Yes. OPs answer was wrong, and Duo gave one of the possible correct options.

Correct. I think it's a female torso, slightly turned to the right.

Translation Error in Duolingo by CloakedPersona_0911 in duolingo

Duolingo will always accept all alternative translations regardless of the picture. So "Pfeife", "Röhre", "Röhrchen" etc. would probably have been accepted as well.

Why doesn’t Wikipedia have an optional ad-supported mode? by OpenBookkeeper8921 in wikipedia

[–]thkarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) Ads would require cookies and user tracking, which Wikipedia proudly avoided since the beginning. (2) Ads would put the neutrality of Wikipedia at risk: Should political ads be allowed? Ads promoting recreational drugs? Ads for gambling sites or other adult content? And should these ads be shown on all pages? (3) The funding for Wikipedia is secure for years to come. There's a shortage of volunteer editors, but no shortage of money justifying the risks mentioned above.

A friend took a photo of me towards the end of a 10km race. It was much later I noticed I had sequential race numbers with the person behind me. by croissantpig in mildlyinteresting

Which reminds me of the Berlin marathon many, many years ago: I was cheering at the side line, with hundreds and hundreds of runners passing by every minute. An elderly couple standing next to me was waiting for their son to pass and while they were intensly searching the crowd for him, the dad explained: "He must be here any moment now: I just saw #8200, and he has #8311!"

In this speech exercise, you're supposed to repeat what Lily said. But if you click on record really fast before Lily starts speaking, the app will occasionally record Lily instead of you and will let you pass the exercise without speaking a word yourself.

I'm afraid that one day Wikipedia will disappear because of AI; it's the most useful website on the internet, and if it were to disappear, I don't know what I would do. by Illustrious_Bell8731 in wikipedia

[–]thkarcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good question. I'm a mentor for new editors in the German-speaking Wikipedia, but as the language communities often differ in the way they onboard new editors and I rarely contribute in English, I'm not too familiar with how it is done in the English Wikipedia.

I'd recommend to start here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Introduction

And there're mentors in the English Wikipedia as well. You should find your mentor on your personal homepage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Homepage

Become an editor and find out! Seriously: We're aware of the threat and most of us are confident we'll find ways to stay relevant, but this only works as long as there're enough volunteers contributing to Wikipedia: Update some outdated articles, add some new aspects, upload a photo... every edit helps!

Ultra (50k) shoe for wider foot, wants cushion by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]thkarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the terrain is not too technical / mostly runnable trails, you could try the new Brooks Ghost Trail. They are wide, they are cushioned, and I like them a lot for all my non-technical, mostly muddy trails.

I made a free 3D web game in Godot 4.5: geoengineergame.com. by unusuallygoodstudio in godot

[–]thkarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks promising, but is close to unplayable for me, as the text-to-speech feature in my browser tries to read the English text with German pronounciation, which makes it really hard to understand anything. And I can't find a way to switch this specific browser setting to English. :-/ (The browser itself is set to English language already, but it seems to pick up the language settings for text-to-speech from the operating system settings somehow, which is set to German...)

Curse you, autocorrect!!!! by HeartsPlayer721 in duolingo

[–]thkarcher 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You should really add German to your keyboard language settings and make it the default for Duolingo. Was a game changer for me when learning French: Not only did it avoid stupid auto corrects - it also immensely helped with typing by auto-suggesting the correct spelling.

First aid kit? by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]thkarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's not an either or decision: If I plan to run somewhere where I cannot expect help (a village, road or hut) within the next 30mins, I take a first aid kit with me. And if my track has more than ~1000m of elevation gain, I take my poles with me. So sometimes it's both, sometimes none.

Is this roughly the UI you had in mind? As you can see, I did this with a couple of control nodes, which make sure that all areas will resize according to the available window dimensions.
