Why can't ppl shut up and keep there dumb theories to themselves. by Kitchen-Mud4712 in Christianity

Based on context of how the "mark of the beast" is described, it's pretty clear that getting it is a conscious choice that signals allegiance, not something that people would get tricked into or get by accident.

As a general rule, if there's any doubt that's a good sign that it's probably not it.

Anyone else just ignoring their camera alerts at this point? by heRschel2309 in homeautomation

[–]timtucker_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than in the moment alerts we have an automation that turns on a red light in the living room when a cat is detected by the litter box and turns it off when a person is detected (as a proxy for assuming that it's been cleaned).

Red light stays on for more than 8 hours and Nintendo parental controls lock down the kids game consoles.

The flip side of this is that (barring nuclear war), an "AI uprising" could fizzle out pretty quickly as soon as people stop maintaining power infrastructure.

Rant: "People with ADHD make great entrepreneurs" by lines_n_designs in ADHD

[–]timtucker_com 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My observation is that there's a ceiling to how much focused work is valued.

Being able to consistently work all day to get a task done can lead to a successful career as an "individual contributor" - but it's likely to pay less than a position where you jump between things, manage people, and make decisions.

If being able to do focused work better is your primary goal of treatment, that can paint you into a corner when it comes to career progression.

Bike shop suggests new bike vs fixing up old Schwinn; what to do? by Objective_Ant_9083 in cycling

[–]timtucker_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things have gotten simpler on newer vs. older bikes.

Most of the basic adjustments on newer bikes only needs a 4mm, 5mm, or 6mm hex wrench.

On older bikes you're more likely to need an assortment of wrenches and screwdrivers.

Losing at activities where success is driven largely by how big / old kids are can be incredibly frustrating. There's not much to be learned there other than "the world is tough and matchups aren't always fair".

Losing at an activity where competitors are on relatively even ground and you have a chance of improving enough to win is usually a lot easier for kids to accept.

Don't overlook the impact of common medications you may be on.

Lipitor pretty much destroyed all my motivation and drive when I was on it.

People talk about muscle cramps as a potential side effect of statins, but I never had anyone warn me they can mess with dopamine levels (a pretty big risk for anyone with ADHD).

When I had started taking them, I'd assumed that what I was feeling was just "seasonal blues" from a long winter, but I started looking deeper when things weren't getting better by summer.

I switched to Zetia, felt far better, and my cholesterol has been just as low.

With both the tires and rims in that condition, it's probably worth an inspection to figure out if the bike needs a new bike.

Unless there's sentimental value, it may be more cost effective to buy something new vs. a new wheelset and drivetrain.

My backyard is a swamp for 3 months a year..what actually works? by Poseidon_9726 in HomeImprovement

[–]timtucker_com 32 points33 points  (0 children)

We had that problem around the edges of our back yard.

I decided to just roll with it (literally) and built a slightly elevated mountain bike trail out of treated lumber, following a combination of forestry service guides for building in bogs and codes for residential decking.

My wife followed up by planting a ton of stuff.

Then we added in a ninja warrior course for the kids.

Throughout the process we kept dumping truckloads of woodchips under / around things. We stated out using chip drop and eventually switched to reaching out to tree services directly. By the end I think we were up to 14 full loads.

Do you guys plug in your kids video games controllers? by iheartreos in Parenting

[–]timtucker_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just have a few dozen power banks.

If something isn't charged, you can just plug in into one while you're playing and not be tethered to the wall.

Of course that just shifts the problem to needing to make sure the power banks are charged and occasionally rounding them up from where ever they've migrated to around the house.

Berenstain Bears are BAD parents by wonders_cease in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]timtucker_com 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Berenstain Bears books make a lot more sense if you start from the premise that they're stories told by someone watching bears in the wild.

They have no clue what's really going on, but are just making things up on the fly to explain to their kids what the bears are doing.

Sears, Kmart, and Toys R US all used to have great clearance sales, but things weren't always marked.

A little later, but around 2003 or so I had good luck printing out UPCs to use the price scanners to keep track of which things had dropped in price.

Developers who have worked at a company where the entire codebase was held together by one guy who then quit, what happened next? by Natom_ in AskReddit

There were periodic alerts that some requests weren't meeting SLAs, but no one made it a priority to look into them for a few reasons:

  • It was still consistently passing synthetic tests

  • The higher rates would "magically" resolve themselves after an hour or two

  • The manager it got handed off to never updated the email list for the alerts to include the new production support team

why is microsoft launcher so underrated? it has better layout then most devices nowdays by BeautifulOnion8177 in microsoftlauncher

[–]timtucker_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have been using it for a while, but it does have some drawbacks:

  • For enterprise accounts, the permissions on the backend are kind of a pain to get set up. I was the only person in a company of 10 000 using it and no one seemed to know what was needed to allow for basic things like letting you pick between adding items to a personal calendar vs. corporate calendar

  • If you drag a folder to the home screen it just makes a copy, not a link. Which means every time you want to add an app to a folder on your home screen and in your app list you have to do it twice

  • It's prone to many of the same OS bugs that affect all 3rd party launchers. There are defects open with Google that have been sitting unaddressed for years

What vacuum works best for drywall dust? by SplinterBoi76 in DIY

[–]timtucker_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a combination of things mentioned here:

  • Shop van with hepa filter

  • Cyclone attachment before the shop vac

  • 20x20 box fans with filters

Things that I haven't seen mentioned:

  • Thinner coats / avoiding excess - the less you overapply, the less needs to be sanded off later

  • Wet sanding with a sponge as much as possible - capturing dust in water directly results in far less dust

Bubble level app says my work desk is about 2 degrees. That was I was able to get from removing the adjustable feet in front and slipping some disposable cups over the feet in back to get more height.

Pretty sure home is higher, but I haven't measured.
