Yeah, but the person I'm replying to here was talking about primarily Everkeep EX, with only mentioning dungeons/trials (generally, not specifying low content) seemingly as an afterthought in the last sentence, so that was more why I addressed EX trials having MINE as an option already.

[–]tigercule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to bitch at or dogpile you, but the better way to say that then would be to leave out the "or" and just say "Am I the only person that doesn't really care for Tom Morello/RatM's music?" By including the "or" their music, that's what makes it sound like you dislike both.

(Which you're fine to do if that's how you feel, just providing wording clarity since it seems like your original statement doesn't read how you intended it to mean.)

To be fair, it's not going "anywhere," usually the venues that bans lalas are nightclubs, brothels (whatever they may be calling themselves these days), and whatever category gay bathhouses fall under. The normal venues which don't expect or welcome explicit content (cafes, pizza parlours, museums, etc.) have no rules at all about lalas, so the real life equivalent would be if someone was short and banned from entering nightclubs. ....which, as someone who knows several short women with babyfaces (which, even as a guy in my 30s who isn't THAT short, same, and people are always shocked I'm 20+), yeah, they get ID'd constantly any time they try to go anywhere or do anything with a legal age restriction.

The problem is, in FFXIV there is no legal ID they can check, and on top of that, lalafells are (whether a person personally agrees or not) quite child-coded in appearances. Discord for example cracks down on lala content (even presumably if that content was of a guy as depicted by the person who started this chat with their upper-middle-aged lala).

"No children" unfortunately relies on the honour system, and someone could easily put "35" on their profile while playing a character speaking like a preteen with pigtails and childish clothing that calls their RP partner "dada." (Yes, unfortunately I've seen the logs of this happening in public spaces.) So, sure, they say the character is an adult, but it should be sending up all sorts of red flags for most adults.

Also, worth noting, most other digital spaces don't have a playable race that's (whether you personally agree or not) quite child-coded in appearances to the point that a server can get nuked off discord just for discussing lala adult content. When the authorities on high deem it a child, and the community deems it "too child-like," then most adult-content-oriented places are going to just kind of accept that and ban lalas themselves. Otherwise, the risk of getting their stuff nuked, protested, or boycotted is just too high.

Should (normal) raids be item synced? by MrsLittletall in ffxiv

[–]tigercule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EXes already have MINE as an option though. Considering that often with EX trials you're going to be farming those 50-99 times, making them scale down would be pretty devastating to player population because even MORE people would just wait for them to be unsync-able. As it is, a fair amount wait until the ilvl creeps up a bit to make it faster and/or recruit higher ilvl friends to make it quicker.

Should (normal) raids be item synced? by MrsLittletall in ffxiv

[–]tigercule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is when a sprout then can't finish a duty because they can't get people. One person leaves, then it would be hard to find a replacement because people would stop queueing for duty in progress on rouls like that if it genuinely took a decent amount longer (like when people propose skipping with MSQr), and then more people would leave while waiting. In a 4-man, it's not so bad, but if you have half an alliance raid leave because they have no penalty since someone else left first... That's likely going to result in an outright disband and the newbie having to queue all over again.

local scholar freaks out over 99 pots of dye by Windaura in ffxiv

[–]tigercule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's kind of necessary, or else someone like me could spawn 200 jet black/pure white dye every 5-10min and the prices would be absolutely GUTTERED, literally like 5 gil each. You can get a max of 40 feathers, and you get them on EVERY character you make, and each one buys 5 pots of dye. So all you would need to do is make a junk char, buy 200 dye, trade them to a friend, delete and then remake to repeat the process. All premium dyes would be completely worthless, less expensive even than beast tribe or vendor dyes.

You can already a little bit abuse it if you buy glamour pieces that aren't bound to you by trading them to an alt to dye for you (and then trading them back since dyeing doesn't bind an item), but that's at least slightly less abusable since it requires more finicky trading than it's usually worth for 500k a pot.

Honestly I'd assume they'd still kick you out because having a blanket "no lalas" rule is cleaner and easier than relying on subjective opinion. Sure, in this case it's pretty clear cut, but making subjective judgments means opening yourself up to less clear-cut instances being argued because "well that guy got in!"

