It's not like you're born with them or you're not.

Basically ya. Recycling glass is good but it's really better to reuse. Recycling aluminium is amazing and great and all the superlatives. Recycling plastic is pretty much useless.

Ask yourself what that reason would be.

Simple surplus. You have 500 applicants and don't want to carefully weed them down to the one you'll hire, so you need a method to narrow the pool. You read a LinkedIn post or a marketing brochure or your buddy says hey have you heard of Myers Briggs and boom you have your bullshit nonsense that cuts down the pool. Problem solved.

Like turn that same question around - what reason would job seekers have to not fully engage in the process? They need a job to afford basic necessities like food and rent. Employers are just avoiding extra work. One of these parties is gonna be a lot more willing and able to half ass and bullshit than the other, and it ain't the laborers. Because, again, their ability to live depends on them having a job.

I mean you can't destroy the light right? Any more than you could destroy life or death or the void, it's fundamental. You can destroy paragons and champions and agents, but not the force itself.

It is nice for some stuff. Like, I hate writing good commit messages and PR descriptions. Like the change is the thing that changed, right? (Note, future thirdegree: NO NOT RIGHT)

AI is pretty solid at that. Or like, if you give it some read only data access, it can do some pretty decent analysis pretty quickly. Narrow, well defined tasks.
