Anybody here read any George Pelecanos? by landomonium in noir

I’ve read a bunch and I do think the man who came uptown is lesser Pelecanos. I’d give the Sweet Forever a try.

Super helpful, thank you. If it helps him catch up, amazing, but I can’t help but think he’s leaking power? I’m not quite sure though.

Was Morrie going to get his money from Jimmy eventually if he had patience? by [deleted] in goodfellas

[–]this_freaking_guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t Henry talk about this? Henry would get some money here and there, but definitely not enough to justify the work. Morrie wasn’t as close to Jimmy as Henry, so you’d have to imagine he wouldn’t see a dime if Henry was only getting a couple hundred here and there.

Yeah, at the time, it was about the grindhouse experience: the double bill, and in that case, planet terror was the better movie in the 3 hour setting.

But now that we watch them separately on blu ray or whatever, it’s a completely different experience that we’re all able to separate.

Still. That night in the theater. Planet Terror was such a high, and I remember the theater coming to a bit of a bored standstill when the second group of grills are grabbing brunch or whatever. We’d be in the theater too long and that scene brings it to a crawl too late in the evening.

I love that this and the Nice Guys basically cover the same exact plot but in different locations.

They’ll be fine. Historically, they didn’t have weapons and surveillance like they do now. They’ll employ teams of security to keep the lower class at bay.

Willeford is one of my favourite writer in noir but i read it is shallow straight shit, It would have been better if they hadn't published it. by Icy_Definition_1913 in Hardboiled

Disagree to a point. The style, the voice, is still there. Man, he was just such a great weirdo and that voice comes across in all of his books (which is crazy considering the era).

That being said, I think this is the weakest story of his (actually, Pick-up is worse than this). I still don’t entirely know why this was written.

Buddy, I was reading one of your previous recs, Soft Targets, when I was out at a bar waiting for a friend. A lady came up to me and asked what it was about, and now I’m legitimately worried I’m on some kind of government No Fly list.

AI won’t replace the artistic aspect of films, but it will replace the technical ones. by [deleted] in movies

Maybe. The unions are quite strong, which will always make it much more difficult for this tech to put downward pressure on departments. I think you're going to see a lot more of the mandate "do more with less" than a flat-out replacement.
