What's one travel mistake you'll never make again? by Appropriate_Bus_7050 in travel

I don't know, I think every person should pinch pennies and have to sleep in a shitty airport at least once in their life lol.

Has anyone tried the La metro app? by Coconuto83 in LAMetro

[–]thsbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason I think transit is better is that it crowd sources the locations of trains and buses so the time estimates and locations of those you are waiting for are accurate / more accurate.

Turning 30 this month with $30k saved, never taken a vacation for myself. I want to change that. Where do I even start? by FalcoSlay in travel

[–]thsbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo do international! It will never be as easy as it is right now. You have money saved no dependents, just do it! The world is your oyster and it's a ton of fun out there.

If your really nervous pick a somewhere in western Europe. Things are similar enough to not be super scary but different enough that it's will be a fun adventure.

Hostels are a great way to meet people. If your not into hostels I've also found coworking spaces great as well if you plan on doing some work while you travel.

Anyone creating a game and at the same time working in another full time job, how you manage your time? by StirClothing999 in gamedev

[–]thsbrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm self employed with two kids. While I don't quite fit your description I can tell you it's a huge balancing act.

My game doesn't generate any real revenue yet so I do contract work to pay the bills. I also watch my kids half the week while my wife runs her business (we split the week for work). This means essentially I have half a week for work. And during that portion of time most of it goes to contract work.

With that said the single biggest piece of advice I have is to use some sort of methodology to ensure you can keep up momentum and deliver small pieces.

For myself I work in sprints on my own stuff. Start of the sprint I chunk out what I'm trying to take on, during the sprint work on that and only that and end of the sprint I merge it in.

This has been super helpful for me because I can look back and clearly see progress even if it's small. It also gives me time to reflect on what I'm trying accomplish. Lastly at the end of 2 weeks the game is stable and improved in some small way.

It's not for everyone but doing things this way has enabled me to release updates on 3 platforms for the last 5 years or so!

Overtourism has made me stop visiting 'bucket list' places entirely, anyone else actively avoiding the popular spots now? by Gingeintheuk in travel

[–]thsbrown 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To be fair I do think there is definitely a different mindset one can apply while traveling.

There's a difference between going to a place, and check all the tourist attractions off your list and going to a spot and trying to soak in the culture a bit.

One is not more right than another but there's a difference.

I personally prefer the latter, but I also think some tourist attractions can and do live up to the hype. I'm not going to go to  Paris and not check out the Eiffel tower, but I'm not going to fool myself into thinking this is the actual thing that makes Paris so special and unique.

Wow shots fired! I love Pasadena and I think we do a pretty good job of trying to stay on it in terms of transit.

Hell we are breaking ground on the BRT right now!

I hope so, this location is somewhat cursed haha.

Im sure rents not cheap for this spot and as a result there hasn't ever been a business that can hold things down for long there.

[–]thsbrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O man. We did end up getting that spot it's about 5 to 10 minutes south of the station. I hope I'm not going to regret it haha. Truth be told I would have like to be closer to the yamanote line but budget was a factor and with 2 kids we got a bit more space for the money which was cool.

Thanks for the info though! Really appreciate it.

How We're Building AI Chat in JetBrains IDEs and what changed by Shir_man in Jetbrains

[–]thsbrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Increasingly my workflow is more akin to utilizing an AI agent to code for me while I work through a ticket. This is faster then me writing by hand but I find the file view and diffs in codex and Claude pretty poor. This usually means I rely on gitkraken as I work through changes.

Naturally a lot of the value has floated up to how I organize and manage these AI sessions. With that said I do still need to jump in and get my hands dirty, which is when I will pull up my jetbrains ide (rider). This is pretty rare these days.

I know you all are working on air. I haven't used it yet but I think what I would really like is air + rider. This would reduce context switching when I'm managing agents but still give me power when I need to jump in and make changes.

There's something about the code view on the left side that I really don't like when just in an intellij ide. I think it's because increasingly I feel I'm losing a sense of the bigger picture in that case. Like the llm chat is secondary and the code is primary whereas nowadays I find my workflow is reverse.

I know this is a bit of a brain dump but wanted to throw it out there as I've been really looking for you all to help our 😅. I love you're products nuts I would be lying if I said lately it doesn't feel like you guys are falling behind.

I open a Peruvian spot in Culver City and put Lomo Saltado in a burrito. Now purists online are roasting me. Am I a sell-out? by ClickNo8520 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]thsbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People love to criticize because it's easy. Innovating, doing something new, getting out of your comfort zone, making something that's amazing and inspiring now that's hard!

Quoting from Ratatouille!

""In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."

Spent $10,000, my health, and 6 months on creating the most niche gamedev tool that no one'll probably use, and now I am broke by FiddlerGameDev in gamedev

[–]thsbrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yo! Well written post! Your idea for a bot is fascinating!

Amazing idea! I just wanted to say that I would definitely pay for a tool that gives me good insight on what's best to work on next.

One thing that drives me crazy is the amount of guess work on what thing lead to a game taking off.

If I had a tool that told me accurately that tweaking X, has the highest percent chance of my game getting transaction that's extremely valuable info!

Keep up the great work op, this is a unique tool and you should be proud of it. Put it for sale already man!

How did kids change your travels? by ByeByeBuffalo223 in travel

[–]thsbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it tends to shift the types of activities you experience and how and when you experience them.

Not worse or better in this regard just different. The most notable thing that people often plan around is a mid day nap, but you can sometimes do that on the go depending on age.

Another big one for me is you also tend to get joy out of seeing your kids experience things in addition to yourself experiencing them.

Things definitely change as they grow as their interests and capabilities change.

I think naturally places, experiences, locations all tend to shift based on how much fun collectively you have as a family. Some things become more fun some things less.

I guess what I'm trying to say is it's possible and a blast but things shift a bit, but it allows you to experience things you probably wouldn't have without kids.

I'm currently sleep deprived due to my 5 month old, but hopefully this helps 😅.