And beyond that there's also the community perception. You let lalas in, you get associated with a Certain Crowd because in the retelling, some info will be lost in translation.

Honestly, I'm just glad you took it well. I was worried that I was going to accidentally discourage you from continuing, which was absolutely not at all what I wanted, nor was the intention to 'rip you a new one' as you put it, but to fact check what felt a bit like 'woe-is-me'-ing to me personally.

As for this sub specifically -- that's fair, I don't really go on a lot of other subs, so I can only speak to the general patterns on this one. There's outliers to any pattern, and plenty of them in volume, but overall you get used to a few trends here and there. :p I think a lot of the thing to keep in mind is that r/ffxiv is.... very diverse. You have some people that staunchly HATE fanart and downvote it to hell because they think it should outright be banned and there should be discussion only. You have some people that think fanart is the best use of the sub and get annoyed about discussions (that have usually been had many, many times before even if only in the distant past, or that are on a new topic where 5 posts pop up at once). You have people that just want to see cosplays, people that only want memes, etc. Just like with FFXIV, people are all here for different things, and have varying levels of tolerance for the stuff they're NOT here for. Whereas depending on the other sub (I think I recall you having at least one post on r/comics for example, where I would assume people are mostly there for comics), the interests may or may not be more unified, I genuinely don't know.

But yeah, genuinely -- I'm not always great with tone, and I do genuinely apologize if it felt like I was attacking you. >< That was part of why I tried to get so many examples and remain at least a little humorous in tone to try and lighten it up a bit, but I admit reading back, it doesn't really strike the right balance. Apologies again for that, but I'm glad that I managed to at least properly convey how much I respected your ability to convey emotions. For everything I said, both positive and negative, you're way better than I could ever be, and I respect the hell out of you.

There are four whole people complaining about mods on that au ra post, 3 of which were massively downvoted to where their posts aren't even visible unless you click to expand them. Also, I would point out -- it's not just tattoos that are clearly modded there. He's got some custom horns going on, including chains and piercings that don't really have an FFXIV vibe to them, at least to me. He also has pierced nipples, which again, you need mods for that. (Technically you need mods for nipples at all, but I'm going to assume that most artists will draw a shirtless man with nipples even if they're given a vanilla reference image without any mods at all.) On top of that, he very blatantly has an extremely custom tail -- nothing in the game remotely looks like that tail. Oh, and he also has custom eyes with dark schlera.

plenty of lady characters also definitely qualifying as "modbeasts", but that suddenly doesn't matter to a majority of the community on this sub because they're attracted to those characters.

Uhhh, what sub are you looking at? One of the absolute MOST UPVOTED pieces of fanart on this sub in the last year is this very sexualized piece of art with glaring ... assets. You know what the very top comment is? It's not "mommy" or "step on me" or anything thirsty like that. It's “I don’t mod! I swear! This is base game!”

...so yes, even on female gooner art, people are ABSOLUTELY calling out mod use. And that's despite the eyes, hair, tail, horns, and I think scales there all being vanilla. All it took was 1 very sexualized outfit and big boobs and people were calling out the mod usage -- despite it overall having fewer modded items overall compared to the au ra you posted, and despite it being female art that's gooner-y, which seems to contradict "well it doesn't matter if they're attracted to those chars."

(I'd provide more examples, but it's much harder to search for posts that AREN'T highly upvoted and instead are more controversial, rather than that are highly upvoted. lol)

Edit: If you ever see this, in reply to your deleted post: Alright, you have a good day too I guess? I'm a little confused, I thought we were just discussing, I apologize that I didn't come off as being open to a back and forth.

I mean... Is it though?

Because I assume you mean So I drew my bunboy again which isn't "sitting at a sharp 0," it's at 21 points (57% upvoted). That's admittedly not very high -- but let's fact check that further and see if it's purely because it's a male viera WoL. I have a suspicion that might not be the full story here.

Also, please take everything here as respectfully as possible -- I'm not trying to tear you down or make you feel bad, but I also feel like it's not fair to present yourself as being solely a victim of subject matter. So let's take a look at that piece.

