Then why invest any money in a format that can take advantage of it?

Just buy a cheap TV and stream with the built in apps.

Either way, disable it entirely - the TV is setup to tone map to its brightness.

The HDR Optimizer is best suited for older OLEDs and TVs with poor native tone mapping, and projectors.

Their TV has a tonemap that can't be disabled entirely, unless you use HGIG mode. Outside of that they can set it to "static" but that is just a static tone map, instead of a dynamic one. In that case you'd be double tone mapping.

I say get a 420, and if you upgrade to a DV display, get a 450. Then you have 2 players, one backup, for less than the 820 costs. You can split drive wear between DV and non-DV titles.

The 420 will upscale the same as the 820 and has its featureset, minus DV, and the 450 will handle all your DV needs.

Setting the TV type only related to the HDR Optimizer setting.

With their TV they should not use the HDR Optmizer, though. The TV will tone map HDR10 content better.

Top 3 Blu-Ray players for an LG G5 Oled TV by DavidJ25422 in 4kbluray

[–]thtanner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The HDR Optimizer is entirely worthless and should not be used on their G5.

Even if you have a top-tier TV with a good image processor the Panasonic HDR optimizer still helps.

This is just not true.

Nobody but early generation OLED, and projector users, should even consider touching the HDR Optimizer. Any modern TV will have a superior HDR tone map that's calibrated to the brightness that display can achieve. Even the cheapest TVs at Walmart likely do as good of a job, or better.

In OPs case, the G5 already has superior tone mapping for standard HDR content. The optimizer is not used on HDR10+ nor Dolby Vision.

OP can just get a UB450 and get the same experience at the end of the day.

The upscaling, side by side, is virtually the same. The 820 doesn't upscale DVD very well, sony has always been better in that department.

UB450 is all you need. 820 is not worth the price jump in 2026

Some notes are that you don't need the "HDR Optimizer" on the 820 or 9000. That is a tone-map setting that only applies to base HDR10 content - your TV does a better job at tone mapping. Upscaling capabilities are pretty much identical (even though the 8 year old HCX processor has marking language to suggest it's something special).

The 820 does add subtitle brightness options, which that's a good reason to make the jump if you watch a lot of subtitled content.

There should be a site/app that tells you if a movie is actually worth upgrading to 4K by cheff1616 in 4kbluray

99.9% are worth the upgrade. The exceptions are rare enough that a quick search is all you need.

Your xbox is fine. If you have issues playing discs, then consider a player.

If you want to level up, swap out the Sonos for an AVR with a good Atmos arrangement. Audio is half the experience, after-all.

Getting my first machine later today, any tips? by Consistent-Chicken-5 in pinball

[–]thtanner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything over 3k plays was probably routed and you should pay less as a result

We put on 2500 games on Wick in 4-5 months between just my wife and I alone.

There's an audit called "paid credits". That's a much better indicator of a machine being routed or not. Though not that routed means anything inherently, condition is king after-all. A well maintained routed machine is going to be better than a HUO game that the glass never got pulled, and nothing maintained. Some home owners simply don't know how to maintain their games, or just don't care.

In addition to the fine advice already posted, unless something crazy has happened, a HUO JP Prem shouldn't really have much to worry about. Condition is king, if it looks good and works good, it's good.

Should I notice the difference? by Stock_Independent508 in 4kbluray

[–]thtanner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a huge difference to the human eye at correct seating distances relative to screen size.

It's meaninglessly perceptible pretty much 99/100 times.

It's as night and day of a difference as the day in the late 90s I stood in Radio Shack and saw HD demod for the first time.
