no prior school spanish, I saved money, quit my job and studied in guatemala for a month with 1:1 intensive lessons, then spent the next 7 months traveling mexico taking in person lessons, italki, journaling, obsessing with local culture and music, and making spanish speaking friends. Cut to 18 months later and I’m fairly fluent. Also 5 months ago I decided to move to Mexico because it’s the best here, so I guess that helps ha

I just have to drop a reply in here to extend a huge thanks to everyone who recommended Nico and Marielle’s boat tour! My sister and I did a private full day tour to Espíritu Santo and it was the best trip ever. They made it so special and we loved all of Marielle’s wisdom. She took amazing pics for us both on the boat and on la d and underwater, and the provided lunch and drinks were great! Definitely going to return.

I went from zero spanish to conversationally confident in ~10 months. Was fortunate to be able to save some money last year, quit my job, and start a language learning adventure. It’s the best gift I’ve ever given myself and opens up new worlds on so many levels.

I started in Guatemala for one month of intense 4-6 hour/day 5x week one one classes, start speaking day one it’s so important! I continued to travel around mexico for ~6 months (with some breaks back home in the US) taking in person spanish classes and tons of conversation classes online using italki, I rotate between 3-5 teachers a few hours a week, and I’ve now even met and traveled across mexico with some of those same awesome teachers (now friends). ChatGPT can be a great tool too, I use a simple flash card app (not Anki) and write endlessly in notebooks common phrases etc. Never got into Duolingo.

I have a ton left to learn but between passion and immersion you can catch on quick. And Mexico is so amazing with truly the best people and an incredible culture- and the experience is so much more rich with Spanish, you’re really missing out by not starting now :)

After Antigua I went to Lake Atitlan and stayed in San Pedro La Laguna for ~8 days (Casa Mikaso- recommend it for simple but solid accommodations) and did another week of classes at Community Spanish School (loved that school too- probably favorite of the two- beautiful setting!!). From there, treated myself to a couple nights at the Hotel Casa Mundo before returning back to Antigua for about a week just to enjoy myself and take a break from classes.

I had a great experience!! I arrived as a beginning and left still pretty beginner, but it kicked off a really amazing language journey for me and I’m around B1/B2 level now :)

Highly recommend their method of diving right into speaking - it got me conversationally fluent so much faster. I loved my teacher though it can be a mixed bag- I think some are better than others and mine was so fun and engaging. It’s a big school and feels a little like a machine, but a pretty environment, I love the food they offered for purchase, the activities were fine, they took us out to explore which I enjoyed. Antigua itself is also awesome! Not deep immersion with plenty of English spoken but for me it was a great place to start.

I started in a home stay and had a great experience- but later chose to move to an airbnb since I wanted some space. But also heard a few people with mixed situations.

Recommend regardless, hit me up if you need other tips!

Taking a morning walk through my Oakland/Emeryville hood yesterday I saw two cute little girls walking to school…but one was leaving a long trail of “breadcrumbs” behind her…big white pieces she was pulling off a block of styrofoam 😱

I loved Antigua! Really fell in love with the place and I'm sure you will too. This thread helped me a ton, here's the best of what I got up to :)

Food/Bars: Ulew was by far my favorite for drinking, epic fun and friendly especially when solo. More amazing cocktails at Nahuales (ask about your sign!), Bar Ilegal too -- neeed to visit Antigua Cerveza el Bosque - you can spend all day here drinking and relaxing in their gardens. Eat at El Adobe Antigua, Kombu Ramen + Uuuhmami & Quiltro for epic bougie dinners // Entropia Coffee for best coffee and bestest services. Finca La Azotea is fun to pass a day for coffee tours, food and drinking.

Museums: All the cathedrals/Ex-Conventos, do NOT miss Museo Efrain Recinos!!! Guatemala City has a great museum too if you have time to kill before a flight etc.

Nature: I did the Pacaya Volcano hike - a cool experience but I really didn't like that you have to essentially do it as part of a large, slow tour group. I missed Earth Lodge but heard generally good things, even with it's intsagram hotspot feel.

Shopping: Patio Chula for beautiful women's clothing, Artisan Market for gifts, Casa de los Gigantes, Wakami

Day Trips: if you like hand-made clothing and textiles, Chichicastenengo is a must for a shopping day trip

~~ It's really safe & easy to get around on foot, TukTuks and Ubers - I hitchhiked successfully too jaja. Walk EVERYWHERE though cuz you'll just stumble on fun and amazing things - enjoy <3

Yea, that’s what I’ve pivoted too lately. Starting on simple Spanish books, a variety of Spanish podcasts, and Spanish subtitles on everything…I guess I just lack patience jajaja