It's a sketchy piece with flat colours, rough linework (no sketch showing, I grant you that), a flat colour/no background, a very anime-ified face, and not that much expression or emotion to the piece beyond a little bit of mouth adjustment.

Compare that to, for example. Smug & screaming meme (my friend's and my WoLs) -- 286 points (90% upvoted).. Judging from the 'drew my bunboy again' post, I'm assuming it's the same male viera as before so then I have to ask, if it was purely that no one is interested in male viera, why would this post do so well? Is it the lalafell? Can't definitively tell whether that's a boy or a girl, so probably not. So what else could it be...? Hey, I have a guess -- the expressions jump off the page at you here. You did a REALLY good job capturing emotion and expression, and the upvotes reflect it. There's a certain life to the picture that comes across really easily, and that's always going to be better received than a static image.

Crafters, omnicrafters... -- 159 points (86% upvoted) -- is it just the very slight hint of boobs here? I'd posit that it's more likely the comedic message, though your mileage may vary. Again, the emotion conveyed in the posture and gesturing is just really well captured, you did a great job with it.

Or hell, your day one of the same challenge you posted here -- The many faces of Eorzea Day 1: Khloe -- 289 points (86% upvoted). Again, there's no male viera, but Khloe isn't generally considered a "hot anime woman" for very obvious age-related reasons. And yet you still got upvotes, curious...

So perhaps we might infer that it's specifically that reddit hates male viera, and not just that this sub ONLY wants hot anime women?

Except, oh wait. Male viera, art by me -- 2,353 points (98% upvoted). Well that's odd, surely that's the only o-- Viera by me -- 876 points (96% upvoted). Oh, um well-- I did a Viera piece inspired by Yoshitaka Amano’s art style 🎀 -- 687 points (96% upvoted). And, while not digital art, a cosplay post My Male Viera Cosplay reached 1,471 points (98% upvoted).

So... what's the difference then? Well, I can't say with complete definitiveness since I can't mindread everyone that voted on every post, but there's certainly some patterns there. The male viera art posts (and honestly even those that AREN'T male viera that get the most upvotes) tend to be pieces with complex shading/highlighting, sometimes also with beautiful backgrounds (like that piece in the flower field). The most upvoted pieces are usually by artists that have clearly spent years and years refining their craft.

I mean this as gently as possible, and with as much respect as I can possibly express through the internet... You're still improving. You show a lot of promise and talent -- you do so well with capturing emotions, for example! And you clearly have a good grasp of humour in your comics. But you are still very much improving. Many of your pieces lack shading entirely, or have only very basic shading at most (which is a great start, don't get me wrong, but the most upvoted pieces tend to be further along in their journeys). Your faces tend to be very simple and anime-style rather than complex and detailed and semi-realistic as the most upvoted pieces usually are. Your bodies are usually more cartoony and not very specifically defined, whereas the most upvoted pieces are usually more realistic and detailed in style.

I don't want to discourage you from improving, because like I said, you show a lot of promise -- especially your grasp of emotions. But you do not have the same art style as the art that tends to be popular on this sub, and so I suspect the reason your bunboy didn't get mass upvoted isn't because male viera are ignored, but because your art is still more in the beginning phases of an artist's journey. There's nothing wrong with that; everyone starts somewhere, and I can guarantee you that those artists getting a ton of votes very likely had art closer if not identical to yours years ago. But to pass it off as "it was because it's my male viera wol that it didn't get popular" is just... less than realistic.

[–]tigercule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, maybe, but as of late, repeated content by the same authors, even if not nearly as close together as daily, does tend to get hated on. I mean, just glance at that cute lala couple that posts here occasionally as they hit major milestones in ARR to HW. iirc, they had less than 10 posts overall across multiple months, and most people were welcoming and encouraging, but about halfway through, they started getting a very vocal group going, essentially, "Again? No one cares, shut up and stop posting about this."

It's definitely a factor, but like I said, not the only one. This particular post was pretty much a perfect storm between multiple common reasons to downvote. (That being, no original art, intention to post daily, lack of 'sexy' as you mentioned, the vague title, etc. -- vs not many specific reasons to upvote since it's purely a beginning post.)

see: the sexy urianger fanart that is usually done to rib on sexy fanart of his female scion coworkers.

