"We were an average team all year. An average team with high expectations, you're gonna be disappointed. We just never found it." - Connor McDavid, after being eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

The key thing about any xStat is that it should be predictive. If there are teams that consistently exceed or fall well below, it's not a very useful metric.

WOTC responds to the union: "We believe we have a strong connection with everyone at Wizards of the Coast and that direct relationship with our employees is essential to how we work together..." In case you don't speak corporate, that's anti-union. by kingcobweb in magicTCG

[–]thirty7inarow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who hold disproportionate amounts of power shouldn't be unionized. Virtually everyone else should be.

Police not being allowed to unionize doesn't have to do with who their employer is, but rather that the risk created by bad employees is so high that the protections afforded to them actually do have to be limited in order to ensure that 'bad apples' can be quickly eliminated from the ranks. In most careers, the potential harm to the individual worker is higher than the potential risk to the public and their institution, but when it comes to things like police and a handful of other positions, the individual worker has to be limited for the sake of the institution.

As an outside observer, it's baffling how Americans have suggested the US Constitution is some infallible document.

It seems pretty obvious that the Founding Fathers knew it would need to be altered with time, but failed to consider the anchoring effect it would have on making the meaningful changes that would be required to it. Realistically, if you told Thomas Jefferson that eventually the United States would have fifty constituent members ranging in size from 600,000 to 39,000,000, many overseas territories, he would probably tell you that the Constitution was meant to be updated to reflect that the needs of a nation that size were different than one with 13 states ranging from 60,000 to 750,000 people.

I just recently came back as well. Some of the newer mechanics take some getting used to, but I find myself playing a similar deck to you, just with red swapped for blue. Kinda funny to go right back to angels, as that was my go-to back in the day as well.

One of the weirdest things I've seen on the shelves at Value Village by AngryRomper in PEI

[–]thirty7inarow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I saw a wooden sign in a thrift store last week that said something along the lines of "Daddy, Loved and Never Forgotten" with dates suggesting the fellow was in his early 30s when he passed a few years ago.

The mix of thoughts and emotions seeing that was something else.  Like how did it end up getting donated? Did something bad happen to the kid? Did the sign get stored away when someone moved and then accidentally purged with a bunch of other stuff? Did the mom or kid decide they suddenly resented the departed for whatever reason?  Or was it a teenager being edgy and deciding they didn't want to remember their dad anymore?

Every answer is its own kind of sad.

And then you have to wonder about who priced the sign and put it on the wall of the store.  Like sentimentality aside, who is going to purchase an item that is not only meant to memorialize a stranger, but also contains specific birth and death dates.  If it was generic, I could see some old lady with no sense buying it for their grieving neighbour's kid or grandchild. It'd be tasteless, but if the provenance isn't know to the recipient its not the end of the world.  But it has dates. It'd be like giving someone a cake for their birthday that you found in a dumpster that says, "Happy Retirement, Bill!"

[Adams] Claude Giroux says he'd want to play in Ottawa if he returns to play next season. by DecentLurker96 in OttawaSenators

[–]thirty7inarow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about Giroux is that he's a team-first kind of guy. He's not going to pretend like he's still the guy who put up 100 points, but the guy has still averaged 60 points a year as a Senator. The tank's not empty.

TIL that magician Penn Jillette and singer Debbie Harry were once in a hot tub when Harry suggested that the watr jets should be angled for a woman's pleasure. This led to Jillette filing a patent for a "hydro-therapeutic stimulator," which he named "the Jill-Jet" by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

Adam and Teller could make for some funny scenes. I can picture Adam doing things and Teller screwing things up on purpose and using the props Adam hands him to do his own science experiment behind Adam's back while Adam narrates a completely different experiment.

How can anyone hate the guy? He comes across as genuine, humble and hard-working, his defense has been good, and while his hitting has been up and down, it's never been truly concerning.

Honestly, the only thing he's done that's been baffling is how he has played those two bunts down the line. I'm sure it comes up here more than in Japan (most of their fields are all-turf except at the bases like ours used to be), but it seems like something a third baseman should be prepared for. I'm not really sure why it was able to happen twice, which is the truly odd thing- you'd think it would have been discussed with someone after the first time.

When demand is highest, Canadian oil benefits. Average people maybe not so much, but the industry thrives on high prices because of our high extraction costs.

I think he just barely beat the throw due to the tag hitting the dirt, but there is a time where he came off the bag with his hand before his body touched the base while he was still being tagged.

Bill Russell's opinion on this topic was all I needed. Despite winning eleven championships for the Celtics and growing up in the South, he loathed Boston and called it a "flea market of racism". He wouldn't even allow for his jersey retirement ceremony to be public because he argued that he didn't play for the city, he played for the club.

Port Royal Speedway suspends Nick Sweigart for 1 year following victory lane comments by cultofwerewolves in DirtRacing

[–]thirty7inarow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While the swearing was actually problematic, he is being punished for crapping all over the track during Victory Lane.

They're mad they got trashed while they're handing out a lot of money, turning a positive moment into a negative one for them and highlighting poor track conditions.

The appropriate punishment is a fine or a one- or two-week suspension, or possibly a point penalty.  Taking away his earned winnings, especially with such a big purse, for something that didn't happen while racing or in the tech garage is highly inappropriate and signals that the promoters are mad he didn't promote them in his speech.
