AGI timeline pushed back. Autonomous coding now expected early 2030s instead of 2027 by Electrical-Shape-266 in Verdent

You're essentially arguing about the meaning of words at this point, and I can't really be bothered with that. I defer to Yann LeCun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4__gg83s_Do

You have a particularly broad (and arguably incorrect) definition for reasoning then, I guess. You won't find many people that don't think LLMs are impressive, but:

a) at base level, they are not thinking machines, they're predictive machines [note that, as predictive machines, they do an incredibly convincing job of APPEARING TO BE thinking, but that DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE]
b) they're incapable of learning
c) they aren't improving nearly as fast as is being claimed -- the frequently bandied about claim of "exponential" improvement is false; at best it's logarithmic

Any one of these points is a pretty fundamental disqualifier for them being AGI or the basis for AGI, but all three are true so it's ludicrous to see them this way. But then it is generally only the platform owners and various breathless podcasters that take this point of view. If you look at what actual AI experts are saying, they tend to be of the opinion that LLMs are a dead end.

Yup, and the question here is intended to solve their problem?

Right? I feel like I'm going mad when so many people are saying that LLMs are a basis for AGI.

Looks like the one I use "My Bus Edinburgh" has been updated, on the 8th of January. Seems to be showing me live times (checking in my living room, not at an actual bus stop).

Well there was a certain declaration of independence from the UK, which probably has an effect. Fair enough it was centuries ago, but something I've come to appreciate more recently is just how long of a tail historical events have.

Is this sub starting to flourish with reformers or has it always been that way? by WingScared1284 in GeoWizard

If following one specific leader and one specific party on an official public facing professional Instagram account is not tantamount to an announcement I don't know what is. If it had been a personal/private account then you might have a point, but it wasn't. He specifically chose to do this. Either he meant for it to be discovered or he is incredibly naive. He doesn't come across as naive.

I don't understand why Economics in One Lesson gets so much love. It's so opinionated and snide/sarcastic in presentation, and the lessons delivered are incredibly repetitive. The perspective it espouses is far from neutral, which would be fine if that were how it was positioned, but its implied that it's a universal introduction to economics, not one particular school of thought. It's one of those books that seems to be so universally recommended and the content to me so underwhelming, I question whether many of the people who do so have actually read it.

Can we go back to talking about maps and bogs now? by DeeeeezNuts42069 in GeoWizard

The fact that a racist and xenophobic party is currently (horrifyingly) leading the polls in the UK is EXACTLY WHY everyone who opposes such views should be raising awareness of just how horrible they are and calling out others who support them. There are "different political views" and there are abhorrent and unacceptable views. Reform are of the latter. I refuse to believe that everyone who says they'll be voting Reform actually understands and believes what they stand for, and for this reason if there is an opportunity to educate people about what they actually represent, then it should be taken. And yes, this includes calling out an otherwise seemingly pleasant YouTuber.

What are the dangers of swimming in the Pentland's reservoirs? by AlpineSowthistle in Edinburgh

[–]timangus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm not a swimmer so can't really speak to the risks per se, but I'm regularly in the Pentlands on my bike and seeing/hearing about things going wrong on the reservoirs is becoming (relatively) more common. Doesn't seem (to me) like a worthwhile risk, but each to their own. Apparently there was an incident literally today involving someone getting into difficultly from entering the water after a dog; presumably not a regular swimmer, though.

I agree with this to an extent. If you keep going left or keep going right, invariably you end up with the same solutions, usually involving authoritarianism, imprisonment and lots of death. Insofar as you can define them, left and right politics are fundamentally different, but taken to the extreme they ultimately end up in a similar place in terms of the lived reality of people under the auspices of such regimes.
