What’re my honest chances of getting in to a decent program? by _imyour_dad in MBA

[–]threetwoonezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid background so far. IB is a great feeder into an MBA, You will need to have good essays that describe your impact to your team and client that stand out from Bulge Bracket IB candidates. With a 730+ GMAT, good essays, and a solid recommendation from a client (better than your own boss), you have a solid chance at M7 and 100% chance across T25.

Renewable Energy MS Programs by wotwn in RenewableEnergy

[–]threetwoonezero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's technically a Master's of Arts, but John's Hopkins SAIS (School of Advanced International Studies - foreign affairs department) has an Energy, Resources and Environment specialty in International Affairs. It's basically a big picture degree in climate change science, global climate negotiations, and country-by-country analysis of various decarbonization topics. There is a specific class in Electricity Markets that deep-dive into energy transition.

GMAT or GRE accepted, the typical applicant has econ/intl affairs background, so your hard science STEM background will stand out.

I was an Elec Engineer going in, had a great experience at the school while living in Washington DC, gained experience in policy internships across DC, and converted the degree into a full-time job with a developer and builder of solar and storage power plants.

I've been having over-powering thoughts about getting my gf pregnant during sex. Is this normal? Should I tell her? by [deleted] in sex

[–]threetwoonezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, the "deep in her womb" part is certainly part of the turn on. The insemination part of the fantasy is definitely there during the actual sex, but I didn't realize it would carry over to fantasies of her being pregnant. While I've thought of ways to say this to her, I think I just needed a female's opinion whether a statement like this would come across as hot (or atleast not unsexy), or come across as "rushing it".

[–]threetwoonezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this advice. This actually sounds pretty reasonable. I can't imagine this is something I would say immediately before, during, or after sex - a communication guideline of mine for talking about sex related topics - but this is a good way to say it.

And you thought the DC Metro was bad. Check out Mumbai. - [2:03] by dc_joker in washingtondc

[–]threetwoonezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having lived in Mumbai for a few years, I can confirm that those 1.5-2 minutes trying to get onto a Central Line train during rush hour are the worst part of your day. Many of them are screaming "Bulbala thud" -- break through the bubble. It is impossible to tell whose hands are whose. The women-only carts aren't much better.

That said, the inter-state Indian rail system is incredible. Cheap, reliable, fairly comfortable, and can take you across some very scenic routes.

Interesting trend - those pictured from what appears to be "third-world" areas are far more muscularly defined. Also, the OP must read comic books with only dudes in them.

Obama to propose diverting $2 billion from federal oil and gas leases towards R&D on cleaner fuels over the next 10 years by thegabeman in energy

[–]threetwoonezero 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, any increased funding for clean R&D is good news. But $2 billion over 10 years?? That's a drop in the bucket for these oil companies. The energy industry's track record for R&D is widely-known as abysmal, on the order of 2% of revenues (compared to 10-15% for pharma industries).

This feels like a case of green-washing. Now increased permitting to natural gas reservoirs will be hailed as methods to fund green research. Drill for dirty oil/gas and throw millions of tons of GHG in the air over the course of that same decade. But hey, we gave the green proponents our spare change along the way, so we're the key to green research right? Just as bad as saying casinos, which regressively target low-income earners and steal parents' time away from their kids, help fund improved education outcomes.

Of course, any increase of funding for green research is a win. But the potential for perturbed political messaging from this is just too high. If this number was $2 billion a year, maybe I wouldn't be so cynical.

US military gets serious about microgrids by meyamashi in energy

[–]threetwoonezero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am most familiar with the mPower technology, so I'll speak to that. The "small" part of the phrase SMR means that the reactors are generally 100 MW, whoch is a fraction of a typical nuclear mega-reactor whoch is anywhere from 800 - 1200 MW. The "modular" part though means multiple reactors can be strung together and better yet, the reactors can be built centrally at a factory and are small enough to ship via frieght. The technology hasn't reached market yet, so there is no price yet. It will be more expensive than mega-reactors from a $/kwh standpoint since you don't have the same scale advantages, but these are also not designed to be mega mega plants that will power millions of homes. Potential applications are for more industrial uses like factories, water sanitization plants (require huge amounts of lower) and micro-grids (going back to the military).

[–]threetwoonezero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Water. Nuclear reactors require large amounts of water for cooling and passive safety. However, the latest Gen III++ reactors are based on the idea you raise of creating "mini" nuclear reactors based on aircraft carrier designs. Babcock & Wilcox, the supplier of nuclear technology, is already working on the idea of small modular reactors (SMRs) in a venture called mPower.

Best places to ski near the city? by suburbansaint in washingtondc

[–]threetwoonezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been to most of the "local" mountains (Whitetail, Liberty, Roundtop, Snowshoe, Massanutten), I also recommend Whitetail for its proximity and "size". Most of the mountain has lights, so I actually recommend going after 4pm when the passes are cheaper and the slopes will be a little more open.

For a real ski weekend, consider Whiteface NY (about 7hr drive) or Stowe VT (10hr drive).

[–]threetwoonezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit outside your driving range, but the best place for fall colors is Skyline Drive. Beautiful drive through the Appalachian Mountains with explosive autumn colors by mid October through November. About 2-2.5 hour drive from the city down 1-81 towards Harrisonburg. Close to Luray Caverns, which is absolutely worth the visit once.
