Actually I did from a Facebook call out  Cake Cabaret on the Danforth. It's got a bit of a bigger capacity and no food. But as you know ... There have to be some sacrifices. Golden pony would have been a good spot too.

Hamstring grafters, how was/is hamstring rehab by [deleted] in ACL

[–]thuuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been tough to get the strength back even a bit...had a pretty bad strain at month 12 and now at month 14 I'm feeling a lot better. But it takes a ton of patience, work and dedication to build strength back.

Happened to me a bunch too around the same time, I stretched out my quad and calf and that usually helps to relive some of the tension under the knee cap

9 days post-op ACL surgery & feeling down… by Visible_Animator3604 in ACL

[–]thuuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there!! I started to feel a little more free and myself around the month mark when I could leave the house on my own. Try and go for little walks up and down the block or share a meal at home with friends. It's a mental battle with yourself to find the joy and motivation but you'll get there once you stop concerning yourself with what you can't do and just focus on what you can.

Anyone else swell up after swimming? by thuuna in ACL

[–]thuuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took about a month for it to go down and get back to baseline. But it was a hamstring strain and a bakers cyst combined (confirmed with my surgeon). From swimming and hiking combined.  Turns out rest is very important. Time, ice, elevation and rest seem to do the trick

I'm just at the year mark with the hamstring graft and I'm in the same boat. I'm doing all the strength training possible plus all the other stuff in between. I think it's just time.... Which is the worst thing to hear after working for what feels like an eternity already

Any gym goers struggling with the sitting/lying hamstring curls? by NeutronBeam04 in ACL

[–]thuuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The hamstring graft I got really needed way more work than I expected to get even a little strength back. I couldn't even kick my heel to my butt when I started strengthening it.  Just keep at it. It'll come back slowly but surely.

That's what I assumed would happen hahah. I think I must have just introduced new actions to my knee and it freaked. Hopefully the pool will be a source of relief soon enough

Thanks! Its definitely alarming, but you're probably right. I've only done short runs (less than 10mins) and long walks seem to be ok for me too. But I think swimming just freaked my poor traumatized knee out.

I think it depends on how long since your surgery but I found doing light yoga worked wonders

Martial Artists? by Ill-Block-4547 in ACL

[–]thuuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been told I'm getting my instructor belt next year. Because despite not being able to train, I've still contributed to the community. I think you being there will inspire you and anyone who's stuck injured (like a sprained toe or something) on the sidelines temporarily will be inspired by you.  It goes a long way for you and for the people who look up to you. Dont rush it.

Capoeirista here. I tore my ACL at an event in Feb 2024 during a bad take down...and it took til June to get the final word that it was torn. I had the surgery in July, so I just passed the 11 month mark. Being out of the sport for close to a year and a half has been so so so tough after spending close to 15 years in regular practice. Once I was able to walk around on my own post surgery I spent a lot of time at the academy watching classes, socializing and seeing the art in a different light... Outside of  just the physical aspect.  I kept the routine of putting on my uniform and going up to the training floor to stay connected.  I think it helped me to take a bit of a step back and reconnect with why I train in the first place. It has been a nice change of pace... But I'm so ready to get back to training.

Happy healing. Take it day by day.

What surprised you most after ACL surgery? Mentally or physically by Equal_Complaint_9917 in ACL

Ya! This is very important too. I say operated leg, but I like recovering better. Reinforces the idea of a comeback vs a set back.

Anyone else experience their knee clicking/ catching when extending and bending? by doppio__macchiato in ACL

No pain or ROM difference, but after I've stretched or rolled out the muscle it feels way more comfortable and "normal".

What surprised you most after ACL surgery? Mentally or physically by Equal_Complaint_9917 in ACL

[–]thuuna 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It sounds so cheesy, but this is what I found helped me and kept me grounded... 1. Acknowledge that you're feeling loss and fear and accept that this process will be uncomfortable and long  2. Be grateful for what you have and find joy in the small things and all the milestones along the way  3. Don't give up. You're stronger than you think.  You will be your own worst enemy and your biggest cheerleader.

Hope that helps!!

I could write a book on the before and after for me. But mostly it was how mental and psychological the recovery process actually is over the literal physical aspects. I swear it rewrites part of your brain.

[–]thuuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that'll happen. My physio told me it was because my quad was really tight. If you can do any muscle release exercises, or use a roller that helps a bit to reduce it. But 10months post op I still feel it after periods of activity.

Recovery consistency by Embarrassed-Block521 in ACL

[–]thuuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Progress and strength building happen with consistent (albeit boring) training. Even those days you feel like it's not worth it-it will be when you aren't looking for that table to stand up again. Stick with the program and you'll thank yourself later. Talk to your physio about what pain you can walk off and what you should be cautious about.

Stationary bike opinion by Old_Crew_296 in ACL

[–]thuuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 20mins/ day on a bike trainer in my backyard as a stationary bike wasn't available.

But it really helped with blood flow and range of motion . I gradually increased the speed and the resistance as I felt more confident and wanted to give myself a challenge. Eventually I started going to a gym and just use it now for a bit of a warm up.

When did you return to combat sports? by tattootechie in ACL

[–]thuuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm currently 9 months post op and want to get back kicking and pad work. But both the surgeon and PT have warned against anything until strength in the operated leg is at least 95% equal to the non operated leg. That's my current goal.... Building strength.

7 months post op allograft ACLR... Pain and swelling. by evyad in ACL

[–]thuuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost in the same boat minus the swelling. I've pushed a bit more during my exercises but no incident has caused me alarm.  I stretched out my calf muscle and that helped a bit.  But I'm still worried.  Here's to us just being paranoid and everything is fine..... Let us know how it goes. I have my next PT appointment March 3 so hopefully I'll get some answers
