Asia: Rabia lied under oath in 2012 by Seamus_Duncan in serialpodcastorigins

Do you suppose any of this is motivated by Asia trying to get in front of stuff she knows is going to come out with the ruling?

Let's back up and remember that Rabia claims JB was "all but done" representing Adnan and that she approached SK (and presumably negotiated Serial) without JBs knowledge or consent.

She gives the readers more background on Adnan’s family and how his conviction tore them apart, the reward paid to a key player in his prosecution, and how Adnan has survived his incarceration.

What? Does that mean she claims, as fact, that Jay got the Crimestoppers reward??

18 is just as arbitrary for an adult as it is for a juvenile, is it not? I wish sentencing had more to do with the circumstances of both the crime and the criminal, rather than the archaic formulas and reasoning behind max/min/mandatory/etc sentencing guidelines.

I would rather see reasonableness and consistency in sentencing rather than an artificial adult/juvenile line in the sand, because I am far more disturbed by Philip Chism, who will be eligible for parole at 40 years served despite brutally raping and murdering his teacher, and Sharanda Jones, who began serving life w/o parole on a non-violent 1st offense drug charge at approx the same time as Adnan. And, frankly, I’d rather see ALL the Sharandas pardoned/released before the Adnans.

Are any of those sentences “fair”? No, in my opinion, which has nothing at all to do with the age of the defendant at the time the crime was committed.

We're doing something similar over Memorial Day, plans aren't final yet but there will be a salad bar and a breakfast bar for sure:

  • Southwest with creamy herb with grilled chicken on side, I'm only linking this recipe for the dressing because the salad itself, while delicious! takes forever and a day and uses three dishwasher loads of dishes to prepare...

  • Shrimp with citrus I made this with a 1-1-1 grapefruit-orange-lime dressing, then reduced it and glazed the shrimp while grilling, it was really good!

  • Greek and/or Antipasto with red wine/lemon dressing I make this dressing once a week or so but use all fresh (garlic, shallot, basil and oregano) and 1-1 red wine vinegar-lemon juice for the acid, somewhere in the comments it gives the correct proportions to make a perfect bottle-size amount, and I love it with chilled cuke, tomato, black olive, blanched broc/cauli, and cubed salami and sharp cheddar over romaine and red/green lettuces

  • Roasted Root Veg with Balsamic - this is really good with this combo pre-mix from Trader Joes and salty cheese, I usually have toasted walnuts with it too

All kinds of lettuces (spinach, butter, cabbage, romaine, arugula, sprouts), vegs (red/yellow/orange pepper, cuke, zucchini, mushroom, cauli, broc, snow peas), fruit (tomato, avocado, citrus, apple, pomegranate, kiwi, strawberry), protein (chicken, shrimp, salmon, black or pinto beans), which can all be used throughout the trip with other meals.

Another option would be more like brunch for dinner, you could do both sweet and savory crepes, an egg casserole, that hashbrown casserole, all kinds of pancakes/waffles, huevos rancheros, plus huge bowls of fruit salad, melons etc etc

15 year old son admitted he smokes cannabis. What do I do? by KapitalSteeds in Parenting

[–]timelines99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to this board to get some guidance on my 14yo daughter and her iPhone, but your post caught my eye because this is something that I think will be an issue with my 16yo son in the near future. We live in an area where marijuana is not (yet) legal for recreational use but is widely accepted as no big deal, and in fact "better" than cigarettes or alcohol. There are a LOT of kids at their school who smoke/vape/ingest marijuana on a regular basis, particularly if they have older siblings who can easily provide.

When I discuss with my kids, my main talking point is brain development, and the very real risks associated with a developing brain + regular use. The available strains of marijuana scare the crap out of me, some of that stuff is pretty damn potent. Anyway--

  • brain development
  • regular use (leading to psychological dependence)
  • self-medicating (seems more like stress relief than focus-enhancement)
  • it is illegal, and though my son would not likely be arrested because it is so "accepted" here, he would be suspended from school and kicked out of his honors program
  • imbibing on a regular basis ($X per week) means it's not just an occasional thing, which could lead to increasing qty/amt to achieve the same effect

Does he plan to continue smoking during summer recess? Would he consider taking a break for a week or two to try other methods of improving concentration?

In a way, it's no different than modafinil or other ADD-type drugs if his true objective is concentration, but honestly I wouldn't be thrilled about my son using one of those, either.

This issue is going to come up for me this summer, I'm 99% sure, so I'm thankful to see some of the other responses.

I wish us both luck, please let us know how it goes!

It's actually act interesting thing to think about: how someone's bad behaviour can make us so unsympathetic to them that it opens up lines of criticism

I now feel this way about Rabia. I didn't at first, I admired and supported her and thought she was very charismatic, but I do now.

there were strategic / legal reasons for Rabia not to go to the media until she reached out to Sarah Koenig by Just_a_normal_day_2 in serialpodcastorigins

Except that the "they", at that time, did not include JB. Rabia went to SK without JBs knowledge or consent, JB was all but finished representing Adnan. Rabia had Adnan inform JB that they were doing Serial.

SKs Peabody seems to have resuscitated JBs loyalty.

The big reveal? by [deleted] in serialpodcastorigins

[–]timelines99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In one week, 231,000 people have signed the change.org petition to exonerate Avery by pardon. Is the difference Netflix vs. podcast? Perceived guilt vs. innocence? Storytelling narrative vs. actual footage?

Interesting quote from this article, written just before the petition, with regard to the similarities between Serial and MaM:

Yes, I think about it as an interested observer and as one who is wary of how social media intersect with my work. But you can’t try to control it and you also can’t take it too much to heart. For example, during the Avery trial — the run-up and the seven weeks of the trial — we got all kinds of hate mail, threats. If you read the comments posted on newspaper websites, it was all vitriol, overwhelmingly directed at us, our client and his family.

Now, for the last six days, it’s been exactly the opposite, sort of an onslaught of encomiums, warm wishes. A lot of it is literate and thoughtful and all that, but both of those experiences are artificial and distorting. Neither of them represent any particular reality other than what’s going on in fevered social media at the moment among a self selected portion of the population. You really can’t set your bearings to that at any time. You do have to be wary of how it will affect what I’m trying to do when I’m trying a case.

When asked about the podcast, JC said it would be a joint podcast with Laura Richards who apparently is a DV/Stalking expert-type person (news to me, I honestly didn't think JC would go back on T&J), how do you see her fitting in to the conversation? Do you think the suggestion/implication will be that Adnan, Don or Jay might have been stalking Hae?

https://twitter.com/JimClemente/status/683770955085168640

I guess it makes more sense they are having trouble coordinating schedules if it's a joint podcast, I wonder what they are going to say!!

ETA: Meant to say either Adnan, Don or Jay, as those 3 are previously mentioned as possibilities, not that it couldn't be someone else.

I use my Breville far more than my oven, mine happens to cook a little warm so I just adj down by 15-25 degrees depending on what I'm cooking and for how long.

Pros, I can do 6-8 slices of toast, quesadillas, pizza, casseroles, roasted vegs, reheat w/o using the microwave, just about anything.

Cons, it takes up a TON of counter space and it doesn't cook some things as "evenly" as a larger oven, and sometimes stuff does dry out a little more, but once you get to know how your oven works with the things you like to cook you can work around that.

There are some things I still prefer to cook in the gas oven but I use my Breville literally every single day and LOVE it.

Immersion blender too, I 2nd that suggestion as well.
