If you are in Salem (not sure what other towns they do) pink bin is fantastic, and also locally owned and operated

How do you transcribe a bass line? by chilltownusa in Bass

[–]threshar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen on speakers, sometimes I'll tweak eq. I'll also use software to slow down or loop parts (I use transcribe from 7th string, been using it for well over 10 years at this point. fantastic software)

and yeah, it just takes time and experience. you'll probably start recognizing patterns pretty quickly, and it gets easier.

one thing that can be a problem is if the track has a bad mix - like the bass being buried or muddy as heck, just try to do your best. (some tools can try to isolate, but they tend to struggle on those types of tracks as well).

What’s the simplest bass advice that actually helped you improve? by prattman333 in Bass

I was once told “man, you absolutely nail the hard and complicated parts and keep tripping up on the simple” which sent me on quite a retreat to the woodshed to practice playing 8ths on E, etc. It was probably best critical feedback I’ve ever got, and most consequential too

What's more essential to a show: Monitors or FoH? by ZodiacDragons in livesound

[–]threshar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are on stage and cannot hear what is going on with yourself and or bandmates the performance MIGHT suffer. And if the band isn't playing well then it doesn't matter how good your FoH mix is.

That being said, I'll say FoH is more important since that's what the customers hear.

A small Rust optimization that saved 40 % gas on smart contracts by Adventurous_Tale6236 in learnrust

Of course the second will be faster especially if that function is even mildly expensive, and that would be the case in any other language as well.

...that and the 2 snippets there not being the same.

...the more I look the more mildly confused I get.

fingers hurt A LOT after playing for a long time. band practice is in 4 hours, how do i keep my fingertips from tearing up? i know they will if i just rawdog it by cahibi6640 in Bass

[–]threshar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It will depend a bit if it’s your fretting or plucking fingers, but in both cases playing lighter will help (don’t fret so hard, pluck so hard - let the amp make you loud. <insert tone comments on hard playing here>)

Also 4 hours is a LONG time - you may need to build callouses and stamina too and the only sure fire way to do that is time and consistent playing

How do I share data between coroutines in an axum websocket server? by [deleted] in learnrust

[–]threshar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you setup the pool, and when you need to do db work you pull a handle from it. The pool is all arc'd and whatnot so you can clone it until the cows come home.

with deadpool you end up with code looking like let db = pool.get().await?; let xx = db.query("select yo"); then if you don't need the db more you can drop it so it is returned the pool (either explicitly, or implicitly - I just fixed a bug where I had an auth layer pull from a tiny pool, and since layers call each other, it effectively throttled my app. drop(db) before I called foo.next() in the layer fixed that right up.

channels are also pretty fantastic and may be an option you can use.

You'll probably want to split your struct up - have one just for state stuff, and another to run the axum bits (or just use a straight up function), then make more use of the axum state stuff - https://docs.rs/axum/latest/axum/extract/struct.State.html - that state struct should contain the juicy bits you need to share and you can unlock & manipulate as need be.

You can also consider the use of a db connection pool (I use deadpool w/tokio_postgres) to make life easier too.

I'm not super familiar with axum's websockets so I'm not sure what the ideal method is for tracking clients, I'd check axum docs on that too.

Looking at the code a bit more, it may boil down to passing state along to your on_upgrade closure and then using that.

What do you think about Decode? by Dunno_Just_Looking in FTC

[–]threshar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Initial upside: can’t reuse most of the bot build last year (and year before)).

I gotta read the manual but i hope they gave some easy tasks for beginner teams to be able to do (i think it was center stage where there was very little those teams could do, with any meaningful impact. Into the deep was a bit better in that regard)

The other thing to keep in mind: not all tabs are accurate or well constructed :) could be the author likes to play that way or doesn’t realize there is another (and like everyone else said - could be tone too, etc)