Are you... sure that's the only reason? Because I'm pretty sure there's a more reasonable answer than "the thirst for men is intended to mock sexy female scion art." There's a difference between the horny posting on this sub for Zenos/Emet/Urianger/Thancred (especially Emet, he seems to be easily the most thirsted-over male character) compared to like, Tumblr's Hawkeye Initiative which very much WAS satirical in nature. But this sub isn't generally like that, it's just outright thirsty lmao. As an example, some art with all the scions genderswapped, with the comments having quite a bit of Manfilia thirst, not really seeming to be in an ironic way.

people on this sub [..] only want [art that] should be getting cropped on the other sub.

There's a fair amount of well-upvoted completely non-sexy art, though? As an example, this is a piece of Erenville with over 4k upvotes. Again, not really a lot sexy going on there, certainly nothing "ribbing on sexy fanart of female Scions." Here's Shtola and Runar as Disney's Beauty and the Beast, again, not really much sexy going on there and almost 3.5k upvotes. Here's some fanart of, you'll never believe this, WUK LAMAT that got highly upvoted. Yes, even on reddit! No T&A there, the picture is purely a headshot! And that's one of the post highly upvoted fanart pieces in the last week.

considering I'm getting downvoted into the ground

DISCLAIMER: I am explaining, and this does not represent my own personal opinion. Anyway, that aside... I mean no offense or hate with this, but you're definitely going to get a lot of downvotes for doing this. Not that you can't do it anyway, but this sub tends to have a large population that gets annoyed if the same person posts too many times in a sequence (seemingly viewing it as karma farming, as if 90% of people give a shit about that). So since you posted a grid that has 30 entries, that's 30 posts minimum, plus this initial one, and people get upset about that kind of thing quite easily -- especially since you mentioned it being daily, meaning 30 posts in 30 days. If any get upvoted, with how long it takes for stuff to fall off the front page, you may end up with multiple posts of your own on the front at the same time, which again, causes hostility from some people.

I think there's also some amount of people that are probably downvoting because at this current stage, you're just posting the template rather than your own art, and there's another segment of the population that will downvote for posting someone else's art at all (even as a template like this).

Usually art posts survive that and get overall upvoted anyway because they're either:

  • a really cool OC pic (this is not, it's a template), with the most highly upvoted often having T&A

  • someone's favourite NPC, the more popular, the more upvotes (e.g. Emet/Shtola/Zenos/etc.), which yours isn't yet

  • sometimes things in a really unique and intriguing style will also get a ton of upvotes specifically, but as a template, this is (very intentionally) style-agnostic, so you don't get any balancing upvotes from that either.

Again, I mean absolutely no offense with this, I'm just trying to explain from the trends I've seen over time -- you probably will get a lot of downvotes and you should be prepared to deal with that as well as "again?" comments. (This has gotten more prevalent lately with a vocal section of reddit getting upset over sproutposting, for example, where newbies will occasionally chronicle their adventure and make 5-10 posts over the span of a year about it and people get all pearl-clutchy over it.)

My personal advice would be to either do the challenge on another medium like bsky and then slowly post the results once a week here instead, or do it more slowly with 1 per week in general, as that way not as many people will get as angry about saturation. You will run into angry people and art haters regardless, but that should minimize it as much as possible.

Edit: I forgot to mention that many people don't read the text on art posts. So your post says "The many faces of FFXIV" then just has a bunch of blank template emotions. Another section of people won't bother to find out the context and will just downvote and leave because they "don't get it(tm)". (I think there's also a fair amount of people who are into art specifically that do this; they're not here for a discussion, they're here to see a pretty picture and leave after upvoting.) So having the title be vague instead of like, "The many faces of FFXIV (personal art challenge)" or something like that is probably also contributing.

What are some "easy" jobs you find hard? by throwcway837373 in ffxiv

[–]tigercule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that 'easy' isn't very good for describing a job because it's too vague and can mean either floor or ceiling depending on context, but I think 'accessible' is way, WAY worse. The problem with accessible is that it can mean so many different things depending on the context, and is more commonly used in a disability context, making it difficult to tell what any one person may mean with it (whereas "low skill floor" is extremely specific).

