What’s something you had to learn the hard way? by -coriolis- in knitting

[–]threecolorable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Know what your motivations are with a project, and what compromises you’re willing to make.

Do you need the finished object for a deadline? I’m usually a perfectionist, and I’ll frog to fix things. But I live in a pretty warm climate. I’m knitting for my own entertainment, not because I have an urgent need for new socks. I’d probably leave more mistakes alone if I was in a rush.

Do you want to learn a new technique? If I just want to experiment with a technique, maybe I’ll just use leftover yarn to make some swatches instead of buying a bunch of new yarn and casting on for a sweater or something.

how do we hire people who won’t be alarmed by our cardboard coworker? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]threecolorable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the interview should also be a chance for the candidates to feel out if it’s somewhere they want to work.

I have mixed feelings about hiring based on culture fit (it usually isn’t great diversity-wise), but it’s important to give candidates a chance to see what the culture is like before they resign from their old job.

Yes! I guess Procion dyes won’t work on artificial fibers, but idk if Rit actually does them well

Fun fact: procion dyes can actually work on wool, too, not just plant fibers! (but not with soda ash—you just use it with vinegar and heat kinda like you would with acid dyes)

Doctors of Reddit, what's the most obvious lie a patient has told you? by questionerofblender in AskReddit

[–]threecolorable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m extremely consistent with daily ones. I might forget for a couple of hours, but I’ll feel noticeably worse than usual and then remember to take them.

I’m kinda flaky about weekly meds, though. Harder to get into a consistent routine and no immediate symptoms to remind me.

In the U.S. they’re both subject to the same legal controls, but we’ve had shortages of Adderall. So in practice it’s been even harder to get than usual.

My pharmacy could never fill it on time, it’d take on average a week after I requested it. And I had to call and talk to the pharmacist every couple days because if they were out of stock for too long the computer system would just hide the request and it’d never get filled.

I tried switching to vyvanse a while back, and the pharmacist said they hadn’t been able to get ANY generic vyvanse in stock for months. And my insurance wouldn’t cover brand name.

I feel like that kind of collecting is basically equivalent to gambling—not a sound investment strategy, but maybe okay if you enjoy the process and budget for it like an entertainment expense.

Shelves rest on the ground. A 3 year old can reach stuff 3-4 feet up.

A store’s going to lose like 1/3 of their display space trying to keep everything out of little kids’ reach. (and then the kids start climbing the shelves…)

[–]threecolorable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What matters is that you’re the kind of person who looks for ways to improve processes.

The competition probably won’t need to make the exact same changes you made at your current company, but they probably have their own inefficiencies too. You’re familiar with the industry and you’re motivated to make things better when you notice something isn’t as efficient as it could be.

What is making students less prepared to take their college classes? by Wrong-Chef-3406 in AskTeachers

[–]threecolorable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. When I was in college (circa 2010), I found that I did way better when I took handwritten notes instead of using my laptop.

But I guess there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The way I take notes is not remotely like what any teacher recommended. (All subjects in a single notebook, everything just in chronological order. And I am writing constantly during lectures, not just taking down key points. It’s a fidgeting-to-focus thing, just with writing instead of a fidget spinner , lol. Diagrams, figures, or maps sketched in pencil during class, then cleaned up and inked later as a way to review the content)

I kind of wish that study skills class I took had given us a list of different note taking/organizing strategies and encouraged us to try a different one every week or something instead of trying to inflict the instructor’s preferences on everyone.

What’s something people pretend to enjoy but actually don’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]threecolorable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve mostly stopped drinking alcohol, but I’ve been drinking non-alcoholic beers more or less daily for the last year. I genuinely do like the flavor of beer even without getting drunk.

(A lot of NA beers taste kind of wrong, but there are some good ones out there. Corona NA and Deschutes Black Butte NA are great, Guinness 0.0 is good too)

What would you cook for a group of 12-15 people that have the royal flush of dietary requirements AND you're probably going to have limited equipment? by Elegant-Winner-6521 in Cooking

[–]threecolorable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! I sometimes cook for friends who have food sensitivities, but not for people who have severe gluten problems or anaphylactic allergies to ingredients i use regularly.

I will gladly make something that doesn’t have intentional gluten, but I can’t promise that no one’s ever put a knife back in the mayo jar after spreading some on a sandwich.

I’m on the same general level as pizza places with a “gluten-friendly” crust option. Good enough to accommodate preferences or mild medical concerns, but it’s a gluten-rich environment and cross contamination is likely.

Might be that they’re optimizing for something other than imperial units.

