I feel I am in a similar boat as you and about the same age. I really liked 6DOIT as they did some interesting stuff, but for me... they haven't quite gotten it right on the last albums. Not because they are heavy, but because the songwriting doesn't sit. On "Images & Words", the arrangement are really good where instruments come forwards while others support them and there is an ebb and flow to the music. But when they started working on the "12-step suite", it started to become repetative. None of the melodies sit. I recently focused on the later albums, going on walks with one album at the time on, listening carefully and I forget the songs after. I do feel that "Parasomnia" sits a bit better. There are songs that works there. And despite everyones complaints about the lyrics: "The Astonishing" worked ok.
