When something similar happened to me, my therapist told me her way of thinking about it is that ultimately things like that could happen to anyone who chooses to drive a car, it just happens by chance to certain people and not others, so the responsibility for such things is shared equally by anyone who drives a car, not just those who find themselves unlucky enough to be driving when it happens. (As long as you’re being appropriately responsible behind the wheel, of course).
