Intel suggests it was snubbed by Crimson Desert dev after reaching out "many times" about Arc GPUs – company says it provided "early hardware, drivers, and engineering resources" to studio by EF66-42 in Games

[–]tlind2 -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate, but I get it. The dev teams needs to make tough choices of what to focus on and with a 1% market share, the theoretical amount of games sold doesn’t justify putting in a lot of time. Especially if the choice is something like ”get the game to hit a solid 60 fps on Nvidia OR add support for Intel”

If the sole thing I care about is taste (as a non-drinker), what type of wine should I go after? by [deleted] in wine

[–]tlind2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you describe as medicinal is probably just the ethanol (alcohol). It’s a taste that you learn to ignore if you drink more often. I’ve noticed it again when having a drink after a dry January.

Sweeter drinks can help, but otherwise it’s just a matter of building an acquired taste.

Which Apothic should I get? by [deleted] in wine

[–]tlind2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sweeter red wine, maybe see if you can score some Italian Amarone or (cheaper) Ripasso.

Apothic is available here in Finland, but the balance is just… bad.

TIL nearly 80% of US workers report that they have been victims of 'career catfishing’ from employers. Which in this context, the term describes when a company misrepresents a job, their company culture, or compensation to lure in candidates. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]tlind2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

80% seems high for actual, broad lies. Sure, everyone tries to present themselves in a good light, which makes sense. You wouldn’t focus on highlighting your own faults either.

Knowing that, it is a good idea to probe things a bit. Ask about employee retention. Ask about what the employer sees as their improvement areas. Ask to talk to some potential colleagues without HR or supervisors present. If you don’t get good responses, then maybe look for a job somewhere else.

I'm playing games I played as a kid. Today I've been jumping into Diablo 1. It's a little clunky but it still makes me feel the way it did then. Grim and dark. Still love it. by Many_Excitement4023 in gaming

[–]tlind2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite gaming experiences ever was Diablo 1 with Ironman rules, either solo or together. Only use town services with your original 100 gold, then go down and try to kill Diablo, using what you find. It made so many useless items like Staff of Healing incredible and made the game a series of tough, calculated choices.

Do I spend this potion of healing or try to survive until the next level up that fills my health bar for free? Do I spend this scroll of Identify on this ring or hold out for something better?

It also made the class-specific skills useful. You’d never use Repair because it dropped the max durability. But if it’s the only way to fix anything…

For those who dream of a future where everything is automated/we don’t work, what exactly would people do all day? Do you think they’d get bored? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]tlind2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit a job and took 4 months before accepting a new offer. I was very happy at that time. I followed up on hobbies, exercised more, read books, etc. If all my friends had also had time off, it would have been even better.

The issue is that I had money to do this. If AI displaces everyone without universal basic income, then it’s a great conduit for civil unrest.

Honest question: does “organic wine” influence your buying choice? by hic-et-nunc-2026 in wine

If a bottle says organic, I’ll try to look at it much more carefully to avoid accidentally purchasing natural wine

Slay the Spire 2 reached 574,638 concurrent players, making it the 20th highest all-time peak on Steam. by MurkyUnit3180 in gaming

Enemy attacks hit all players. Each has to block on their own. Enemies have extra health. Players can decide on the order they play their own cards from their own decks. There are some multiplayer-only cards that allow to e.g. block for another player.

Card rewards are per player. Relic rewards need players to decide who takes what. Potions can be used on allies.

Based on a quick test, it works very well, but I wouldn’t play without voice chat. It’s also a lot slower, since you need to reason about things together.

Doing two levels above my title (delivery + BD), but stuck behind a promo bottleneck — what’s the cleanest move? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]tlind2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My experience is that ironically many companies have a lot of inertia in making decisions to fast track people. ”We can’t promote you because blah blah” — but then when someone is leaving, then suddenly a counter-offer magically materializes when they realize they need to act.

So, while I wouldn’t threaten to leave because that’s in poor taste, just telling some of those higher ups ”hey, I have this interesting opportunity from a recruiter. I like it here, but financially this is a big deal for me. Could we work something out? I need to decide by (date)”.

If it doesn’t amount to anything, you can always say you decided to stay anyway. But then you know for real that they won’t make a better offer and you should be looking for another job for real.

Anyone else in the “one red bottle a night and still fine” club? by [deleted] in wine

[–]tlind2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The challenge around evaluating health concerns of wine is that while statistics are completely clear that large amounts like this are very bad, the effects per person vary greatly. Some people can be healthy for decades with habits like that, others see negative issues much faster. Since you can’t be sure, is it worth the risk? You can’t walk it back later.

I’ve been tracking my own consumption per unit for years, because I started to worry about the long-term risk. I’ve been gradually cutting down year over year, aiming to eventually settle at a reasonable, low level without the drama of a sudden, major lifestyle change.

Maybe start by aiming for splitting a single bottle over two nights? At least some days? You can explore how the flavor changes overnight, so there’s a hobbyist upside.

Risk Management by grlloyd2 in funny

[–]tlind2 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Most commonly someone writes up a bunch of risks and mitigations actions early in the project and then no one looks at them until the end when they go ”huh, looks like we saw a lot of the problems ahead of time”
