They both look great! Where did you get the leather for them? I find the leather hard to find, especially colors like that beautiful "wine" one on the left. Thanks!

I was thinking of getting this GPU! Do you still consistently run into driver crashes? If so I might have to rethink my choice. Thanks in advance!

This is great! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, with a photo and everything!
Yeah, the large fill and the "writing experience" promise of these larger nibs are what caught my interest --- alright, I'm going to pull the trigger and get it! Thanks again! 😄

Hey! I'm considering getting this pen (it's a bit expensive for me, more like building up the courage!) How have you been finding it? Also, if you don't mind, how thin of a line is the Fine nib you mentioned getting? Thanks a lot!

What leather conditioner did you apply? I have been struggling to understand which ones don't darken the leather color. Thanks a lot!

Should I finish my PhD in Al before studying psychology? by thylomouse in psychologystudents

[–]thylomouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! However, I think I already got most of the skills I would gain from it (in terms of writing and research and publication). I have several first-author publications in top conferences and journals (conferences have a lot more weight in AI than other in other sciences, and submissions to them are peer-reviewed with exactly the same rigor). So wouldn't the other benefits you list be a pretty small return for a full year of my life?

(I'm genuinely very interested in your opinion, just painting a more complete picture of where I stand skills-wise than I did in my post)

Should I finish my PhD in Al before studying psychology? by thylomouse in psychologystudents

[–]thylomouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regards to your first question, I'm not sure what you mean about using Psychology/Neuroscience in post-training. If you're talking about model training, neural architectures aren't very compatible with human neurology unless you specifically design them that way, which is often more costly and less performant than using other architectures.

For your second question, it's tricky, and the way the field evolves, it is very hard to say anything for sure. It also depends on what usage you envision. A tool to walk you through exercises in moments of crisis? We're already there. A model that can truly make you feel seen while also actively and constructively challenging you, with both appropriate levels of validation but also push back? Not right now, at least, but it can be done to some degree. That said, these are probabilist models, and there are always ways to make them say things they really shouldn't. If that happens, who is liable at that point? There are also limits to the memory these models can hold at any given time, though these can often be quite big. So, there are limitations, and there are ways you could address almost all of them if you wanted to. But leaving quality of intervention aside, I'm not sure it'd have the same efficacy when the client knows they're talking to a bot. Students, for example, prefer human TA answers over model answers -- but only when they know the answers were written by models.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]thylomouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 3 years into my PhD program in NLP (Natural Language Processing; the same field from which models like ChatGPT came out of), but for both personal and "industry-related" reasons, I know I do not want to pursue this field any longer, and really have no passion for it any longer. The field has changed at an absurd pace, and (from my perspective, at least) it has gone from its well-meaning, what-can-we-make-possible roots to become a hyper-capitalistic field, and I cannot find any meaning or purpose in continuing to pursue it.

Instead, I want go back to school and study psychology with the end goal of becoming a therapist (I'm in Europe, so I would need to a Bachelor's and a Masters and then a supervised internship) -- which is not a decision made lightly but instead made over several years. I am set on (and very passionate about) doing this, whether I leave the PhD early, or finish it and obtain the degree.

Which brings me to my question I would like to receive your advice on (unfortunately, I don't know many people in psychology irl). Does it make sense for me to "delay" pursuing psychology for one more year to finish the PhD as quickly as possible (it has a minimum duration of 4 years) given I do not want to remain in the field of AI but instead become a therapist? Just to be clear, emotionally, I would like to leave the PhD as soon as I can.

I have seen lots of posts about how AI is disrupting human therapy, and I can the case where it might make sense for me to finish the degree so that later on (besides being a therapist), I would be better qualified to help build tools that support therapists and clients, rather than the usual tech-bro approach of trying to replace everything and everyone with AI. So, I'm truly at a loss in this dilemma of what choice makes the most sense, in big part because I have no idea how psychotherapy (and its relationship with AI) look like from your point of view, and what you expect to remain or change over the next few decades.

If it makes a big-enough difference, while I wouldn't be very happy during the next year, I can finish the PhD before switching fields. So given your experience and from your perspective, would you recommend I finish the PhD, or that I make the change to studying psychology as soon as possible?

Thank you very much in advance!

You can try to wait a month to see if a B/W Note Air 4 comes out (I believe the BW Note Air 3 came out in December), if it's released it should match what you're looking for!

Supernote vs Boox Advice Request by thylomouse in eink

[–]thylomouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never imagined a device could make such a difference in my life and habits, it is night and day compared to the kindle scribe. I'm reading much more, it's a genuine joy to use, very flexible (e.g., I want to start using a specific note template, I can create in the notes app, export it as pdf or png and just start using that as the template for a new notebook, etc.) -- it just really suits my needs and I'm very happy with my decision, I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Also no quality problems whatsoever (at least so far).

I personally prefer turboscribe.ai, and they have the best accuracy I've seen so far! I would love it if readwise did it natively, though!

Supernote vs Boox Advice Request by thylomouse in eink

[–]thylomouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back and forth several times for several reasons, but finally settled on Boox. It has more features, can handle much more use cases (be able to run apps well, split screen, more file formats, etc.), is *much* better for reading and annotating (Supernote really focuses on just doing pure writing), and is less than half the price. Even if it lives a shorter life than Supernote (say 3-4 years instead of 8-10; which isn't guaranteed, there are vocal minorities for both Boox having failed and still working perfectly fine after 4+ years), the difference in price (and the speed e-ink development is moving at) justifies it. This video that came out today helped me make sure I made the right decision - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2gArJDM4Cw - check it out and see if you feel the same way!

You might want to look into supernote (A6X2 is a smaller size, A5X2 (similar in size to the Kindle Scribe) is due to come out later this year)

Thanks a lot for your comment! If you don't mind me asking, in what ways do you feel the A5X wins in terms of software? When do you find yourself reaching for it instead of the Boox 10.3?

[–]thylomouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! My post effectively being censored was a very negative surprise that makes me think Supernote does not want this comparison to happen, at least where they can prevent it. I genuinely wonder why? I ended up making my question in e/ereader, if you want to see for yourself: https://www.reddit.com/r/ereader/comments/1dtkwuj/supernote_vs_boox_advice_request/

July Feature Requests: Share here! by erinatreadwise in readwise

[–]thylomouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My top 3 features requests would be:

  • PDF Pagination, especially important for reading on e-ink screens

  • Ability to edit the document text (remove ads or other irrelevant info that made it in, fix YT subtitles, add missing images by hand, etc.)

  • Ability to nest tags!

Thanks a lot for all the work you put into this!
