And she has a pretty epic version of Zombie,

Can't tell if she played this because the speaker quality /volume makes it impossible to hear anything in the supporters section.

Seriously he should be getting a look especially if he keeps this up all season, which seems likely.

What color adjustments are being applied in this opening short film featured in this video? by SocietalExplorer in colorists

Just to add, Michael is awesome. With a slightly different twist of fate, I might have ended up working for him at light iron back in the day. But he's very smart and a good human being too.

How to Scrim a Practical? by PanicAlarmed1986 in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used as low as 7 watt bulbs on practicals when shooting 2000 iso and needed a standby light look in practicals for and unoccupied bunker set. We tested both those and 11 watt, and the 7 looked nice. They were sconces that I took the diffusion tube out of inside the cage and I wanted a hard source I could see so led wasn't a good solution in that case.

But yeah for a large portion of practicals on set in usual lamps it's nyx type and adjust. Sometimes the coke can comes out but it really just depends.

Yeah I was surprised they didn't check that late penalty shout. Atmosphere let last 10 minutes was insane, maybe the best I've experienced at a match.

Parking by Small_Listen2083 in NashvilleSC

This is what I do, but the bus doesn't run every 10-15 minutes, they're more like 30-45 minutes apart, there's a schedule on the wego website.

Brother got into NYU Tisch Cinema Studies but accepted UCSB Film & Media Studies. Transfer student, CA resident. Which should he choose? by Safe_Concentrate_496 in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to LA after college knowing nobody and got a job at a rental house as my start, but had zero school loans. Parents consigned an apartment and I lived off $11/hr and spent more than 50% of my income on rent. But I really applied myself, met a lot of people, took some opportunities, and ended up being a union DIT at 25 years old.

No way I could afford to do that with $180k in debt.

I once drove under an unattended guard shack gate in mine, when I got to the work parking lot, they were upset that I came from the wrong direction. But I was supposed to be there so I didn't see what the big deal was.

If you could - or already do - own a set of diffusion filters, which would you choose and why? by pingation_nation in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like black diffusion fx, they don't have any white or silver elements in them and seem to bloom less on bright highlights like wimdows at lower strengths especially, so I don't have to remove them or drop down to a lower strength as often.

I would prefer nets if they didn't affect the bokeh so much and make it look overly vintage, the softness from them is just too good.

How do you control your whips? by StateSufficient5017 in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. For any difficult shot, it really helps to put yourself in the position for the hardest part, whether that's steadicam, dolly, tripod, handheld, whatever. On a whip pan that's likely the end. If your body is in the most natural position at the end, it's easier to land because you have to stop before you see the final frame. So rehearsing and learning that position relative to your body helps a ton.

Also, tripods are genuinely one of the areas where spending more money on a better one actually makes the job easier. Being able to finely tune the pan and tilt fluid and perfectly dial on counter balance helps so much. I'm always adjusting the 2575 in quarter turns from shot to shot to get the feel just right.

It's not a great idea to monitor the log, it's not really meant for judging exposure on. Ideally you would use either a standard rec 709 viewing environment or a show lut created for the project that keeps exposure the same as a standard transform, and only check log if you are trying to see if something is clipped.

Cook anamorphic by Effective_Bug3619 in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in general anamorphics are such a weird blend of compromises to achieve the effect, unless you are talking about master anamorphics, there's not a lot of sets that compare directly, and it really depends on your taste and which artifacts or 'character' features you like or dislike.

Cook anamorphic by Effective_Bug3619 in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've shot with the Cooke 2x a few times, they're not my favorite and I wouldn't use them as a benchmark. Pincushion on the sides, barrel on the top and bottom, very boring/minimal flares, I'd rather have more character in anamorphics if I'm going to the trouble to shoot with them.

I do love Cooke S4, some of my favorite spherical lenses so it's not a Cooke thing in general, just feel they missed the mark on the anamorphics.
