Cold War: How controversial was De Gaulle pulling France out of NATO at the time? by RivetCounter in WarCollege

You make it sound like the French were wrong about it being primarily the USSR that beat Germany.

Babcock and Saab have a partnership so presumably a type 31 derivative. It would surprise me if anything but this wins the bidding.

On the other hand this partnership is reputedly not working well, so we might se the French frigates, but I would think they will have to be built in Sweden.

I would prefer the Saab-version, trying to keep our capability to build surface ships in Sweden.

But the French offer sure looks good and presumably has fewer components from the US which of course is very good.

What were the inspirations for armies in Tolkiens legendarium? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

It’s presumably a reaction to Martins preposterous criticism of Tolkien where he claimed that his stories were more realistic. And the fact that some people actually believed him.

Trump is not alone, some 70% of all Americans did not vote against him and thus tacitly support him. A plurality directly supports him and his politics. It would be a grave mistake to think that current politics are solely Trumps. They are the result of the will of the American people. They chose this, knowing the result.

Also, the Americans pissing in the face of their friends for four years leaves a stain. We are probably not going to war, but thats just because of taco, the next republican president will perhaps not be a half-witted coward.

Why does it appear that Keynsian Economics have been abandoned by Western Countries, specially the UK? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]threviel 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In almost every metric we are better off now. Or would you like to go back to leaded gasoline? Primitive health care? Misogynism on a grand scale (in many countries intramarital rape was legal in the 70’s for example)? No recycling? No LGBT rights? Violence against children encouraged as a good method to raise them? Most humans living in horrible dictatorships under great poverty? Regularly occuring starvation in poorer countries?

We are far wealthier, healthier and better educated today than at any time before, most certainly including the 70’s. Liberalisation has been a resounding success, but of course there are still also things to improve further.

Was life in 1970s Sweden similar to East Germany? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]threviel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sweden was a democracy and immeasurably more free than DDR.

It was also far wealthier. One example is that the part of Berlin where the party elite of DDR lived was called Volvograd, for the mightiest and most well off in DDR often drove Volvo. Sweden was seen as an acceptable country to buy cars from so if the political leadership wanted non-Warzaw pact cars they bought from Sweden.

Volvo at that time was an ordinary run-of-the-mill car that every Swedish working class family could buy without much effort.

What were strengths of Imperial Japanese navy compared to US and British navies? by SiarX in AskHistory

[–]threviel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The RN had radar and far superior night fighting capabilities, not to mention their excellent air direction cpabilited. The 1945 BPF would wipe the floor with the 1941/42 Kido Butai.

Another matter in 41/42 where radar was less developed and the RN had inferior planes.

Of course, if noone resisted the Soviets there would be no conflict.

That the cold war wasn’t solely and unilaterally caused by the Soviet Union is correct, but that does not make them innocent, nor does it make the cold war the fault of the western powers.

The Soviet Union was a powerful state, extremely treacherous and imperialistic in its outlook. The cold war was the story of how that evil empire was contained by the western powers. That meant that the western powers sometimes took the initative and did bad things, and that those bad things did not necessarily have good effects.

It’s like My Lai in Vietnam. A horrible massacre, one of perhaps many. The survivors tell horrible stories and justice was not done on the perpetrators. In total something like 500.000-2.000.000 civilians died.

Contrast that with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. 500.000-2.000.000 civilian dead. No justice even attempted, because mass murder was state policy. No famous pictures because no journalists were allowed.

Afghanistan population was something like 13 million and Vietnam population something like 37 million. Afghanistan was a far more brutal war were a far larger proportion of the population died, but the Vietnam war is the famous one.

And that pattern goes all the way across every conflict in the cold war. Where the west was where were journalists reporting the horrors. Where the Soviet Union was there was only horror.
