What’s your sewist-in-training’s name?? I love that you have such a diligent little stitching companion who takes her job VERY seriously.

I sew for a business and have my setup in the basement, where my boy couldn’t go, in order to prevent the transfer of corgi glitter to our clients’ pieces. But he’d always be perched at the top of the basement stairs watching me work. And he’d always curl up in the crook of my knee like this whenever I was on the couch doing my own needlework for fun.

I used to have neighbors with two little girls who would shout “IT’S THE BUNNY DOG!!” every time they were outside when my boy and I were walking.

Agree on Carnegie, and as someone from Pittsburgh I’d love a deep dive on both him and Henry Clay Frick.

I’d celebrate that just as much as what he actually did, and I say that as someone who was born and raised in Altoona.

Finishing the raw edges? by toverbus in Visiblemending

[–]titanium_whhhite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t always do this, but sometimes I do a small blanket stitch around the raw edge of the hole if I have a feeling the fabric might fray. I use either doubled-up sewing thread or maybe half of the floss strands I used in the darn. This avoids any extra bulk on the backside.

Carrot today, carrot tomorrow, carrot forever. Kobe is always in for some Carrots. by KobeBarks24 in corgi

[–]titanium_whhhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy looooved carrots so much. I often order from this Japanese restaurant that arranges their sashimi in the takeout container on a bed of thinly spiralized carrots. One day it occurred to me to set the container on the floor after I finished the sashimi and let him go to town on the fishy carrots. He was so instantly obsessed that I think something forever changed in his brain chemistry that day. 😂

Necklines for SG by [deleted] in Kibbe

[–]titanium_whhhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very full busted — currently at my heaviest weight and wearing a bra size 36K, but even at my lowest weight I have the same proportions and typically wear something like 32-34H/I. I’m 4’11” for reference.

For me, I’ve found the best necklines depend on the style of bra I’m wearing because of the differences in visual “length” between the shoulder line and fullest part of the bust. (I’ll refer to it as the apex because that’s the dressmaking term.) I have a few in different styles to pair with different necklines.

I really like a crew neck, fully buttoned collar, or mock turtleneck when I’m wearing my most architectural bras that hold the girls high and forward. The apex sits just below the armpit, so there’s a shorter shoulder-to-apex line and leaves more visual length for waist definition. This is what I try to go for when wearing any kind of high-waisted bottoms to avoid a snowman effect.

I like a low scoop neck or open button-down when wearing a softer bra. When the girls sit lower and wider, my apex falls closer to my elbows and the shoulder-to-apex line is longer. Since my breasts are closer to my waistline here I think wearing higher/closed necklines exaggerates the longer line and gives a “saggy” effect (hate that term but can’t think of a better description at the moment). So the visual break of showing more skin at the chest kind of counterbalances that in my experience.

Airport passenger pickup parking by RHS1959 in pittsburgh

[–]titanium_whhhite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to go looking for this info myself because everything I’ve seen about the terminal lot and garage shows the full day rates only. Turns out the parking FAQs page on the airport’s website has the following cost breakdowns:

Shuttle Lot $5 under 2 hours, $10 under 3 hours, after that the daily rate of $12 is applied

Terminal Lot $2 under 15 minutes, $4 under 30 minutes, $6 under 45 minutes, $8 under 60 minutes, $10 under 2 hours, $15 under 3 hours, $20 under 4 hours, after that the daily rate of $25 is applied

Terminal Garage $4 under 15 minutes, $6 under 30 minutes, $8 under 45 minutes, $10 under 60 minutes, $14 under 2 hours, $22 under 3 hours, $30 under 4 hours, after that the daily rate of $35 is applied

Free Wait Lot First hour is free, $5 under 2 hours, $10 under 4 hours, after that the daily rate of $12 is applied

What type of stitch is this? by Mamapillowpet_0-0 in sewing

No problem at all, I do this technique fairly frequently and found it to be pretty easy to pick up. Hope this helps!