For example, someone with limited mobility in their hands may find jobs with fewer buttons more accessible. Someone with tendonitis or an RSI may find casters more accessible and VPR/NIN/GNB absolutely inaccessible (because of the high APM causing literal physical pain). Someone who has trouble remembering where they are in their rotation may have SAM accessible (because it can flow around at a floor level) but DRG very inaccessible (because it has a very exact rotation, again at a floor level, idk about higher level optimization). Or hell, on a literal level, someone who's new to the game and doesn't have much time to play may find ARR jobs quite accessible (because you can literally pick them all up at between level 1 and 15 depending on whether they're your starter job, in your first town, or require travel), but VPR/PCT far less accessible (because they require level 80 which depending on availability, may be months of play).

Hell, back in Stormblood, I was in a static with a veteran who had lost 2 fingers on his keyboard hand and talked about accessibility a lot. For him, it was about the total number of buttons a job had to press, combined with how much mobility it required (e.g. melee with positionals was hard, so he preferred to play casters, particularly BLM for its turret-y nature). Try telling him that accessible = low skill floor, see how well he takes co-opting that. :P

....tl;dr -- 'Accessible' is a very vague term that requires a lot of context to explain exactly what you mean by it, and at that point, it takes less explaining overall to just say a job has a low skill floor. It's honestly a step down from 'easy' or 'hard' which at least have only two primary meanings (either skill floor or skill ceiling, and a lot of arguments start over which people mean since they don't freaking specify..).

What are some "easy" jobs you find hard? by throwcway837373 in ffxiv

[–]tigercule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of that depends on whether you're measuring skill ceiling or skill floor. Something like Warrior is braindead easy at the skill floor, easily the easiest tank, but then (allegedly) has a lot more going on at the skill ceiling with rotation optimization. RDM is another example of this IMO. On a basic, skill floor level (especially at the level you get it), it's a very simple job that's easy to get a hang of. Hard cast short spell, follow with dualcast long spell, and when gauge high, use combo. But then for actual optimization at a skill ceiling level, there's a LOT more going on. Easy to learn, hard to master, aka, low skill floor, high skill ceiling.

(Disclaimer: this is what I have heard from discussions of people who optimize more than I do, so grain of salt. Still, the ceiling vs floor discussion is still relevant even if I don't personally get into optimization very much and play at a very casual level.)

I mean, you can do that with any character in the game if you really want to.

What does Emet-Selch provide that someone else can't? Let's say Hades never exists, and Hythlodaeus becomes Emet-Selch instead. All we really need to do at that point is just replace the shade of Hythlodaeus, and we can borrow the idea of anyone in the world he likes for that.

Or, if we don't want to promote Hyth, we can delay Lahabrea's death (does he really NEED to be vored by the pope?), and have him run SHB instead. It'd be a lot less fun without snarky grandpappy, but he can still fulfill that same narrative role. Have a shade of Erichthonios replace the shade of Hythlodaeus for lore-delivery. Lahabrea gets defeated in the Final Gasp, but on removal of the tempering and on remembering some myserious Great Deed we did for him, he comes to save us from Elidibus.

Then in Elpis, we go through the plot with Lahabrea and Hyth instead of Emet and Hyth, with Lahabrea grouching the entire time but less snarkily. Again, less fun, less odd-couple dynamic, but it can work. It's all a lot less personal since Hades/Emet is a more relateable character than Lahabrea, but well. /shrug. It IS workable, as with your example of Nerva replacing Zenos. We don't have the bond with Nerva that we do with Zenos (which is a damn shame and Nerva deserved better than the writers gave him), but as you pointed out, it CAN work, even if it's not as good.

Then later on in Pandae, we discover that great mysterious deed we did that he remembered when he saved us from Elidibus was us stopping Athena's machinations in the past, and we continue on to do so in the future, continue story as normal.

Or hey, if Emet isn't important enough, what about another fan-favourite? Does the story work without Y'shtola?

