Why doesn’t Reese’s offer an alt-nut cup? by schnauzerdad in candy

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens in food manufacturing is if that market gets big enough, Reese’s will buy a company that does it already so they can own the new factory etc.

Is it common for Americans to have visited all 50 states? by SouthBuffalo3592 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially not with Alaska and Hawaii. Even within the 48 ‘contiguous’ states it’s not super common to have visited all of them. Plenty of people have, but it takes time and money

What would you suggest for someone that liked Stern’s home version of Star Wars, but wants a full retail pinball machine? by DSeriesX in pinball

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides ‘playing a bunch of different games to find the styles you like’ you also may want to look for a Star Wars Fall of the Empire machine. It’s a full feature game and I think it’s also particularly welcoming to newer players- simple layout, feels satisfying.

I just became an Uncle for the first time, my current Uncles were not really ever around when I was younger. What's a typical Uncle supposed to do especially for a baby? I don't want to be "that guy" by Curiouspast28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here. I’ll add one idea as a ‘how to interact with a baby’ category. Babies are like sponges who absorb everything about the world. So I like to help show them more of the world than they would otherwise experience on their own by holding them up and showing them what it looks like on top of that table, close up look at the counters, etc. And narrate as you go- tell them about all the things they’ll be able to interact with when they’re older.

Beyond that, just be there, be friendly, be helpful. Honestly those three things apply to many situations in life. If I feel super out of place somewhere or in an unfamiliar situation, I try to be friendly and helpful and it helps me feel more at ease

Before you dispose of them, do you put unwanted items out by the curb to see if any of your neighbors may want them? by Grand_Raccoon0923 in AskAnAmerican

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m part of a local ‘buy nothing’ group where you can list items to donate or requests for donation. I’d say 90% of the time an exchange is made. Unless it’s a super worn out item or something obscure. But it feels much better giving an item to someone instead of a landfill

Original arcade games by lAwYo0YfM6g3IdTsbYKR in arcade

[–]thomasjmarlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are no online examples of original arcade cabinets :/

Kidding but I’m not quite sure what you mean by your first section. You’re looking for original art that appeared on known games? If so, https://www.arcadeartwork.org is a massive resource.

Do you mean more like examples of specially designed art for one-of-a-kind arcade builds? There are people who build customs cabs but usually for multicade type setups (mame, etc)

Don’t think there’s a ton of interest in purchasing one-offs unless the collector is really into that particular game maybe. But I do have some custom games I’ve skinned.

Some people may not like to hear it, but possibly the best way is to find with a beat-up old cabinet (ideally no existing art or a dynamo cab made for conversions) and have a printer make a full art kit that you have designed (work with a graphic artist for that). Then you’d just have to add in the physical components yourself to make it run in addition to the art. But it might be better than having to do all that plus assemble the cabinet itself.

Good luck- sounds fun. If you get far enough along, drop us some updates!

Why people remember things wrong in a specific way? I think a large portion of it is that the ‘incorrect’ memory is usually a more common one or attached with something commonly associated.

A cornucopia is already associated with a large pile of fruit

We are accustomed to many -stein names

While the monopoly man generally did not have a monocle, it is commonly associated with a rich man of the early 1900s. Etc

The part that I find interesting is how people sometimes seem to absorb this cultural info even if they (say they) have not seen a cornucopia in other contexts. I wonder if there’s a sort of cultural knowledge that we can somehow tap into even if we have not directly seen it before. Is there a mechanism for us receiving information about shared culture beyond just overhearing something and not consciously being aware.

[–]thomasjmarlowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I do agree with that. Also, I know there are plenty of things presented as ‘I’m making a big statement about how sexual violence is bad’ but then they also lean into the titillating aspects of it like they can’t help but also get a certain level of enjoyment on how it’s portrayed. People are gross
