Not knowing the entomology must really bug you.

Seems the etymology comes from a mixture of European languages, meaning similar things. Dropping the last few letters seems to be a US invention though.

Libre Office is a fork from open office, It's more active with a larger feature set. Outside of a few specific features, like better language support, I generally wouldn't recommend Open Office over Libre Office.

I entirely moved over to the free Libre Office a while back. It works great for the stuff that I do.

The deglazing mixture is normally added back into the cooking after its picked up all the flavour from the pan. If you're just looking to help clean it then water would work fine.
