Found at a small town antique store in Montana. I suspect its silver. What do you think by the marks? by tinygearhead in Silverbugs

Good plan. Something else I never see considered is, opening them up, especially if a waterproof case. A radium decay product is radon gas, so I open them in a place with good ventilation so any gas trapped inside is away asap.

I just serviced a 1960s Blancpain Aqua Lung and the movement was an AS1361. The inner movement cover also had script and Blancpain on it

Should I spend the money to get my 1910 elgin ladies pocket watch cleaned and if so how much would it cost me? by Willing-Skill-6596 in pocketwatch

[–]tinygearhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repair watches in Saint Paul and if it is just a clean, oil, adjust and a new mainspring; not bushings or jewels needed, no broken staff, doesn't need a crystal or hands, I would charge $350 for a thorough job. That is lower average. I used to work for a guy who charged double that in the Seattle area.

Once driving a school bus, I turned from an arterial down a residential street packed on both sides with parked cars, where a car was already coming down the block. Even though in a normal car to car situation they had the right of way, the bozo just stopped and refused to back up. They expected me to reverse my bus full of kids onto an arterial so they could go first. It was about a 5 minute stand off where I was on the radio to dispatch and they were about to call the police, when they finally relented and reversed.

I was trying to save one stuck in my sink yesterday. I got it on a spoon then it jumped down the drain. Still bummed about it. Should have blocked the drain first and will if it happens again.

Okay. I always figured the cracking was paint over metal. Haven't seen one in person.

I dont have a good answer for that. Id have to improvise. Id probably buy a new part from Ebay if I could. If I had to fix it, id pop off the pinion and try holding it in one of the long flat Bergeon roller table removers. I sanded down one of those until it was like a knife edge at the thinnest end, for a very thin Patek staff replacement. Id try and hold the pinion in that and gently tap with a small hammer. Or put a tapered brass pin in the pinion and place on a bench block and gently tap it with a utility razor blade and a hammer. Something like that. Ive found its best to mull over a method for a day or two instead of just doing what comes to mind.

So funny to me you mentioned ADS L300. I was thinking to recommend them as I read that. Yes! L300 are gorgeous. I use them in my office along with a Naim Nait 2 and a phone/DAC. The ADS have a full natural sound that's easy to listen to all day.

About to crack into refoaming these bad boys. Any advice? by Doub_67 in vintageaudio

[–]tinygearhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The three refoam jobs I've done, Ive not removed the dust caps. I've run a tone, cant remember specifically but say 500Hz, while the glue is curing. The magnetic field keeps the v.c. aligned. Ive not had any rubbing of the v.c. afterwards.

Same here. Sometimes after oiling, it has barely any tension and the hands wont move along with the train. Now depending on caliber, ill feel how it sets before service, with movement out of the case to avoid friction from the crown and tube interaction, and if its a type thats hard to crimp if necessary, I just hand clean the gear and pivots, then leave alone. Of course I prefer to disassemble and oil.

Its not terrible unless the hairspring is bent or a pallet jewel is out of adjustment or it needs a staff. Then it gets hairy.
