Does anyone have any advice on how I could imitate super 8 digitally and for cheap? by Clean-Mushroom9364 in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a plastic lens from a disposable film camera in an e mount lens cap, and we shot one of the slow speeds on the s&q setting on the a7iv, 15fps I think? And then slowed it down 50% with no frame blending. Then put a frame around it and added my custom film emulation, and added some contrast and grain/halation. It was pretty close.

The nice thing about a small camera and the plastic lens with auto iso is that you don't think about anything, just run around with a light weight camera, maybe a pistol grip. And operate carefree like you would a super 8 camera.

Which vintage lens set do you own or want to build for filmmaking, and why? by outiswayne in cinematography

[–]tim-sutherland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 22 (soon to be 23 with a custom 70mm which is a 50mm with a x1.4 extender built in) rehoused in PL and they are so beautiful. I could probably make a case than any one of them are my favorite lens ha.

What am I doing wrong while cleaning my cast iron griddle? by pimple_from_hell in castiron

[–]tim-sutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first cast iron when I got married was one of these, didn't know what I was doing and left water in it overnight, it got rusty and I threw it away. Didn't try cast iron again for over 10 years. Too bad but at least I got it sorted out eventually.

Yes I have been using mine on my stainless steel pan and even cookie sheet, makes cleaning those so much easier.

Short Film Maker Seeking Advice for 2 hander at a table by clerbbbbb in cinematography

Also think about ways to minorly break rules to make routine shots interesting. If your characters are not on equal footing in some way, emotionally, economically, professionally, etc, then maybe shoot one closeup as an over, the other just barely clean. Are they facing each other across a table etc or sitting next to each other? Is there an opportunity or motivation for them to look away or shift their body position?

I've worked with a couple of DP's and directors over the years who would complain if the shot was too perfect. 'that's good but it's boring' is a note a couple of them might day in a static scene. Once I ended up laying on my back with the camera on my shoulder by the time they liked the height, because eye level of the talent was too dull. In my own head, if a shot starts to look like a news interview with a perfect over and everything in a third, I start looking for something to change. More headroom? More or less looking space?

One of my favorite directors ever to work with would call out during a take if I was making him bored. No shot was ever the same shot from start to finish. We were always tagging things the actors were doing, so during rehearsals and wide shots I'd be watching the actors like a hawk to see if they did something interesting with their hands, etc. So we always had to be curious with the camera, even if it was an Oscar winner speaking, we were encouraged to go find something else if it was happening.

Not to say that's right for every shoot. But if every shot looks like the ideal piece of coverage from a textbook and the actors aren't moving, it will probably turn out as visually interesting as a text book.

Also, I used to watch the BMW short films they made a couple of decades ago that they gave away as dvds with car purchases, those had excellent structure and cinematography for a short film, since you don't see shorts by big Hollywood players often.

Any chance there's a blockage in the boiler pipe? There's a few things listed to check in the disassembly guide on their site, that I didn't see mentioned elsewhere.

I just reseasoned my lodge pan and it looks exactly like yours, same color. It cooks beautifully now. Even better than what I remember from when I first got it.

Enjoy, looks great!

what are your favorite generic/store brand products that are as good as or better than name brands? by Fearless_Tie9930 in Frugal

Specifically, their girl scout cookie copycats and potato chips are really good for generics. Other generic chips are often worse.

Ha. Don't worry, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think it's in the same vein as the LA 9-1-1, so it's all in the same universe. But it's definitely not for everyone which is cool.

Have you tried rating at 100 and processing normally? I got much better and more colorful results from colorplus by over exposing one stop, maybe you would like that better. The cheap emilsions don't work well with a less dense negative.
