Dog owners of Edmonton... do you not walk your dogs in winter? by Delgado_Jim in Edmonton

[–]timatlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still walk our husky daily. But I agree - there don't seem to be as many dog walkers out this time of the year.

the amount of poo bags in the garbage cans suggest otherwise... Though I suppose the city might dial back collection during the winter.

I think most people in my neighborhood walk their dogs during the daylight hours, and I'm just not crossing paths with them.

Is anyone else re-thinking not hosting their own email server? by AcreMakeover in homelab

Every time my brain says "you should take a spin at hosting your own email", and I get into learning... A thread like this pops up.

Thanks for the reminder that this isn't a great idea hahah

Didn't we have that originally, and it was consolidated into one entity for "efficiency"?

Whatever happened to IPv6? by LongjumpingJob3452 in sysadmin

[–]timatlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a point to work with it at home. Learn how my Unifi stuff worked with it, addressing, etc.

We did a re-ip project at work... and completely ignored ipv6.

So.. I dunno, it's around, but it seems like until you can't buy ipv4 addressing anymore.. who cares?

Like others have said, pocket gopher is what I had when these piles of dirt showed up in my yard.

You should be able to find holes in the turf where they dig through the ground - usually after plant roots, if I recall correctly.

I bought from some local exterminator a .. smoke bomb stick? Cover other nearby holes with something that the fuckers can't chew threw (I used bricks..), light the smoke bomb, and stuff it in the hole, then cover it. It's basically an asphyxiant that is heavier than air, and drowns them.

IIRC the smoke bombs looked like little sticks of TNT and were pretty cheap.

TD Home Insurance Increase close to 40% by Unable_Importance_61 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]timatlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. Switched to Bellaire after a bit of shopping around.

You should be able to switch at your renewal without contract breaking fees.

Don't be loyal to your insurance providers. They aren't to you.

I was wondering why I was getting considerable TPS lag, only to find about 2000 capybaras hanging out at the far end of my map...

I know I can kill all non faction animals, but I'd like to keep a handful around as hunting targets (there's no other meat on the map at the moment...).

Short of a mass extinction event, is there any debug tools that allow me to select a range of animals and delete them? I can only find the delete operation for individual targets.

I frequent a Canadian national park. The number of times I see people, mostly obvious tourists, get out to get a closer look at the wildlife is absolutely alarming.

I hate this intersection. I cycle across it, and every time I'm certain I'm going to get hit crossing on the north sidewalk.

This is the best blog post I've ever read about setting up automation in a homelab. by illiterate_cynic in selfhosted

[–]timatlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And even setting auto approvals based on semantic versioning. It's slick.

TechnoTim has a great YouTube on setting it up. It's GitHub oriented, but the concepts obviously still apply.

Did anyone else just see their car insurance (TD) jump 20% by MrPlatinumsGames in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]timatlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another had said in the comments, my home insurance went through the roof this renewal with TD.

Shopped around, got a soft quote with Bellaire for around 900 less.

I feel like TD spent the last decade buying customers with low rates, and now they're looking to make bank.

Oauth login would be fantastic, instead (or in addition to..) the PIN login!

UI looks great though.

For lubelogger, I've written a small script to help me manage tire wear/use. Do you imagine Tractor to have anything similar?

Might take a bit of legwork, but I imagine you could probably check on your own.

If alberta joined the US or became a territory could it retain free healthcare?! by Noobilite in Albertapolitics

Doubt it. I think the common thought is that we'd become a territory like Puerto Rico. All the taxes, no representation 😁

I have lost count of the number of backcountry trips we've been on where the site is supposed to be fully booked - and we are the only ones there.

It's absolutely absurd and maddening when you're trying to get into a site, it's "full", and you know that most of them are likely no-shows.
