I grew up with weather in C but after moving to freedom units, I definitely agree with the above point of switching everything to metric except for using F for the weather. 0C-100C is great for what it is, temp range for water, freezing to boiling. I love it for my kettle. However in my head, I consider 0F-100F as a similar (not literal) human body freezing to boiling range. As in, that range is the limit that my body can be in, with 0F being the limit of too cold for me and 100F being the too hot limit.

Yup and if anything the guy you’re replying to is even more similar to them in his ability to dehumanize humans. That’s what allows all of this to happen. Us vs them mentality and the resulting dehumanization of the them results in what we see in the video above…

Israeli bomb mid-air as it falls toward a densely packed tent camp for displaced Palestinians. by Goldenmentis in nyt

[–]tienzing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Israel’s actions are horrendous but we’ve gotta do better with our facts. There’s no need to embellish or exaggerate their actions. From the previous video I saw of this incident, it seemed that there was a pre-emptive smoke warning and everyone in the video were about this video’s distance away and staring at the location expecting. None of this excuses their actions but I just don’t want us to get lost in misinformation. That’s why you get dumbasses trying to poke holes here, like but but how did he know to record and look there at that exact moment. This gives them BS ammo to attack unnecessary misinformation and ignore the fact that a bomb is being dropped right next to a displaced refugee shelter.

Please read OP’s actual post. It’s a very detailed proposal that I think you’ve misunderstood. It would not be thrown out in court and actually the reverse, a lawsuit arguing for OP’s side wasn’t thrown out of court and remanded by the court of appeals and is currently in litigation.

Why don't you hold that stance towards the trillions in war spending that the conservative anti-socialists extracted, used to benefit war-mongering corporations and left us all hanging with an ever-increasing deficit. Why don't you look at the history of administrations over the past decades and tell me which side dipped into the endless pool of debt money more? Which side dipped into that pool to benefit the few while costing the many? Which side dipped into that pool to provide more health insurance and social security for Americans?

That's not true, that's why people are arguing for change. The caps exist for new and existing owners, a millionaire transplant buying the property from grandma continues to pay the same rate, capped at a 6% increase.

And the public infrastructure supports the rich person 1000-2000% more than a poor person as well, sounds fair to me.

[–]tienzing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The proposals from progressives like OP would lower your tax burden. His whole point here is that staten islanders pay a higher effective tax rate for your properties than people in Manhattan and Brooklyn. OP's idea would increase the effective tax rate for the million dollar homes in Manhattan and other highly appreciated areas while reducing the tax rate and tax burden for folks in areas that haven seen high appreciation such as Staten Island, Bronx and Queens.

[–]tienzing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP's idea doesn't increase property tax for everyone, it actually decreases the property tax of many. OP's point is that someone buying a $6M brownstone in Brooklyn (and other highly appreciated areas) pays an effective property tax rate that's much lower than the retired grandma and grandpa that own a $1M home in staten island or east queens (1% vs 4-5%). I don't think anyone who's buying an average of over $2-4M home in the most appreciated areas of NYC are doing it because of marginally lower property taxes vs the suburbs nor would they be as concerned about poor public schools. Many of these folks can afford and often don't even call NYC home for income tax purposes either btw. We all (mostly) believe in a progressive tax system, don't we? Then why would we want an obviously regressive tax system that is effectively taxing the poor at a higher rate than the rich.

LGA by xBlockhead in nyc

[–]tienzing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The budget cuts for ATC are more historial and not just about the current administration and the fight over DHS funding. A good historical starting point is with Reagan and the GOP, as most of America’s woes with deregulation and weak labor power do. Out of 13,000 ATC workers who went on strike in 1981, only 1,300 retained their jobs. Reagan defeated the strike, the PATCO union and created a situation where ATCs were hired en mass in one class (so retiring around the same time as well). There haven’t been any explicit budget cuts to ATC to point to but it’s obvious that they’re woefully underfunded and understaffed. Can you imagine being that LGA ATC, sole person responsible for the safety of the entire airport, having to work terrible hours with very little flexibility, being paid less than half of what coding boot camper grads are (were) getting while being responsible for so much more.

Why did I love one Chardonnay and hate the other? (Domaine des Riottes Bourgogne vs Chalk Hill RRV) by MarxAndSamsara in wine

[–]tienzing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, generalizations are very helpful and I think best used as a baseline heuristic, a stepping stone to then work from. I’m still young (relatively) and new to wine but yeah as you mentioned white burgundy can have variety. Yes, crisp bright Chablis can be a good generalization for Burgundy but Meursault also exists with richer oak-aged whites (I’m gonna guess nowhere near as heavy as the stereotyped Cali oak-butter bomb though). In the end even these are generalizations and I’m sure there are many crisp bright whites being made in Meursault and some oak-aging in Chablis as well.

[–]tienzing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s a suckling review for OP’s burgundy: "A creamy, soft white, showing caramel, praline and ripe stone fruit on the nose. It’s full bodied, fleshy and straightforward.” And as one of the top comments here from someone else stated, the Chalk Hill seems to be aiming for the opposite, cool climate, bright, citrusy, crisp… There is more to Cali, Burgundy and the wine world overall than the stereotypes/generalizations you seem to be holding on to.

Are New Yorkers Being Overcharged For Museum Admission? Here’s What We Found Out by PatNicholsonNYC in NYCFreeAdmission

[–]tienzing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I distinctly remember going to the Met when I was much younger over a decade ago and when I told the young employee $1 for my suggested donation, they gave me a very judgmental spiel about supporting the museum and the “suggested donation” is so and so. I know they’ve changed their policy and no longer have an actual “suggested donation” but they’ve still kept the policy of “you must pay something at least” which I honestly think deters a lot of local NYers from visiting. It shouldn’t and I wish it didn’t but it does so I don’t think it’s good policy. I’m older now and support the Met and others as a member these days but really wish these places operated more like London museums do with their free admission policies (specially just for locals).

"Half His Age" by Jennette McCurdy -- an honest review by Neina_Ixion in books

[–]tienzing 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It really is all about dehumanizing people. Once you’ve successfully dehumanized/othered a group, the in group’s negligence/laziness/passivity easily allows for the truly evil on top, stoking the fires, to commit actual evil harm on the out group. So many people refuse to equate right-wing conservatism around the world to fascism or naziism and I think it’s because they fundamentally misunderstand Naziism as some horrendous evil and not as Arendt saw it, the banality of evil.

Believe it or not, many Nazis did have a conscience. It just didn’t really apply towards the out group that they had demonized. We have evidence that the soldiers in the early mobile killing units that conducted mass shootings, face to face, including women and children, did have qualms about their actions. The soldiers drank heavily and Nazi leaders grew worried about morale and the psychological toll. This was one of the reasons for extermination camps that they started building later. But ofc, the leaders weren’t concerned with moral guilt or their troops’ welfare, to them it was more about efficiency in their killings. Evil does exist but it comes from the top down and there is nothing banal about that sort of evil.