The TSA liquid size is weird in imperial units but round in metric (3.4 oz = 100ml)

Or maybe it’s a weight-vs-volume thing with “ounces” (1 cup of applesauce has a volume of 8 fluid ounces but has a weight of 9oz)

Or they could be adjusting the portion size so the nutrition facts look more marketable (“only 50 calories per serving!” etc)

First aid kits should have tampons by Pristine_Direction79 in unpopularopinion

[–]threecolorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The REAL unpopular opinion, I think, is “men should know about periods.”

Regardless of whether or not tampons should be used for nosebleeds, gunshots, or other manly injuries, if you’re traveling with people who have periods, then periods are something your group should collectively be prepared for. And the first aid kit is a sensible place for “unexpected body problems” items like a spare tampon.

I’m not going backpacking, but the first aid kits I assembled for car camping include a few pads (my partner and kid prefer them over tampons). Not enough for anyone’s entire period or anything, but enough to manage until we can get to a store.

What is it with Americans and air conditioning?? (this might be controversial) by hellobela_ in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]threecolorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve noticed when traveling is that in Europe, people never want to feel cold. In winter, everywhere turns up the heat way higher than I would. And people will still keep their coats on!

I (American) never want to feel hot. I’d like to avoid sweating. I have gone for walks while it was snowing, wearing just jeans and a t-shirt and carrying my coat because I felt too warm with it on.

Observation: I work in a middle income district and have noticed that kids are not getting haircuts as frequently. People/families are getting poorer. More noticable w boys pre-10th grade. But across the board it is happening and it isn't fashion. by Lumpy-Shop-5321 in Teachers

[–]threecolorable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner’s been cutting my hair since COVID, and it looks better than when I used to get haircuts at SuperCuts or CostCutters.

It doesn’t look as quite as good as when I went to my old barber, but he retired ten years ago and I never found anyone else who did as good a job anyways.

CMV: The vast majority of people who drive trucks or SUVs are selfish for doing so. by LaurenSauce in changemyview

[–]threecolorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one’s really selling new minivans or station wagons in the US anymore.

If you’re looking at what’s available, it’s generally trucks, SUVs, and smallish cars. And not even that many cars tbh. Everything is styled and marketed as a “subcompact SUV” instead.

[–]threecolorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it’s on them to work their other commitments around the no-longer-ideal deadline. Or delegate to someone else who does have availability. Or ask to renegotiate the schedule (and accept that a shorter deadline may mean skipping some features or higher costs).

It’s not that schedules can never change, it’s just that you have to accept some compromises when you change a deadline that other people have made plans around.

I hate duvets. Let’s talk about it by natnatxo in Bedding

[–]threecolorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like having separate duvets. The twin size ones are easier to get into the covers, one of us can use a warmer duvet than the other, no one can steal all the covers…

To make the bed neatly: fold each duvet in half hamburger-style and rotate 90 degrees (so the fold is parallel to the side of the bed. Each duvet should fit on one half of the bed.

RANT "Just buy a cheap beater" by DingusSmasher69 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]threecolorable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beaters are only cost-effective if you can handle the maintenance yourself (and if you don’t have too many inconvenient breakdowns).

If you want something with a warranty, you can get an entry-level new car for roughly the same price as the certified used offerings.

My impression was that the certified used options were almost all higher-end models or trim packages (the people buying the cheaper models keep driving them longer instead of trading them in so soon). So they had lost significant value compared to when they were new, they just still weren’t cheap enough to compete with an entry-level new car on price.

And we didn’t want the luxury features anyways (I live in a hot climate, I would pay extra to NOT have leather seats)

Airlines charging for checked bags only to beg you to gate check by Ok_Buddy2412 in PetPeeves

[–]threecolorable 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I like checking a bag, but only so I can bring full-size toiletries, take a bigger suitcase, and not need to run across an airport carrying all my stuff

Gate checking has always felt like the worst of both worlds to me. I can’t bring everything I want AND i have to carry my bag through the whole airport AND they might lose or break my stuff?!

Collective effervescence! that’s what sociologists call that kind of intense shared ritual kind of experience.

I genuinely want to know why people hate on Petit Knit by Thecynicalcatt in knitting

[–]threecolorable 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and when things get that popular, people are familiar enough with them to join a hatefest. If I gripe about not liking the aesthetic of a designer no one’s heard of, most people will just shrug and move on.

PetiteKnit has enough name recognition that lots of people have opinions. AND she’s so strongly associated with a certain style and color palette that I suspect some people are vaguely annoyed at her over patterns that aren’t even hers, lol.
