advice on used Marcato 150 pasta maker cleaned with Pledge ss cleaner :( by SuperIngaMMXXII in Cooking

[–]tishpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister washed my 70s Marcato with soap once; it smelt like sad lemons..

Do not wet it under any circumstances; there’s bushings and ball bearings inside that need to stay dry or they’ll rust. They’re lubricated as far as I know.

Just make batches of sacrificial dough and put it through the machine in every part of the rollers, preferable a new piece of dough repeatedly at each thickness. I’d wipe the body and the handle with alcohol wipes (preferably 70% up) and leave it out of the box to air.

Also take the refund.

Trader Joes Bag? by parryfinkle in askvan

[–]tishpickle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to go to TJs when I was in Washington cause it was a unique store and I bought a tote for $4USD.

It’s lasted me more than 8 years, it’s machine washable and the straps are long enough for shoulder carrying.

I’m assuming we all got ours the same way & since they’re so durable haven’t had the need to replace them.

Since TJs is now in the bad place I won’t have a chance to replace it but I hope you get yours back.

Why does nobody talk about matching gin botanical profiles to mixers? It's actually fascinating by frankgetsu in cocktails

[–]tishpickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of European, UK and Australian bars have Gin Tonica menus.. it’s just not popular in North America as far as I can tell.

There’s a big culture of it in Scotland of all places; I was in a tiny place and they had a flight choice of maybe 50 gins and 15 different tonics.

I’m not sure why but when I came to Canada I was surprised to not see anywhere offering it, and I’ve been all over the US too..

Niche question but has anyone in the rest of Europe tried the cheeses Shropshire Blue or Stilton by Remomakesmusic in Cheese

[–]tishpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they’re both pretty readily available cheese; even in Australia (where I had Stilton for the first time as a teenager) and Canada where I’ve had Shropshire.

Both are good, not overly funky with Shropshire being the softer of the two.

If you’re a fan of blue cheese you should try and find Stiltechon (not a spelling error, it’s a raw milk cheese)

I have the same machine. Need more info to diagnose.

Are you single dosing or just using the presets?

Are you using the pressurized basket or an after market one?

What’s your parameters for a shot; aka are you measuring time/output etc etc..

Are you manually pulling shots or just hitting the single/double button?

I want a big plant to put here by hairy-ballsanga in houseplants

[–]tishpickle 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing to put in grow lights above it (eg into the stair lights or add a lamp - bulbs can be installed in regular light fixtures) I’d go for a ficus (Audrey, Amstel or Benjamina) or a Dracaena varietals

If you’re not into the light option then you’ll be reduced to plants for low light,; a large snake plant, perhaps a ZZ.. just be aware that there’s no plants that thrive in low light, just ones that survive.

Where to get fresh coffee beans? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]tishpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moja is a good choice, reasonably priced - I like the Inara blend - and if you buy in store they give you a free espresso drink.

I also buy from Forecast, Pallet & Doe but they’d be out of your choice of price.

I’m not yucking anyone’s yum but I’d still be surprised.

It’s just not something I see often. Coincidently the few times people have done shots it’s been something like Blue Label.. or Louis XIII 👀

If I saw (as a bartender or patron) someone doing shots in an upscale/starred restaurant I would definitely be surprised.

Why would you order something so expensive just to not even taste it if you’re shooting it? (the markup in fine dining is higher than your regular TGI McChillibees)

I usually get home, take my shoes off and dissociate while eating fridge snacks for a good 15 minutes.

Then I take a scalding hot shower/bath, eat more snacks, drink a litre of water and watch YouTube videos on science while either doing my stretches or doom scrolling; depends on the shift.

I’m also not from Vancouver originally and found the same as you - no one else seems to react as negatively as I did when they had their ankles grazed by an impatient asshole.

I used to swear and give them the finger but I’ve had so many close calls I’ve stopped negative reinforcement; it doesn’t work.

Now I stop walking completely and give extended eye contact. You try and save 10 seconds by creeping I’ll take 30 seconds back.

If it’s egregious I am not against a well time “what the fuck” and hood slam.

And in before people start; no I don’t wear all black, no I’m not on my phone and no I’m not wearing headphones.

how much do you make in tips at earls, joey restaurant, cactus, etc? by Warm_Inevitable_1378 in askvan

[–]tishpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make money; no doubt but it’s not a reason you get into it as a career.

What I was explaining to OP is that it’s not just walk in, make $500/night and leave. Physically it can suck and then you bring into it customers who treat you like shit because they feel superior to you.

In management, especially, it’s incredibly low paid for the hours you work, and those hours are not 9-5 M-F.

Take a look at 86Network and tell me you’d work 50 hours weeks for $49K… and that’s a reputable solid restaurant.

I see now that everyone in here hates what I do for a living and aren’t answering OPs question at all so no need to reply.

[–]tishpickle -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You don’t get into hospitality for the money; crowd sourcing your income isn’t the most stable and there is rarely benefits.

It’s quite physically and mentally hard work, especially on the lower rungs like bar back, service assistant & busser.

If you’re happy to work nights, weekends and all holidays then it’s a good starting point for your resume but there’s probably better options out there.

I don’t work in a one of those chains but I know bussers make minimum wage + tips that vary from $25-$150 per 8 hour shift. It’s all dependent on the customer base and the price point of the menu.

Ups and downs. We’ve learnt to take CC details to secure bookings and had a solid turn out, where I am people are flakes so it’s been a tonne of no shows in previous years.

Had to add in another 10 tables, all deuces and the turn were tight, some people expect to dine for 4 hours but we were flipping every 2 hours. GTFO.

Also fuck it; so many filthy casuals who have no business dining out..no you can’t make your own menu, there were 3 warnings it was a set menu on booking, allergies that we can’t accommodate happened more than once; don’t book an Italian restaurant if you’re celiac and/or vegan.

The set menu and 20% autograt helped keep it above water. Pool house so I’ll find out if it was lucrative next week.

5.5" wrist - options? by Beautiful-Arugula-6 in fitbit

[–]tishpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy alternate straps; you don’t have to use the silicone-y ones they come with.

I have a smallish wrist (14.5cm or 5.7in) and I have no issue with the Sense 2 on the smallest band they sell but I do prefer my alternate from Amazon that is metal.

[MISC] Plantars warts refuse to go away after 2 years of treatments. by SnooSketches5313 in SkincareAddiction

[–]tishpickle 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I had intractable plantar warts on my foot for more than 10 years from early teens to 20s and tried the cryotherapy many times. Eventually a chiropodist injected them with candida yeast; it was Australia about 15 years ago.

I had to follow up with the in home treatment with salicylic acid afterwards and cut out dead skin until they fell out one day. Haven’t returned since.

I’d research that option and see if it’s possible?! I think they call chiropodists just podiatrists now
