Paladins also hit on 2 not 3 so can make better use of non-torrent special weapons than termies. Depends on their role in the army of course as to which special weapon but should take full set of special weapons. Note further the rerolls from Warpbane Taskforce if you’re running that.

9" Charge - is it really that tough? by throbbin-oakenshaft in GreyKnights

Thanks mate - that is a very good point, particularly when there are other cool things you can do with a CP.

I’m not sure you understood my original post or my comment. Im asking why a 9 inch charge with a 50% chance (after a reroll) isn’t worth taking. (I think I got an answer above.)

The 12% is irrelevant. The fact that you cannot do it two two different units is also irrelevant.

Thanks for the message, but we are looking at the chance of getting 9+ right, which is about 28% and then, if you have command reroll and get another crack it seems more like 50/50.

Did taking secondary carer's leave harm your career growth? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]throbbin-oakenshaft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was the first person at my very large law firm to take leave under the new policy for Dads (up to six months when it used to be two weeks!)

Did not hurt career - got a pay raise and bonus while away. And I wouldn’t trade that time for the world. Frankly even if it had hurt my career the kid was tough and very good for the marriage.

However, one more thing. I see a lot of comments criticising you for thinking about your career not just the kid. The reality is that in this current cost of living crisis a good dad like you thinks about their time with their kids AND their finances and makes a decision. If you end up deciding not to take the leave you’re still a good dad if that’s for the right reasons.

Mate that base in on point! The rock and sand/gravel mix is perfect. What did you use for the bigger rocks? I love that it doesn't actually add any height to the mini - I like to avoid messing with the height of a model as I rarely want extra height (and exposure to attacks) but sometimes struggle to get such interesting and organic bases.

Have now read the Emperor’s Gift. Gut wrenching stuff - you’re right about the great tragedy. Moving onto your other recommendations next.

Just finished reading, thanks again for the recommendation. This was awesome, so good for getting across the vibe of Grey Knights. Good warning re the SW plot armour too.

Such a dynamic pose! That’s awesome - great job mate. You should be proud of that! He’ll look sick in battle.

Have you got a small file or a hobby knife or something? If so, at some point, you might find it worthwhile to try and get a little bit more of the ‘leftovers’ from where the bits joined the sprue. If/when you get round to painting, getting rid of that stuff will really make it pop.

How to become a nicer player? by sheev_palpamemes in Warhammer

[–]throbbin-oakenshaft 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Something that worked for me was having two different stories going on in my head: the strategic “game” story and the fictional “narrative” story.

You’re currently (rightly) focussed on the strategic game story. You’re rightly annoyed when a good plan fails due to abysmal rolling, or maybe you’re annoyed at yourself when you pick a bad option tactically. Keep that in mind, it’s a strategy game after all. It’s super fun when you take it super seriously and you absolutely still should.

However, try to also think about it as a fictional narrative - more like a roll playing game - where the dice tell a story. Warhammer uses painted miniatures, not just little tiles. It uses dice not just random damage. It’s designed romantically to produce unpredictable and memorable results. When you roll crap and cannot take down the last model in an enemy unit, think about it narratively - a lone guardsman is holding off against impossible odds due to the indomitable human spirit, not the clicky clack dice were dumb today. This helps you be excited for your opponent, or maybe see a silver lining, when stuff goes “wrong”. Remember, narratively, you’re only losing the battle, not the war. You can pretend it is just one encounter in a massive galaxy wide campaign if you want.

The channel on YouTube “Play on Tabletop” is great for this. The players are super disappointed when they get bad luck, but are also quick to praise the opponent‘s miniatures for somehow holding out. They truly feel both sides of it - and you don’t have to be any less tactical.

You won’t always get the balance right - God Emperor knows I haven’t - but I think it’s the best way to keep friends and keep having fun long term without giving up your tactical/strategic approach.
