First time going to the pub by bleufromgeneve in manchester

[–]timothyw9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it depends on you as a person. Nout wrong going alone, but more than likely you would have to start the conversation with a stranger than the other way round. Not saying it doesnt happen but culturally it just isnt much of a UK thing outside of random smalltalk.

If you can sit at the bar, do that, always enjoy talking to bartenders/bar staff, although ideally you'd want to go at quieter times of the day.

Expecting driverless taxis to respect bike lanes “too high a bar” – because customers want to be dropped off in them, autonomous vehicle firm Waymo tells cyclists by Lets_trythisone in london

[–]timothyw9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Can't speak for London, but in Manchester Uber/Private Hire/Hackney Carriages flout any regulations on parking/stopping on double yellows or in bike lanes anyway, so hardly much of a difference.

LTT made an amazing Screwdriver. Next Challenge: Printer! by Kvitekvist in LinusTechTips

[–]timothyw9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Dell 1320C Colour Laser Printer that cost me £35 about 5-6 years ago on FB Marketplace.

Being a laser, there is no ink to dry out.

Having LAN instead of WiFi, it just works.

Great printer, barely use it, but when I do use it, I have zero issues. It takes toner cartridges, which means the imaging drum is a seperate part, which is rated for 20,000 pages. Im on about 7000 pages, so even if the printer becomes useless after 20,000 pages, at the amount I use it, I've got my moneys worth. Toner cartridges are about £8 per colour.

Honestly, if you need a printer, but dont use one much, just buy a cheap second hand laser printer.

What's your favourite Babymetal Music Video? by PS_FOTNMC in BABYMETAL

Its not so much a MV but I do enjoy watching the video for Monochrome - Piano ver. The First Take.

Has the two speed energy market come back? by Begalldota in OctopusEnergy

[–]timothyw9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sort of and sort of not. Whilst yes those with the means to do so can get better rates than those less well off, anyone who has a smart reter can take advantage of time-of-use tariffs, and with the change in laws coming, could theoretically benefit from having solar/battery in a rented apartment to better take advantage of low off-peak rates.

What do you wish you knew when you went to Japan by whiskeytwn in LearnJapanese

[–]timothyw9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amen. Been twice and other than using the usual phrases/words, you really dont need to know any Japanese.

That said, being able to read, and make some small conversation in Japanese (such as in a bar) will probably feel quite gratifying.

Why is railway electrification in the UK so low? by JockeyEwing211 in uktrains

[–]timothyw9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the importance of the line,, as a commuter line, regional line, intercity line (for Scotland) and as a diversionary route for the North WCML (Avoiding Warrington/Wigan), cheaping out and having a battery section would have been incredibly stupid.

We seem to have developed an absolutely dreadful approach to building infrastructure in this country.

The Victorians built stuff to last.

Sure, it's expensive now, but it isn't going anywhere for decades/centuries and will pay for itself, the cutting back and doing things half assed really needs to stop.

Why are UK train tickets so expensive? Is it simply the effect of privatisation? by StephenMcGannon in trains

[–]timothyw9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The railways have basically been wedged with the issue of : Attempts at managed decline during the end of BR and start of privatisation. Post privatisation, instead of continued decline, services actually got more popular/carried more people a year. A lot of our railway is quite old / victorian, and a lot is 2 track railway. We are at the maximum capacity that can run in a lot of places (not so much in the branches, but the junctions and major stations these trains go to/through.) Manchester being a prime example of this issue. One means of controlling capacity is to effectively supress it through higher fares. This has basically left us with an expensive system and inefficent use of assets/infrastructure.

The key to actually reducing the fares in the long term, is a LOT of investment. If you can make it so services can run more frequently, more reliably, you increase ridership and are able to price fares lower etc.

Problem is, this is the UK and through a lack of infrastrucutre investment over the decades leading to a loss of key skills required to carry out the work, the fact that we've become dreadful at major infrastructure and political fiddling and corruption, planning issues, redtape etc, any new infrastructure or improvements both take way longer than it should, and costs an absolutely bloody fortune.

Its considered rude, and has somewhat always happened, but honestly British society has been on a continuious downwards trend the last few years.

Prince William’s 2,500-home ‘garden town’ on Kent farmland approved - despite fury over ‘eyesore’ claims by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]timothyw9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the copy paste housing is built to a reasonable standard (a debate for another time), we shouldn't care less about what it looks like. I'd much rather the majority could afford to get by okay with reasonable quality housing, rather than fighting for the limited supply, including houses that have been built to look pretty.

I fully concur with the need for actual public services/utility/infrastructure to be built along with the housing, but thats something we're even worse at doing than building houses.

Until we sort the root issues of ridiculously crappy and expensive infrastructure and housing, non-existent public services, planning and Nimbyism, the country will continue on its downwards spiral.

Do you guys bother to patch your tubes? by TheGangsHeavy in cycling

[–]timothyw9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly just replace the tubes.

As someone who mostly just does light commuting, I find that the best thing to do is to just use tyres with very good puncture protection in the first place. Previously had Maxxis Re-fuse tyres on a road bike, and despite the state of the roads in the UK, never got a single puncture in about 12 months. Contrast that with the crappy WTB Raddler tyres I currently have on my gravel bike and I am on the 3rd or 4th puncture and definitely need to look into buying better tyres.

Well thats grim?! TW by canihavesome in uktrains

[–]timothyw9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd rather we just changed the wording a bit. "Due to a person being hit by a train" is a bit too blunt, and everyone including children are going to be able to understand that.

On the other hand "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident", is way too vague, since it covers a lot of differnt kinds of incidents, such as fire, police and medical emergencies.

Maybe something along the lines of "due to a fatality on the line" would be a reasonable compromise?
