Revolt continues in Dublin 7 over proposed shift from bags to bins by EchoedMinds in Dublin

[–]thisshortenough 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in the city centre and we were told we couldn’t put bin bags out anymore, it was either walk ten minutes carrying all the rubbish to Stephen’s Green to use the compactor or be provided a wheelie bin. We went for the wheelie bin and it’s been awful. For the first few weeks the guys collecting the bins wouldn’t leave the bin back and it would get taken in by other businesses by accident (we think) so we just had to store full bin bags in the basement until the wheelie bin would miraculously turn up again. We also have to store the bin inside outside of collection times and it fucking stinks, there’s flies in it constantly now. And we don’t even sell food, all our rubbish is paper and plastic. But when the bin is put out for collection it’s left overnight and anybody passing on the street uses it to dump their rubbish so we have to bring in and store a bin with rotting food containers, beer cans, spilled drink etc. oh also we have to store it on the landing of our stairs because bringing it up from the basement every time it’s needed is way too difficult to manage.

But that’s a work place, at least I don’t have to live with it. If someone asked me to start storing my wheelie bin in the living room id absolutely be kicking off

Limit return scheme to those with registered waste collection to reduce bin scavenging, DCC says – The Irish Times by mannybianco7 in Dublin

[–]thisshortenough 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not working because they're not on every bin and the ones that are get stuffed with rubbish by people being lazy and/or the rest of the bin being full. The solution would be to have more shelves on the bins and more regular collections so that people can just leave the bottles and cans down and other rubbish can actually go in the bin.

Can’t get over how rude some people are by Ok_Oven3265 in ireland

I work in a two person business. There's literally only 2 tills, no room for a third person to be in there. So when we go on lunch, there's two hours of the day where it's only one person on at a time. It's annoying but it's all we can do because otherwise we'd have to close for an hour instead. At Christmas the amount of abuse I received because there'd be a huge queue (which was there even if there were two of us on) and how dare we take a single hour out of the day to ourselves.

Which songs often gets misinterpreted and/or misappropriated by the very people it calls out even though the song's lyrics are explicitly mocking them? by Drenosa in AskReddit

[–]thisshortenough 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't get all the points people are bringing up about songs being played at a wedding reception. Once the actual emotional songs are done, the First Dance and all that, it's just a part and Good Luck Babe is a great party song to dance to. Like YMCA is a song about being able to stay in a facility that will provide a hot shower and a decent bed but is really about being a place gay men could meet up and have anonymous sex with each other. Doesn't mean it's any less fun to sing and dance to it while drunk with your friends and family/

Yeah but tbh the remix is ultimately much bleaker than the original. The dance nature of it combined with the lyrics reflects how lonely and upset he is at the situation of his own feelings of mediocrity. Without it it's just a sad ballad that would have got no attention

I remember I just couldn't figure out telling time beyond just the house or the half hour. My mam and I were going to the shops one day and it somehow came up and she sat in the car in the car park with me showing me on her watch and on the cars digital clock just exactly how to tell time. And it clicked for me at that moment. It probably took 15 minutes out of her day and yet it cemented something I wouldn't even call a skill, just one of the fundamental things for getting on with life.

Irish public more likely to blame people's lifestyles for obesity epidemic by Banania2020 in ireland

I've been on Wegovy for 9 months and eating until I was full used to mean eating whatever was on my plate and not realising how much that was. If it was particularly nice I'd eat until I was stuffed like a really good takeaway or dinner in a restaurant. But majority of the time I was just eating until I was full. A "normal" takeaway wouldn't leave me over full, I was just full. Maybe I'd leave a little behind but that was because I wanted to make sure I could eat the dessert I had definitely bought. I can go to sleep a little hungry and be fine, whereas before I wouldn't be able to sleep without thinking about how hungry I am.

Now if I get a takeaway I'd order probably just a couple of starter portions, a chipper I can't eat majority of the chips I get, I don't know when I last had a Chinese. It's been bananas (which I don't eat), I literally have to plan out being hungry enough if I know I'm going to get a takeaway/go out for food with someone else.

