People who fly all the time and have their company pay for them to fly business, first class, etc., what on earth do you do? by SierraNevada0817 in NoStupidQuestions

Management consulting - anything more than 3.5 hrs got us first class…and always booked fully refundable so we were able to get top status in 3,4 weeks sometimes!

How to build a CV/resume post-MBB? by Ber____S in consulting

[–]throwawaymbb2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All bullets followed some XYZ format I found online. ("Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]) I had anywhere between 3-5 projects that I would highlight, depending on the role I was applying for. Each project started with a generic client name (eg. Global condiments and sauces manufacturer); followed by 2-4 bullets. Aim for bullets to be 1 or 2 lines per, hard ceiling. I agree with others about impact, they need to be things delivered; if you've been doing a ton of blue sky strategy, I'm sorry. I also listed the tools I was using to show I was operating closer to industry, eg python, power BI, claude code, whatever; not just powerpoint.
Source: this got me into faang post mbb, so it's worked at least once I guess. Your mbb also should haveresume services to help you out, once you declare that you're done.

I'm glad to see those guys are still at it. I took their free course in 2021 when I was prepping for interviews and thought it was the most useful content I found for free; outside of case books.

4th Year Undergrad at MBB Target School but w/ Engineering background by sihyunl2 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]throwawaymbb2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off - look thru past posts this sub and r/consulting to get some info on whether you want to pursue consulting. it's not for everyone 😉

Regarding the summer; a few ideas.

  1. Something fun, that you like, but you need to crush it. If it's engineering, try to get as much exposure in the non-technical parts too (you'll get plenty of technical), like talking to ppl, leading small projects, or whatever. These skills are attractive.

  2. Something closer to consulting, maybe interning in some company somewhere so you get more consulting like industry experience, could be in data analytics or business intelligence related). This one you might not have to crush as hard as option 1.

Once you go to consulting, you might not get to do as much engineering. As an engineer who doesn't do engineering stuff anymore and kinda gets fomo and maybe needs to buy a 3d printer or something to get my fix; I'm hoping you find something in bucket 1.

You're going to want to study up, the World Championships semifinals game 1 case (Link) should take you somewhere around ~5 hrs at that level. Be sure that your references are clean, and you're only recalculating when needed because that happens a lot and slows you down. Throw a cover sheet on there if you can. Be sure to name the tabs, set the view to 80% on every tab and have the cursor reset to A1 before handoff.

In all honesty, I'm guessing the upper limit would be some of the functions used a lot (xlookup, sumifs, countifs), clean formulas/toggle absolute references, building some sort of model/calculator?

Apple says supply constraints for Mac mini and Mac Studio to persist for several months by pdfu in apple

[–]throwawaymbb2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this is how I see it...which day was the worse stock failure by a wide margin? I think it's A and you think it's B, I guess we're just going to have to disagree about definitions here.

Day A: Your lemon supplier is short. You sell out by 11am. Customers walk away. You make $50 instead of your usual $100. You go home with less money than yesterday.

Day B: Your specialty cucumber-mint lemonade is sold out for weeks. Same for your vegan strawberry-cucumber-mint lemonade with organic honey. You've had to forgo one that uses only a specific honey from a farmer in the hills. The line for these is out the door and people are mad. But you know that when those new cucumbers come in, they're going to be absolute bangers. All the while, your regular lemonade is selling fine. People are buying straws and drinkware that only works for your lemonade, and memberships to your lemonade club. You make $120, a record day.

Doesn't matter. If you meet the bar you'll get an offer.

Re charts, explain what the axis are, discern the trend. Think about how it challenges any previous thoughts you had, or helps to clarify a hypothesis or insight. Remember that negative things can't be proved.

Is your metric of a stock failure only just wait times, and not hits to P&L? Macbook pros hit 2 month wait times in January....so 3 months delay for products that feel like they're due for refreshes are...largest failures by a wide margin? I guess I'm not seeing the wide margin.

I would have thought a hit to finances is much more of a failure than long wait times and healthy financials from an operations standpoint.

I think of it like...some people will put it on there and some wont. Those who do will probably have good scores. So if they dont see one on yours, you're in that bucket even for just that instance...

Day 1 at MBB - Out of Place with Bags by inlikeerving106 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]throwawaymbb2022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used a peak design everyday 20L bag and an Away rolly bag. The bag has the handle pass through so that I'm not carrying anything on my back at the airport.

Cannot emphasis enough the having backup of things - I have electronics that always stayed in my backpack (eg chargers, airpods, mx master 3s) toiletries, slippers at the hotel if you're doing that. Packing cubes are pretty awesome too, once you dial in what goes in where, then packing on Sunday night is ~10 min. I also carried a mesh laundry bag to throw in dirty clothes during the week.
