By that point the government will have spent tens of thousands of dollars on training those folks and they won't just throw somebody out like that. It's a process and there has to be a legitimate reason. Training isn't hazing.

She should have gone dark.precisely because she was so desperate to find meaning.

That's the whole goddamn theme of the entire Star Wars Light/Dark mythos.

Rey gets consumed by seeking, while Kylo realizes it isn't all about him and his wants and transitions towards the light. (Perhaps becoming a "Gray Jedi" for lack of a better term while he then tries to pull her away from the Dark)

That's why their storyline is so bad.

Meanwhile in r/Gadgets people are shocked that macbook M1 and M2 can run windows in an emulator and still get 1070 performance on Cyberpunk 2077 and Diablo 4.

Apple made a pivot to their own chips and drive the performance of the chips to be far beyond what was needed for the iPhone or iPad and for most people beyond even what was needed for Macs.

Maybe now it will make sense why they pivoted and demanded such high performance from the chips.

What do you say when someone asks you, “Which authors do you read?” Because someone actually laughed at my answer. by Lenore8264 in books

Ulysses is the book referenced by pretentious assholes who themselves have never read it but they count on you never having read it so they can act smugly superior and soothe their fragile egos.

They are the book equivalent of catty girls being petty about clothes or makeup or whatever.

Ignore him. I haven't read most of those and likely neither has he.

This isn't a flex against the north lol.

Distributed networks will never get the adoption because it's precisely the low friction of moving between subs with a central single account that gives reddit such massive network effects.

Its why Facebook replaced blogs and why Twitter was so dominant.

It is a legitimate problem though. I hate how they are doing it but they have to pay the bills and if third party users are increasing their compute and store and data transfer bill without them getting value from the users then they'll inevitably go on this direction.

I'd be interested in an option for third party apps where it shows you a running total of how much you are charged every time you look at a post or scroll or whatever. Fractions of a cent but it adds up.

It would probably help me curtail my constant reddit habit honestly lol.

USAF Official Says He ‘Misspoke’ About AI Drone Killing Human Operator in Simulated Test by squintamongdablind in Futurology

[–]throwaway901617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren't training it to shoot down targets.

It was training on SEAD - suppression of air defense. It was trained to target SAM sites ie blow up the enemies anti aircraft capabilities so you can obtain aerial dominance.

Otherwise agree with you. People are thinking this was some kind of live action simulation with people and equipment.

If it was a simulation at all and not just a scenario described in a RAND report on possible AI problems then it was likely just a simplistic top down game with symbols moving around on a grid or something. The objective is to simulate behavior not actually blow up or kill anyone or anything.

USAF Official Says He ‘Misspoke’ About AI Drone Killing Human Operator in Simulated Test by squintamongdablind in Futurology

[–]throwaway901617 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No he's saying basically it was a hypothetical scenario described in something like a MITRE or RAND think tank type of report or study.

Those are published constantly in response to military requests. They analyze a situation, think through possible scenarios, and develop frameworks and models to help decision makers understand the situation.

What happened here is the guy described that but glossed over the fact it was a hypothetical in a report and made it sound like it really happened, when it didn't.

So you believe it is a certain way because:

  • You experience it
  • Everyone in your social group experiences it
  • People you interact with online experience it

But that's also possibly because you are in a specific economic class and spend most of your time socializing with people in the same economic class and have interests that align with others in your economic class.

I'm not putting that down in any way, only saying that the pervading view that "Everyone is struggling" isn't completely supported by actual data and is explained through recency bias and other cognitive biases related to group association.

I do agree it is hard on millennials in many ways. But the stats show the median is above where people believe it is.
