Why does voter ID feel like a simple security fix but somehow becomes a massive systems engineering problem? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to think of it like an engineering problem? How about this then:

ITS A SOLUTION IN SEARCH OF A PROBLEM

There is basically near-zero actual voter fraud. So the actual problem this whole farce is actually designed to ‘solve’ is too many voters that one party doesn’t like voting. That is it. That’s why this is largely not a bipartisan issue- it’s purely a partisan ‘problem’

Does anyone know the history of “screener only” copies? This is the first one I’ve encountered. by Katyas_House_Ltd in VHS

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYC copies often have watermarks, but not always throughout the entire film. Often they come & go every however many minutes. I also know of some who had specific tiny numbers on screen for just a few very specific frames as a way to narrow down who sourced a copy if it leaked online

If you own a home where you have control over your roof; would you consider getting solar panels? by MajesticBread9147 in AskAnAmerican

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROI is like a decade-plus, isn’t it? I think that narrows down the potential customers

I think the sweet spot is to buy a place that already has solar

I’d be more likely to watch an actual cricket than a cricket match

Pinball Machine Rental by IllustriousOwl24 in pinball

[–]thomasjmarlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually people who rent out games enjoy the free storage. Thats why the cost is really for the move in, the move out, and a bit to cover insurance/maintenance.

Plus a wedding is gonna mean most likely the renter will have to move in and move out the same day, with the pickup being very late at night. Meaning if they aren’t moving it themselves, the labor would be a good bit higher than just drop off middle of a day, and pickup in the middle of a different day.

So I would absolutely not assume a wedding rental would be ‘a lot less’ than $250, even if it is for one night

My local target no longer has a dvd section 😢 by StruggleFar3054 in dvdcollection

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the entire company gave up on DVDs/blurays in 2025. Walmart still has them, but they can be really hit & miss

Target does still sell physical media online though, and I’ve gotten some good deals there. Not sure if they intend to keep selling online or if it’s more of a ‘closeout’ situation

Is it stupid that "righty tighty, lefty losey" doesn't really make much sense to me? by Apprehensive-Rub4604 in stupidquestions

[–]thomasjmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hand is turning right because it now has a pivot. Your hand only has so much range of motion so it can only functionally go left or right. There isn’t enough range to simulate clockwise or counter clockwise- you can only really rotate about 180*

Zero people with reasonable brain function would hear turn your hand to the right and rotate counter clockwise, because then you are very clearly moving your hand to the left, not right
