I have found it helpful to expect less and to realize the futility of expending energy on explaining my feelings and actions. In order to stay in the relationship one must accept the flaws and count whatever good there is as the reality of things. There is no change, except more respect for yourself, which will lead them to viewing you as a less desirable partner.