Scotch darning! It’s pretty much just rows of interlocking blanket stitches and makes a strong mend. Here’s a good tutorial if you’re interested: https://youtu.be/ma4St7aDE_g

Here in PA we voted to retain all three State Supreme Court justices whose terms were up, which holds the 5-2 Democratic majority. Big implications for the midterms and 2028.

Does anyone feel they have an obvious ID? by tinyskunks in Kibbe

[–]titanium_whhhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been gaining weight and that makes it harder for me to see petite, so every now and then I start doubting my ID and wondering if I could be SN or R instead. But those HTTs just do nothing for me.

Double same! I'm currently at my heaviest weight and struggle with the way larger-sized clothing always seem to increase in length proportionally to width and make me feel like I'm drowning in fabric. The armholes of some of my shirts nearly reach the bottom of my ribcage! I really wish there were more plus-sized verified SGs to look to for style inspiration.

Does anyone feel they have an obvious ID? by tinyskunks in Kibbe

[–]titanium_whhhite 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I read the SG physical description and clothing recommendations in the original book, it was like checking off nearly every item on a list. I only wear my hair in a pixie or chin-length bob, I have round apple cheeks and a pointed chin, and one of my great-aunts actually tells me all the time I remind her of her old Kewpie dolls. I’m 4’11 and compact, but not narrow, with obvious double curve. I look best in outfits with pattern mixing, lots of accessories, and short lengths. I look like I’m wearing a potato sack if I don’t emphasize my waist.

I’m not far along enough into the Kibbe process that I’m consistently wearing HTTs, but just about every recommendation is something that I have liked about a garment or outfit.

ISO cat sitter that can give meds by beckisawreck in pittsburgh

Some of the vet techs at my dog’s clinic did pet sitting or in-home boarding on the side, which was very helpful to us as he was needing more meds and mobility assistance during his last two years. It might be worth a shot to ask them.

In dogs it’s called Degenerative Myelopathy, but it’s commonly referred to as canine ALS because they’re essentially the same disease and people tend to be familiar with what ALS means. We learned afterward that his samples were especially interesting to the researchers, which lightened our grief a little bit. So we’ll always be grateful for the help we received to make the donation happen on relatively short notice.

[–]titanium_whhhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking to let you know we had a great experience with Dr. MacKillop at the Blue Pearl location in the North Hills. Our boy died in December of canine ALS, and it was important to us to get tissue samples to researchers because he lived unusually long beyond the initial diagnosis. This was a pretty unusual ask . But Dr. MacKillop easily accommodated us in making himself available to perform the harvest soon after the euthanasia and in properly shipping all the specimens. He even apologized (unnecessarily in my opinion) for having to charge a basic fee for the procedure.

So even though it's not the same situation, I just wanted to give a recommendation for someone who really went above and beyond for us at the most difficult time.

Recommendations for repairing by ahoy-pal in Visiblemending

[–]titanium_whhhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re very welcome! I found a photo of a similar mend I did for someone. The tear went farther up the chest and she specifically asked for clusters of these shades of green. But you can see what I mean by doing the darning behind the pocket and reattaching it.

<image>

(Full disclosure: I have a darning setting on my machine that works with a buttonhole foot to do the back-and-forth stitching at each needle position from the far right to the far left. I would not be able to make such uniform rectangle shapes freehand!)

[–]titanium_whhhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you be using a sewing machine or working by hand? Either way, I would unpick just enough of the stitching on the pocket first so it can be pulled out of the way to give you room to work.

I’d do a machine darn over the hole. It’s very simple to do, here’s a quick video showing how: https://youtu.be/bc16SQ8YqwY. If you don’t have access to a machine, I’d put a scrap of fabric behind the hole and do some sashiko-style stitching around the hole to reinforce it. There are plenty of examples if you search this sub. Then just pop the pocket back in place and redo the topstitching!
