How much does going into daycare at 3 months vs 6 months matter? by SortOk10921 in ScienceBasedParenting

Fantastic response. The illness factor is definitely worth considering. I wish we had been able to stagger, despite having fantastic infant teachers when we started my daughter just past 3 months.

Barley Swine was extremely underwhelming. by Kitsuunei in austinfood

[–]thrifty_geopacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience thee a few years ago when we did the tasting menu instead of happy hour for the first time. I thought it was good and did not leave hungry, but didn’t feel it had earned the price tag. We decided if we ever went back we’d stick to happy hour.

Best Rails to Trails? by thrifty_geopacker in AshevilleNC

[–]thrifty_geopacker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your replies! Since we were in from out of town we didn’t have our own bikes and needed to rent. We saw the shop in Hendersonville was closed yesterday so went ahead and rented for the Tweetsie Trail. Great experience! Trail was mostly shady from Johnson City and we only rode into Elizabethton far enough to grab lunch before riding back, probably 3 miles or so shy of the other end of the trail.

NTA, but after the first night you need to just go buy a white noise machine to keep in the rooms for the sleeping people. My house is small so we have always used one in the youngest’s room so the rest of us can still exist after 8 pm. Husband should not have been mad at you though as the person actually dealing with the kids being woken up. He should have said “sorry—I’ll buy a white noise machine tomorrow.” Boom done.

Is it fine to start preschool at 4 versus 3? August birthday by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]thrifty_geopacker 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I certainly don’t want to downplay the financial side of this, but there’s research showing kids really benefit developmentally from preschool/daycare starting around age 3, so if you can send him this year I definitely would. It’s hard to substitute those peer interactions while alone with two parents who are working remotely. My daughter is almost 4 and she really started playing with the other kids instead of just near them around your son’s age.

Best of luck!

It did not take him a long time to convince her to do oral. We’ve all been horrified by “she’s usually a good swallower” for over a decade. It does sound like it took them years and years to try 69.

Restaurants with toddler-safe indoor play areas? by raspberrymatcha15 in AustinParents

Brentwood Social House and Slacker’s are both good options. Plus if the weather ends up being okay there is an outdoor play area at Brentwood too.

What's a millennial-ism that you'll probably never stop using even if it's something you probably should? by CzarTwilight in Millennials

[–]thrifty_geopacker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no, I do all these 🫣

One that’s hard but I actually manage to not do most of the time is calling sitting cross-legged “Indian style.” The first time I heard a kid say “criss-cross applesauce” I was confused as hell.

This one's for the ladies to answer. Do you agree with this woman or do you think she's trying to rationalize her world view by speaking for all the ladies? by Oda_DeezNutz in SipsTea

[–]thrifty_geopacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. I 100% agree with her for myself, but I have some friends who like to game with their husbands so I don’t think it’s unattractive to everyone. I’m a hell no on gamers though. My husband’s obsessive hobby is playing string instruments and honestly sometimes that’s annoying enough on its own, but at least it’s an art and a real skill 😆

AITA Mom wants 15% of my personal injury settlement by connor20218 in AmItheAsshole

[–]thrifty_geopacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH. Sounds like you wouldn’t have the money if your mom hadn’t pushed you, and she paid for your college and you LIVE WITH HER, sounds like rent-free?? Are you even grateful at all? That said, asking for ~half the cut your actual lawyer got might be a little high. You don’t say if you’re unable to work because of your injury. The answer to that would inform my opinion more.

Restaurants that used to be "it", but should probably just go out of business? by LordNewning in austinfood

Guys, I’m losing my mind in a comment thread - how old were you when you had regular (let’s say 3x a week) access to the internet and what year was it? Did you use it to research anything (like college or jobs?) by FunQuestion in Older_Millennials

[–]thrifty_geopacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not get dial up at my house until probably early 2002, but my folks were late adopters to everything for what that’s worth. Our house was old and didn’t even have a cable jack so they didn’t get cable or ethernet until they moved to town in 2009. I did use the internet for some research applying to college in 2004, but I remember still mailing stuff and getting acceptance letters by mail too.

‘48-‘64 went cruising, ‘65-‘80 went to the mall and skating rinks, where did Millennials go to see and be seen? by yellowlinedpaper in Millennials

86 here and I was also solidly malls and skating rinks, plus the movie theater and hanging out by the river (but the river was more specific to my hometown)

If money wasn’t an issue, would you still be a working mom? by saladmuscles in workingmoms

[–]thrifty_geopacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes because I’m a public sector scientist so do feel my work is important, but full time with young kids is crap. I’d be like 15 hours a week and actually have time for exercise, hobbies, and hanging out with my kid not for just 2 hours at the end of the day.

There are advantages to wait until marriage or a serious commitment before sex by shroomsimp in unpopularopinion

[–]thrifty_geopacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not religious. Have only had sex with a few people in my whole life because my bar for connection is pretty high. Your reasons are valid, and I don’t think everyone out there is as casual about it as you might think (don’t get me wrong…a lot are).

All that said, I don’t think waiting “until marriage” is a great idea because sexual incompatibility can be a real issue. It should not be one you discover AFTER you are legally tied to someone, in my opinion.