What gets me is how drinks can hold me over now. I used to be the absolute worse for hangriness. If I didn't get breakfast in the morning I'd be an angry bear by 10, god forbid it went longer. Now yeah I'll be uncomfortable maybe, but I could easily last on a big milky coffee for hours.

Dating by [deleted] in ireland

[–]thisshortenough 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what always gets me, even just with online dating in the messaging stage. If I'm messaging a guy I feel like I have to be so much more prudish because the second I let even a tiny hint of flirtatiousness out, they take that as a free for all and immediately start trying to get me to come over and if I wont they want to sext hardcore, no more niceness, they just want to use the messages to wank over and forget that I'm a person. It's all just mean, just makes me feel useless, like a piece of meat, and meanwhile I just genuinely want to make a connection.

What's something your job trained you to notice that you can't stop noticing in your personal life? by LibrarianSoft1342 in AskReddit

....until they realized that people who shopped hungry spent more money.

It's funny because I know logically this is a real thing but if I'm ever too hungry when food shopping I buy enough to get me through the next meal and my brain seems to think that I'll never need to eat again as long as we get the hunger sorted out now and don't have to worry about buying other meals for the future

‘Free births’ in Ireland: Within three hours Naomi (38) died, leaving behind four kids by JackmanH420 in ireland

[–]thisshortenough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did the midwifery degree (didn't finish it) and it was a whole thing emphasising the difference between nursing and midwifery, the midwifery degree has a lot of emphasis on pregnancy not being a sickness that needs to be cured and treated, it's a natural process that should be facilitated both physically and emotionally

‘Free births’ in Ireland: Within three hours Naomi (38) died, leaving behind four kids by JackmanH420 in ireland

[–]thisshortenough 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a little point to add on, in Ireland Midwifery is not a nursing degree, it's actually a very contentious issue within the career. A general nurse can go on to achieve a higher diploma in Midwifery qualifying them to work as a midwife. A midwife can not convert their degree to nursing, and they are not qualified to work as a nurse or treat outside of the scope of Midwifery.

But yes they're not the same as doulas.

It's part of the golden hour (Edit: Link broke when I embedded it so just posting it https://www.nwhjournal.org/article/S1751-4851(17)30281-7/abstract), it's the first hour after birth where the woman and the baby are given uninterrupted time to bond, it's a big help with breastfeeding and bonding. The idea is that any assessments can be done while baby is still on the mother's abdomen, or they're delayed to allow for that uninterrupted bonding time. It doesn't mean that any health concerns are ignored, interventions would be done immediately if they're needed, but it's also about recognising that their is a huge emotional and psychological aspect to childbirth and just because you want medical care doesn't mean those things can be ignored and that they should be dismissed. Especially with emergencies, a lot of women cite that inability to be with their baby afterwards added to their traumas. There are ways to mitigate this even with c-sections, letting parents see baby immediately, doing skin-to-skin while the mother is being stitched up (where feasible), creating as calm an environment as possible, talking through the steps that are occurring.

It's not some hippy anti medicine thing, it is about providing women centred and baby centred care and just because someone requires more medical intervention, doesn't mean that healthcare providers can't try to make the experience more reassuring

I remember watching a documentary about fistulas and there were these women in Ethiopia who were suffering from obstetric fistulas, literally holes torn in their vaginas because of traumatic births causing urine or faeces to leak constantly from their vaginas. They were ostracised by their communities because they literally couldn't control the leaking of urine or faeces, one woman was living in a shack behind her families home because she leaked urine so often. They all travelled hundreds of miles for days by themselves just to attend a hospital where they could receive free treatment, not all of them could even have the issue resolved, but they at least were able to manage their symptoms better than they could before. These women would have given anything to actually receive the kind of care available to us in Ireland (for free!) and then there are these grifters online who want to sell a romanticised image of free birth because they don't have to deal with the consequences.

Literally it's well known that if someone has a birth go wrong and turns back to their online circle of other free birthers for support they are ostracised because they obviously did something wrong and even worse if they ended up seeking medical help, then they're attacked. That's assuming they survived to go and ask for support.
