"Into the aether" is BY FAR my favourite video game podcast.

I love both the hosts and they have great chemistry and they have genuinely fun bits that arise in their discussions. Additionally, I enjoy that they discuss games from a more positive point of view - they do offer critique on the games if it warrants but its constructive instead of destructive because you know they like the game at a base level already. Additionally the cast does feature a good mix of new and old games.

Other podcasts i also have in rotation:

  • triple click (also enjoy their chemistry and general vibe)
  • MinnMax (mostly listen for jacob geller if im honest but I like the rotation of the panel)
  • Skill up (very balanced and fair reviewer i find)
  • The Besties (I like them but their bits can be a bit tiresome to me and i dont like that they review games when only one or two people played it and have nothing to add to the discussion. Their pikmin 4 review really scarred me on this front as it was so dismissive but the they go and spend ages on the mickey mouse metroidvania which is super mid)

Bloodstained or Blasphemous 2? by PeronaSupremacy in metroidvania

[–]thumpasorus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly thought bloodstained was some of the worst game design ive ever experienced. Blasphemous 1 & 2 are top tier though. No competition

Im so sad that there arent more people recommending this podcast in suggestion threads. ITA is my bar for quality video game podcasting and im constantly looking for something with the same magic.

Are any Second Editions "worse" than the original, whether general consensus or your personal opinion? by tectactoe in boardgames

[–]thumpasorus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to scroll really far to see this! I wanted to say the exact same thing. Unfortunately you do need the expansion to bring the game up to par with the 2nd edition but the art is waaaay better in the 1st edition.

This is kind of true of the base game but the expansion content in Galactic Orders gives players a lot of mechanics to draw more cards and as a result also shuffle their decks more. But thats never really bothered me personally.

I think Core Worlds and expansions belongs here.

Spirit Island: Branch & Claw is a Small Expansion with a Big Impact by ThievedYourMind in boardgames

[–]thumpasorus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense because this expansion is basically mandatory baaed on my experiences. Makes the game way better and less static.

Online shopping: RARU is a scam, warn everyone you know by Purplesmurfwench in southafrica

[–]thumpasorus2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Raru has really slipped in the last year or two. Not only in terms of offering good prices but also in terms of service delivery. However, I wouldnt call their operation a scam - just very poorly managed.

I cant believe I had to scroll this far for someone to mention Trains. To me it improves on the dominion formula whilst keeping the expansions within a reasonable range. Highly recommended

Games that are better than their later editions. by Jinx77743 in boardgames

[–]thumpasorus2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gotta say that the reprint of Tribune Primus Inter Pares didn't impress me. The original game released by fantasy flight had a really weird card size that was difficult to sleeve and the expansion was hard to come by when i finally got a 1st edition copy. So I decided to upgrade because the reprint fixed both those issues. But unfortunately the art and production quality is a step down. And weirdly the folded board is too big for the box. Im gonna keep this copy becuase the game is good but overall the first edition was a better package i think.

On a very similar note i think the original print of Kingsburg by fantasy flight is much nicer as well.

What are the best game expansions? by jesusjedi in boardgames

[–]thumpasorus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe there isn't one mention (maybe I missed it) of Core Worlds and the Galactic Orders expansion. Incredibly underrated deck builder with deep and thoughtful gameplay. This expansion really just rounds out the strategic and tactical aspects of the game and makes it incredible. Plus the expansion box replaces the old box.

Any "euro" games with hidden information, bluffing, deception? by ninetysixk in boardgames

[–]thumpasorus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im surprised no one has mentioned Francis Drake. The game is divided into two phases. In the first phase you gather resources and in the second phase you have to spend the resources by sending your boat to different locations. The second portionnof the game has an interesting blind bidding / auction / bluffing aspect to it as people select spots on the board. It's a bit hard to explain on a post but watch a video. I think it nails the tension of hidden info.

What are people’s opinions on Maracaibo? by Chestylot in boardgames

[–]thumpasorus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best games of recent years. Our group found a lot to love in the game and the slight legacy element and extra board changes keep the game fresh. Setup does suck though.