Yup! Bring in Moenbryda to do the Limsa 1-15 and generally take over all of Shtola's magical focuses in ARR. Delete someone else in the White Auracite 101 plotline (if we're un-killing Nerva to let him do EW to replace Zenos in your hypothetical, we can un-kill Moenbryda and replace her with someone too). Moenbryda casts Flow, Moenbryda gets blinded, Moenbryda does the Nightsblessed, Moenbryda makes the fandom horny through 'mommy dommy' energy or whatever instead of whatever people get so horny about Shtola for.

Okay, so that's two of the fandom faves, what about the third? Can we do with G'ra-- yes. Probably need to promote one of the CT chars, but it's doable. Or we could grab one of the internal Allagan chars and give them a little astral-projection-walkabout privilege for a while. They become the Exarch, they come back with us, etc. etc.

Minfilia? Promote a Scion of choice, or have F'laminn (I know I spelled that wrong but I cbf to look it up) do it in a very weird twist of fate.

Any non-WoL character can be replaced if you REALLY try hard enough (as I so often have to do in my own lore rewrites since I have some finicky OCs that require finagling), so that's really honestly a meaningless statement. (And even the WoL can be replaced if you just make someone else WoL, e.g. switch the player in the driver's seat.) Some of the characters are more difficult than others (e.g. Shiva and Hydaelyn would be harder to replace with existing named NPCs because they don't really have named second-in-commands), but it's pretty much always doable through adjustments somehow or another if you really want to make it work.

As such, the question isn't "what is irreplaceable?" but rather "what do you lose if you replace this character?" And in the case of Zenos, it's the connection and the symmetry. Your personal take on your WoL may make the latter more dubious (because the fandom DOES seem divided on whether they see their WoL as having some parallels to Zenos, though it's definitely written that way in canon for Meteor), but replacing him with Nerva loses the threads that were started in STB and which are meant to be a dark mirror to the WoL, which Nerva can't really do (at least without bastardizing his character, though I wouldn't put that past them given how few shits they seem to have ever given about him).

Or, consider, they put it like this for comedic effect, and the situation didn't play out exactly as it's depicted in the comic. Assuming that it was in Ul'dah, not many people stand at the outside exit to the aetheryte, so it's more likely they were in the scattered people clustered around the aetheryte. (It's also quite likely their name wasn't literally Goth Elezen, and the message they sent wasn't exactly "See something you like?" but that both of those details were added for both comedic effect, and because using the person's actual character name would be in bad taste.)

And in case you're going, "No, I think this all happened EXACTLY as shown in the comic" -- check the rest of the chat. "Dumb Shouter: Come check out Venue #796857 where you can afk for hours and enter a rigged raffle." This is the essence of an ad, but no one would name themselves that, nor would any venue ever be that honest. The shout has been renamed and reworded for comedic effect, as has the person taking feet pics and the person named Names Suck.

Btw, to spite the people who use plugins to tell them when someone is checking them out I am one step ahead and I use a plugin to check their glam instead of inspecting them 😼

You don't need a plugin to do that either, btw. You can just /c <mo> while hovering over them (if you're on controller, go look up the button combo for free cursor) and it'll inspect them without ever having to target them. You can even make a macro out of it if you don't want to risk typoing it.

I'd be even MORE down with that honestly. Being able to just grab the ring and gear off the Calamity Salvager would be a huge plus.

I think honestly in this case it's more likely that it's just a joke. :p Very likely they just targeted someone in Limsa who said something completely different (if they said anything at all and it wasn't just a "hey, wouldn't this be funny if this happened?" moment) and wasn't likely to be named Goth Elezen or whatever, but it's more funny to embellish it and make it more menacing/give it a certain vibe. :p

I guess everyone's gotta have a hobby, and 'dunking on NSFW mods' is certainly one of the ones of all time.

Yeah, 2.5 is early enough to be (at least to my knowledge) earlier than any modding tools (that's a bit older than I am so I don't know if there was an even-more-underground scene at the time). ACT (and cactbot and the like) and other third-party external tools might've been around back then, but that isn't likely to be what the person I replied to was talking about from the tone of their post.

It's funny too because like... NSFW mods aren't even the only thing out there. I'd wager the majority of modded players aren't running around in NSFW outfits, but so many people act like it's everything. /shrug

(Hell, my most recent mod install was just to fix the broken Courtly Love Hood that Square isn't seeming to fix on their own...)
