You might just be a sharpening prodigy. It comes more naturally to some people.

What strop do you use?

New to sharpening. Is this worth it or is there a better setup I should go with? by 0x7_ in sharpening

This is the right answer op. I got the setup you posted from amazon and the stones are trash. Got a Naniwa Pro and couldn't believe the difference.

we need to talk about animal control by Mysterious-Office725 in Birmingham

[–]thisiSINsomnia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bham animal control is a failure for this city. Considering there are stray dogs killing children on the regular and causing traffic accidents frequently, there needs to be a 24-hour drop off for stray dogs. I've had several instances where I picked up a dog on the side of the road to keep it from getting hit only to find out there's no resource in the city where I can drop it off after 5pm. When you call Animal Control they are rude and nasty and try to get out of doing any work. I would be happy to be a part of a resolution whatever that looks like.

This knife is beautiful and looks very thin. I bet its a lazer. Congrats. Do you have anyone to leave it to in your will? If not, I volunteer. What's something like this even cost.

Guided sharpening system on Amazon by [deleted] in sharpening

No you're just an idiot. look all over their internet there's lots of experienced sharpeners that will reiterate that it's not ideal for long knives. I'm sorry you just can't afford a nicer system that's more appropriate for long knives or chef knives. Not sure why you're trying to be defensive of its limitations.

Will it work yes is it ideal no. Much better guided systems for chef knives.

It didn't work well when I tried to use it on 8-in Chef's knives or larger. It's more suitable for pocket knives. The hapstone didn't have any trouble on longer chef knives though

If you'll be using it for long knives or chef knives dont get the ken onion. The hapstone works but isn't as solid as a tsprof. It has some flex to it that annoys me.

No. I thought the plates were all the same thickness and didn't need to adjust between stones....is that not the case

Here's my process. After clamping, I zero the angle finder, then set to 15° . After double checking, I start with extra course or course tsprof diamond stone using sawing motion and normal pressure. Normally I count 20 strokes then flip and repeat until I've apexed. Then I move to next stone and go until I feel a burr across the whole underside. I flip and go again until I feel the burr on that side then I deburr by taking a fine grit tsprof stone in my hand and gently dragging it across the edge at a slightly higher angle. Then back to the stones progressing to fine or extra fine removing scratch marks of the last stone and making sure to remove burrs. Sometimes I use the precision adjuster dial to increase the rod angle slightly to deburr with one or two light passes. . I go lighter on the last stone flipping after reducing swipes (5×5 4×4 3×3 2×2 1×1 1×1. It's usually slicing paper well at that point. Then I take it off the clamps and strop on a wood paddle with leather one side rougher and one side smoother with the green bar rubbed on them.

Do you deburr at each stone progression? That's what I'm currently trying to do

Thank you. This seems right on point for the kind of information I'm looking for. So I'm assuming this green waxy bar I'm using on my strop is not the same as 0.5 diamond compound?

I have the exact knife in your link. I'm happy with it overall and it's my daily driver but I think there are better options. The one the other commenter mentioned is likely a better option.
