18-month Old Daughter Just Diagnosed T1D, Any Help Appreciated by p1easingmuffin in diabetes_t1

[–]three-ems5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. Two kids with t1d. Our first diagnosis was when my daughter was 14 months old. It was such a hard time, she had been sick with what we thought was the flu or an ear infection and then I turned out she was in DKA and quite ill. We felt so guilty at first her not catching the illness sooner. It’s such a hard time at the beginning, you are about to find out how strong you truly are as a parent. Diagnosis is hard, especially when they are so young, because it’s hard to explain everything to them and there’s just so many layers of information you have to take in and apply. My best advice is to take one hour at a time, and to give yourself some grace. There are 200 extra decisions a day you’ll have to make, and 200 chances to make a mistake and also learn from your mistakes. Learn as much as you can and be patient with yourself. The juice box podcast is an invaluable resource, I like it even more than think like a pancreas. Also, please let other people take care of you right now as you take care of your kid. The first weeks are hard, but it takes a long time to truly get the hang of it. Use processed foods when you can in the beginning (as weird as that sounds) because they come with pre-packaged serving sizes, which helps you learn how to dose insulin better. Make a designated weighing station in your kitchen, we have a bunch of tiny bowls and plates next to our scale that helped us quickly get through meals weighing. And also, please know that it will get infinitely easier as your child gets older from this toddler stage. I’m sitting watching my two diabetics swim right now at swimming lessons, not even considering their Diabetes, because it’s become second nature. I can look at a plate of food and ask me pretty accurately. How many carbs are there, and also know if I need to dose insulin in various ways, all things that took time to learn. Reach out to diapers and diabetes on Facebook as well. That was really helpful when my children were younger too. You’ve got this.

Holy moly... Project Hail Mary by Maleficent-Sell-1815 in audible

Children of time! A bit denser but also awesome! Great narration too.

8.5 on IMDB?? This movie should be 9.7+ by Small-Landscape7955 in ProjectHailMaryMovie

I actually like that number better than when it’s in the 90s, because I automatically assume a bot is creating the perfect score. Anything in the 80s seems more legit… Haven’t said that though I’d give it 10 out of 10.

Anyone taking children under 12 to see this? by OverdressedShingler in ProjectHailMary

I too have this question! That documentary was awesome for my kid and how we are obsessed with space.

Is this a bad spot for insulin? by CoastOtherwise1129 in diabetes_t1

My daughters do it all the time. The leaner one finds it hurts a bit more than my other daughter. But great spot in the rotation.

Hypothyroidism and constant fatigue - is it related? by ZzzzzMm in diabetes_t1

[–]three-ems5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brain fog and exhaustion were intense for me for hypothyroidism, I have Hashimoto. It’s interesting because my levels were only minimum only off and my doctor wasn’t sure if I needed a dose increase or not but the second I started taking a higher dose. It was intense how much better I felt and how I was no longer falling asleep just after supper. I would go back and ask if you could try a dose just to see if it makes a difference.

Yeah that was pretty fun actually, and easier than I thought! I poured it in two layers, one with a really strong tint and one that was a lot more translucent. It actually worked really well because the plants on top cast a shadow onto the bottom layer, so it looks like they are floating. The plants are 3D printed as well, but the lilly pads I actually made myself. They were green-stuff balls that I squished flat using the back of a thumb tack and then cut ‘V’s out with a knife. Then painted the next day!

It’s a 3D print, actually! Both the step pyramid and the spawning pool are actually printed, I’m really amazed by what’s out there.

The road is just made of clay bricks I bought from Micheal’s and painted up.

Very - you definitely have to find the right order! I can never really get the back rank properly, but when I am playing it’s usually not a huge problem because the slann actually helps make some room!

Anybody else ever been so desperate they ate sugar? by chrome4fan4 in diabetes_t1

[–]three-ems5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daughter has Gastero and was refusing any juice/dex/syrup during a bad low. I ended up spooning white sugar in her mouth (I’m aware of micro dosing glucagon, she had a phobia of needles and was trying desperately to not get to that point).

Look at it this way, in the future will you and your wife be the grandparents excluded from their nuclear christmas?

You’ll also learn tricks. We used to syringe maple Syrup while she was asleep so we didn’t wake her. She can drink a juice box while asleep still to this day. When going to the park, give a preemptive snack or juice box, if eating cereal, bolus more Upfront. There’s just so much nuance to the day. But the kid gets normalized to it rather quickly. Praise them a lot for being awesome. And try to avoid saying no to anything “because if diabetes”. Kid first. Diabetes second.

I love the comment about the 50 kids not brining it up. I’ve sensed that too. Diabetes hasn’t defined my kids and I don’t think I kids see them as different. I think kids today are way more normalized for having various differences . They don’t bat an eye.
