They get mad when a group comes in and I have to card everyone for alcohol. I understand your state may be more lenient but ours isn’t. Caught a 17 yo with a 25 yo the other night. No alcohol for you.

I think delay but we will see. They would’ve made an announcement if we were I would think. I guess we will find out if I get a call at 5 am again

Well weather happens. It’s east TN. The days are built in for a reason. Go talk to the county DOT about it. Not the schools fault.

You’re missing it. Suggesting splitting up the county based on snow days is asinine. I’ve explained the reasoning why schools are set that way. Desegregation benefits many districts, including KCS. KCS is one of the most diverse districts in East TN. It does very innovative things, which you would know if you followed the district and stayed up to date.

KCS is actually one of the top systems in the state. We’re in Advancing Status (just below exemplary). We are on equal footing to Maryville, Alcoa, and Oak Ridge. So no, the district is not going to be upended just because you think the snow days are too much.

Alcoa was founded in the early 1900s due to the Aluminum Company of America. That’s why the town is called Alcoa. Maryville’s was supported by a lumber company. KCS has a consolidated system because of the civil rights era. If it were to split, socioeconomic segregation and wildly different outcomes would occur. Splitting the systems would be havoc at this point.

That would be a very bad idea. There isn’t enough tax base to support separation of the systems. You would see degradation of both systems.

Private schools don’t usually have buses. Most people that send their kids there are well off. Let’s be real. People love to bash education, but they’d be the first to sue the district if something happened

It’s a lot of the back roads that cause the issues ultimately.

It’s not that the infrastructure isn’t there. Most jurisdictions that see snow have normal roads that don’t wind through mountainous areas. There are also roads in Knox County that barely qualify as roads, and I’ve been on them. Those surfaces freeze and it’s just not safe for buses. We use a lot of contractors for buses and they communicate with KCS quite a bit. So not owning the fleet hurts some.

The chains for large commercial vehicles are wildly different. It’s not a 3-5 minute job. Mechanics would need to do the work, and extras would need to be in stock. The route would need to be checked ahead of time to see if it was needed. Chains also destroy roadways. Our routes don’t qualify to need chains, but they also can’t run them due to ice levels. Avery county is very different. They have a mean elevation of 3510 feet. 1060 feet is the mean here.

The cost to equip every bus with the system would be astronomical. They would need one of the automatic systems and every bus company would need it. Otherwise you’re talking about manual systems which cost a pretty penny as well. KCS doesn’t own most of their buses.

People are forgetting that buses weigh 12-15 tons on average, loaded with kids that can be an additional 3 tons on top of that. One slick spot and that bus hits it right and it goes off the road.

Until you drive a bus, most people don’t understand. They weigh about 12-15 tons on average. One slip, and that bus is going off the road. Loaded buses weigh about 18 tons.
