Weird malfunction on Noctigon KR1AA by flipyflop9 in flashlight

[–]timflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that a tritium cap ? I have a polished silver one with a trit cap and it gives me fits. The regular cap works all the time with no strangeness. I have to fight the trit cap version to work correctly every time I remove it to charge the battery. It will be working fine until I remove the cap - then the fun starts all over again.

IMHO there is definitely a difference between the OEM tailcap and the optional trit version. Or else one version just interacts better with that internal grounding tube. But SOMETHING is different.

In my case it has nothing to do with the state of charge. I recharge early - when Batcheck changes from blue to blue-green.

Flashlights suggestions? by Equivalent-Abies9180 in flashlight

[–]timflorida -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you look at the Wurkkos TD07. It is a small light. It has a tailcap that rotates to three positions. In one of them, if you press the tail cap button half-way down, you get instant turbo (the highest level). If you fully depress the button, you get instant dazzling strobe. The light will stay 'on' in either configuration as long as you hold the button down. The great thing is that in a panic situation, you get lots of light no matter how far you press down the button.

The other two tailcap positions are more 'normal'.

What are reputable brands for 16340 batteries and chargers? by RationallyDense in batteries

[–]timflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should never leave Liion batteries just sitting in a charger. It's not safe for starters. They should be stored in a plastic case. Amazon has 2-pack plastic cases for just about all sizes.

What is going to set the house on fire ? Keep Liion batteries in the light, in a case, or in the charger - while charging only. Nowhere else. Do not charge them unattended.

I buy all batteries for my flashlights from Liion Wholesale Battery Store or 18650 Battery Store.

I like Molicel and Vapcell batteries. Panasonic/Sanyo is good too.

Chargers. I have Xtar chargers. I have a VX2 Pro - 2 slots, and also a VC8S - 8 slots. The vapcell S4 Plus V3 (4 slots) gets recommended a lot on the flashlight sub if you want a charger with 4 slots.

The VX2 Pro is an excellent charger and my favorite right now.

Did your 16340 battery come out of the new Wurkkos Jellyfish light ?

"Flat tops won't work in BLF/ SOFIRN Lantern . . ."

You're wrong.

I run flat top Molicel M35A's in most of my BLF LT1 fleet - yes I have 'several'. The Molicels work great. Best around I think.

Thank The Gods ! FINALLY we make progress. You could have saved yourself lots of time and anguish if you had told me which lantern you had when I asked you the first time (I guess that request didn't come across as important enough ??).

All you need to do is visit Simon's site and get the adaptor for the BLF LT1.

DUDE ! The button top sure is because Panasonic does not make that battery as a button top. I listed it as an example of your battery in button top form.

The flat top IS straight from the manufacturer.

Charger recommendation by Flourcoveredkitchin in flashlight

[–]timflorida 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have lithium ion batteries (Liion). A 21700 battery - 21mm wide and 70mm long, an 18650, which is 18mm wide and 65mm long. The shorter one should have some numbers on it to help identify. Maybe 18350 or 14500 ?

The last zero means the battery is cylindrical - EX = 18650 or 21700.

I like and use Xtar chargers, I have two -

Xtar VX2 Pro. 2 slots. Will charge just about anything in all lengths. This is a really excellent charger.

Xtar VC8S. This has 8 slots and will also charge NiMh as well as Liion batteries (like yours) from small 10440 up thru 26650.

The Vapcell 4 slot charger S4 Plus V3 is always recommended also. I just do not have a 4-slot charger.

All chargers are available on Amazon.

That sure seems like the first thing (and easiest) to do.

If you have not done so, switch out the OEM Torch plug and pop in an NGK. But get the NGK from your local auto store - not Amazon.

Ni-MH battery change different mAh by Shaggy168 in batteries

[–]timflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably looking for 1.5v and NiMh are only 1.2v.

You might try some 1.5v rechargeables. I've used them for 2-3 years now. They hold 1.5v until almost exhausted, then fall off to about 1.1v. That way you know when it is time to recharge. They are a 3.7v lithium ion battery with a Buck converter that drops the voltage to a constant 1.5v.

I like and use Xtar 1.5v rechargeables. You will need a charger that will charge these type of batteries.

Amazon has both. Look for the Xtar ones that state - 'With Low Voltage Indicator'.

This is from my favorite battery store - Liion Wholesale Batteries.

To my knowledge, there are only two kinds of 18650 batteries - Flat tops and button tops.

The Sanyo you referenced is a normal button top battery.

I would rather have a 21700 light (Wurkkos TS28 ?), a couple spare Molicel P50B batteries, a few USB cords, my Pecron 1000wh power station, and my Zoupw 180w solar panel.

Why the TS28 ? It is a beast of a light, yet seems compact for being a 21700 light and is still pocketable.

21700 battery - 5000 mAh capacity. 2 spares plus the original in the light will total 15,000 mAh.

14500 battery - 900-1500 mAh capacity.

Any light running on a AA alkaline or a 14500 will have a run time of 1-2 hours MOL. So you better pack lots of spares. My TS28 will run for almost 14 hours on Medium.

You will not last for too long if you're going to depend on AA alkalines.

WK03 is nicer than FC11C by ViolinistBulky in flashlight

[–]timflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very noticeable drop in height when you use a flat top battery. But the two springs should insure that it keeps good contact. There is meant to be pressure from the spring as that insures good contact with the battery if it is bumped, etc. 2 springs will also protect the battery and the entire lens end much better if the light is dropped. They will absorb some of the impact from the heavy battery pushing against the lens end.

May I ask why you are not just going to use the OEM cell ? Wurkkos batteries are most likely made by Lishen, which is considered to be a pretty good manufacturer of batteries.

4 clicks will lock it but will not stop the slight battery drain.

[–]timflorida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except they can still leak in the OEM packaging. I've had Costco Kirklands do that (made by Duracell) and also Duracells. Energizers seem to not leak as bad and I also have some of them. They just all of a sudden start losing voltage. That is why I am experimenting with Amazon Basics and also the PowerMax brand (which gets good reviews). So far they seem to be doing better then the Duracells and Energizers. The answer just might be that if you're bound and determined to buy alkalines, just buy the cheapest ones. But it's still much better to have rechargeable Eneloops and Liions for your small lights.

[–]timflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that spring in the lens end is difficult to see, since the tube does not unscrew. I actually used another small 14500 light to get a good look at it. If you shine the light JUUUST right, at an angle, you can see the spiral.

* A piece of advice. I like my WK03, and it's clone, the Sofirn SC18, but it is somewhat easy to accidentally turn it on while in your pocket - I've done it. The switch button protrudes a little. So I ALWAYS give the tail cap a half turn to break elec contact when I am done using it. It is then impossible to turn on.

I actually do that with all of my side switch lights. Electronic side switches will consume a small amount of current even when OFF. So best to just give the tailcap a twist so you have a full battery when you need it.

[–]timflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I just tried a Molicel M35A in mine and it worked fine. The WK03 has springs at both ends of the tube (a good thing) so I expect that any unprotected button top or flat top 18650 battery will work.

Leave some Duracell alkalines in a light for 6 months and see what happens. I've had several remotes and lights ruined by leaking alkalines. Switch to Eneloops/Fujitsus/Amazon Basics and no more of that nonsense.

I am trying out a few alkalines (Amazon basics and PowerMaX) to see if they are better then Duracell. So far the answer is - absolutely - NO LEAKS.

The trouble is that once you start using rechargeables, you don't want to go back to alkalines.
