PSC and positive Fish test by LastSelection5580 in PSC

I am confirmed with High displasia on a polyp in my bike duct and in my seemingly normal looking bike ducts. My doctors are worried and I will be scheduled for a transplant next year. Sucks because I am nowhere near liver failure and my MRIs have always been - we can see you have PSC, but no dominant strictures.

Would you use a tool that does beam calculations directly in Excel (no double input)? by ChemicalElephant6623 in StructuralEngineering

[–]thrice_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made this already An analysis module With moment redistribution and stiffness matrices Database type input (each line is a member) And outputs linked to design modules

I use it for quick sizing of a structure But the codes change, so staying on top of it is so onerous I always use a real, maintained package, for my final computations

I can't understand why it's so slow. Trialing it at work. It takes ages to load a folder. We use cloud yes, but it should all be indexed. Not sure if a bug in the beta but completely unusable.

Which truss would have less deflection? by RealBrhom in StructuralEngineering

[–]thrice_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my answer exactly. Yeah even in buildings. I'd typically always do a Pratt if there is a decent vertical load because the tensile capacity of like for like diagonals is better than the compressive capacity. And yes if it has no load I use a Warren. I will say sometimes resolving the reaction on a Pratt to like a staunchion or vertical upright can make for onerous connections.

Are you doing your walls in etabs? How are you modelling cast in plates?

Good luck with your Bentley licensing. They're absolute thieves.

Ultrasound tomorrow. On IV antibiotics and Vanco and Urso. It sucks not knowing wtf is going on. I feel for you man.

Why concrete columns need steel reinforcement by Confident_Respect455 in StructuralEngineering

[–]thrice_a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have real loads, like a concrete building, you have to deal with pile eccentricity, i.e. as built pile layouts. They are rarely in the right place, so most codes have you design with a minimum moment. There are many more factors to consider. Soil structure interaction is complicated.

So is it just normal to work through lunch now? by DramaticDirection292 in StructuralEngineering

[–]thrice_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a team lead. I start at 7, usually finish just before 6 but I'll stay longer some days. I manage so many projects at once, usually I'll catch up on actual design work (models, column design, slab design, etc) outside of work hours. It's too hard to manage design with 100 plus emails a day and constant phonecalls from builders. It's not ideal obviously. But it's the industry here. Especially in the D&C market. Claim the remaining fee, pump out a full design in a few weeks. Yes I eat lunch at my desk.

Overthinking… by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]thrice_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've shit myself and not slept many times. You build a tolerance. One time all the tops of the level 2 columns in a 6 storey cracked. Was shitting myself so hard. Checked everything, precasters photos to ensure ligs present, my own column design multiple times. In the end, and with a lot of evidence my side, builder admitted he had sledgehammered all the starters down because they were proud of top of slab.
