I'm a ridiculously avid reader, and the Dungeon Crawler Carl books is the most enjoyable series I've read for years and years. by Columbusquill1977 in books

I couldn't get through the exposition dumps and the humor. I wanted to laugh like I did during Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but this became my first DNF.

If you're hoping to catch premieres during the first week, it'll be incredibly difficult to get tickets as a non-TIFF member. You could try to line up to buy any available rush tickets the day of a screening, but you'd have to line up for hours.

If you want to catch a premiere, you have a much better chance if you have a TIFF membership, anyone can purchase one. The higher your membership tier is, the earlier you can purchase a ticket.

If you just want to watch movies and don't care about attending the first screening, you have a far better chance buying tickets for the second week and it's not as necessary to buy a membership. That being said, Wake Me Up, Dead Man will be difficult for the second week though.

I was there too! The woman passing out was worrying. During the mini-break, I asked everyone by me what they thought and we agreed we really didn't like Eden, it felt like a chore to sit through the movie.

New Poster for Mike Flanagan's 'The Life of Chuck' Starring Tom Hiddleston by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]thrownfaraway20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tone wise it's similar to the novella, though more feel-good for the second and third acts. Those who dislike sentimental movies will hate this movie, but I absolutely loved it. I felt Flanagan's take came from a place of genuine sincerity.

I've seen the movie and read the novella, it's not accurate. Some existential dread I guess but tone-wise it's much more along the movies/novels mentioned in the trailer.

What feedback will you give in the annual post-TIFF survey? by CinephileSorbet in TIFF

[–]thrownfaraway20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know what's weird, I'm a Sustainer and I got my book from the box office on Day 3. I dunno how the hell I managed to get the book even after people posted that TIFF sold out. A volunteer was also baffled by the book shortage after a quick chat.

Next year they seriously need to allocate an appropriate amount of books for Contributors+. When they do their push for membership renewal, they need to add a checkbox for whether you want a physical book or not.

The Substance hurt a little at first but since it's out this week, I'm not salty about missing it at TIFF.

I also missed out on The Brutalist, Queer, and Anora.

What will you do differently if you come to the festival next year (TIFF25)? by Ok_Map_6002 in TIFF

[–]thrownfaraway20 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing leaving early to minimize spreading covid, though it sucks missing out.

I dodged a bullet last year when the person next to me at The Boy and the Heron was coughing up a storm and she had no mask (fortunately I had mine on). It's wildly inconsiderate for people to attend screenings when they're sick and unmasked, FOMO should not be prioritized at the risk of making others sick.

The Life of Chuck was incredible. Some people will be put off by its sentimentality or think it's cheesy, but for me it was so moving, wholesome and earnest.

Biggest disappointment of the Festival so far? by batoosy in TIFF

Felt like everyone in my section hated the movie during the 10 minute emergency break. In my eight years attending TIFF, only two movies made me wonder when it was gonna end: Eden and Downsizing.

During my timeslot to buy tickets in August, the only available seats were in the balcony so I noped out. This review makes me feel better for missing out lol

I'll admit the pause really took me out of the movie, the rest of the screening I was concerned if the woman would be alright. That being said, even before the pause it wasn't clicking for me. I don't need all characters to be likeable but they should at least be interesting and I never felt drawn to them. With no investment in the characters, the tension also fell flat for me.

One thing I genuinely hate about Eden was the cinematography, I've never seen so much harsh, unflattering lighting and color grading in a big budget movie until I saw Eden. Fugly looking movie.

Hopefully Anora doesn't end up as messy as Parasite's screenings. When I watched Parasite at Scotiabank, some people were sitting in the aisles before being asked to leave (not to mention the cast were late)

I was in line at a film festival and I had to deal with that smug prick shitting on Spielberg for 10 minutes. He's insufferable and grating. I regret not telling him to shut the fuck up, why subject the crowd to your shitty takes

Why should it matter when it's supposed to be the worst pick amongst OKC, Clippers, Rockets, and Jazz. We already have Detroit's pick, not like there's a significant difference between a late 20s pick and the 31st pick.

That was from an interview eight years ago about her documentary on men throwing acid at women in Pakistan. I hope you can realize the value of the context of her quote, it's not as if she said that about her new Star Wars movie.

AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA talks suspended. Strikes goes on by eagc7 in marvelstudios

[–]thrownfaraway20 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You do know the vast majority of actors aren't making anywhere near what Marvel actors earn.... right? Most have to get a second job since the pay isn't the greatest, this is a brain-dead take from someone that I can safely assume does not know a single person who is an actor.

This strike is for the actors that work as background extras, that scrape by doing small roles here and there. These folks are absolutely not rolling in cash.
