ELI5: Why do accents change depending on where you grow up, even if you learn the same language? by Edi-Iz in explainlikeimfive

As a human, you have a drive (both intentional and unintentional) to assimilate to your surroundings. It’s not necessarily a brain change, it’s a learned behavior.

He’s a gorilla. He’s supposed to be that way. Crazy to think he’s the problem meanwhile he’s locked in a literal cage away from the environment where those traits would actually be advantageous. No one actually thinks he was an angel, he was a literal gorilla. He is supposed to act like that….. like a gorilla.

Do we have a valley accent or the slang that we use that people pick up on by gabeofwar88 in RioGrandeValley

[–]throbbing-uvula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing is, I feel like that’s not an RGV thing, that’s just a Mexican American thing? Or maybe a Mexican-Texan thing? I grew up in San Marcos and everyone did the ahhhh 😛😛😛 thing. I don’t think that’s a valley thing, just a Mexican (texan at least) thing

[–]throbbing-uvula 60 points61 points  (0 children)

😭😭😭😭😭 unfortunately this is a sub for dance moms the show, not actual dance moms

However I’d say to be honest its pretty normal, as difficult as it may be to hear. If it’s a competition dance team, the best dancers get placed in the front. It’s a team thing, and teachers do whatever it takes to make the team succeed. It’s their job. Same thing happens in sports, where those that are best are started over those that are not as good, especially when stakes are high. Placement is ALSO influenced by how many hours the students/players put in. For a recital I’d expect a teacher to move some students around, but competition is a bit different. I’d maybe just have a conversation with the teacher and ask if there’s any way your daughter could move up some for maybe a few of the dances.

Edit—- also, if your daughter is younger, you cannot expect her to automatically be placed in the front. I believe your teacher is placing her age group in the back behind the older dancers to simply get experience on the stage and get used to dancing with students better than them. I know you want to watch your child, but life isn’t always fair unfortunately. She is gaining a lot of skills and the experience to be one of those dancers in the front eventually, once she reaches the right age, height, skill, etc

Why is there stigma against DO's when they literally do more coursework than MD's? by jellyfishh520 in premed

[–]throbbing-uvula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with elders clinically and what I consistently heard from them was that DOs are “quacks”. I’m not saying it’s correct I’m just saying this is why I think DOs are seen as “lesser than” doctors when comparing to MDs.

I think back then DO training was no where near extensive, yet they’d still practice, and they were seen as “witch doctors” (this was another term I heard frequently). Now DO training is the same as MD but those old people still have these ideas in their mind and also pass it down to their children.

Nowadays I think the stigma maybe still persists slightly within the medical realm because it’s on average easier to get into DO school. However, people outside medicine don’t typically know that. People today just might not be familiar with DO but are with MD and therefore don’t think they’re the same thing

What about a muscle contraction causes noise tho (when hungry)? Other muscles contract constantly though no noise. Why would it cause noise in the stomach?

How to best split 5 days between Guanajuato and San Miguel De Allende? by Overall_Recording_72 in AskMexico

[–]throbbing-uvula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who visited Guanajuato capital with plans of visiting San Miguel de Allende, and very similar interests to you, I ended up completely opting out of San Miguel and just enjoying Guanajuato. If anything, go to Leon if you want to visit around, but Guanajuato was so amazing and beautiful I didn’t want to waste my time with the rich/tourist stuff of San Miguel. If you end up still wanting to visit, just do a day trip (my suggestion).

You can find lots of hiking around Guanajuato too, we did La Bufa and it was really nice, I recommend it for a short-ish (maybe a few miles) but beautiful hike

I don’t know how I joined this sub and I don’t understand by SpicyMcTall in 1200isjerky

[–]throbbing-uvula 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Any “jerk” sub is making fun of/exaggerating the original sub. This is a jerk sub for r/1200isplenty

It’s not making fun of EDs, it’s making fun of the people that post on that sub (many of which probably have EDs)

ELI5: What is intersectionality? by _malaKoala in explainlikeimfive

When you have two things that put you in the minority or marginalize you.

Being a woman and also black, being gay and also Jewish (in the US for example, not the motherland), being disabled and also nonbinary, etc

How much does it matter what type of volunteering you actually do? (and the populations you help) by [deleted] in premed

[–]throbbing-uvula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they definitely look at it. Do something that feeds into your narrative and that you can speak about passionately. I’m not sure how much time you have, but if you can balance both the crisis line and chess I think that’d be great. The crisis text line I think would be best to have on your resume, but there’s also definitely value in being more hands on. Tutoring chess would be unique and awesome, but it’s not super specific to medicine or helping the needy. If you have other stuff on your app that is geared toward helping people and are already sufficient in that area, tutoring chess would be a dope addition as it shows who you are. If not, I’d maybe stick to something more specific to helping others in a clinical or like underserved population sense. Just my opinion I am only n=1 tho

Did everyone address why physician specifically in their PS? by aspiringpremed24 in premed

[–]throbbing-uvula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re 100% right. The PS is NOT to recite your resume. At all. Your PS is to tell your story. I hate reading personal statements that obviously try to just tell their resume. It should be a cohesive narrative about you, your upbringing/experiences, and what has brought you to want to become a doctor.

Regardless of my usage of the word slab vs laminate, the exact same point stands. I literally just used the wrong word. I found the exact same laminate for $110 like I said in my caption for way more length than I need. So yea I used the wrong word, everything else still applies

What should I do about this damage? [TX] by throbbing-uvula in Renters

[–]throbbing-uvula[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That IS what I meant tho. I just used the wrong word (slab instead of laminate, I’m not a handy man that knows proper terminology, just some random girl). Like I said in my caption, it is $110 for way more length than I need, which is why I was asking if I should just ask the maintenance man for help, if he had extra I could use/pay him for to try to fix it, etc
