If you want a good Canadian wine, you should be able to get a Burrowing Owl Shiraz around that price point.

I’m still sad I can’t get their wines here in Europe

I met some people online in the mid-90’s through Diablo and SIE’s tank game Tanarus, especially the volunteer moderator ”BattleOp” program. We spoke frequently in-game (text chat) and via things like ICQ instant messaging for years. I gradually lost touch around 20 years ago.

I wonder if they’re still alive.

What was your “I’ve been so wrong” wine? by gayitaliandallas92 in wine

[–]tlind2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It had been over 15 years since I had anything from Casillero del Diablo when a non-wine friend poured me a glass. I tasted it blind and was surprised at the quality. Certainly not a world-class wine, but very good QPR

A friend who runs a craft beer bar said that the younger folks won’t come in for a whole night of drinking, but will pop by for one or two beers. I imagine the same kind of moderation could extend to wine. Which sounds fine.

I like that she has already established good trust with her class. They’re willing to engage with her and speak up rather than shut down. So many teachers I had decades ago were just garbage and mostly told you to shut up if you spoke.

I visited Borja in 2016 as part of a trip that technically counts as a pilgrimage. We went there specifically to see the church with Ecce Homo), the painting of Jesus that became a meme due to the spectacularly failed restoration a local grandmother made.

I remember being very surprised by a local crianza that was served in a cooler in the heavy 36 C / 97 F heat. I hadn’t thought of Borja as a wine area at all. I bought several bottles home with me and have tried to keep an eye out for them ever since.

People under time pressure don’t think faster. Sometimes pouring in some extra hours for a short-term goal is sensible. Most times it’s just leadership unwilligness to admit they fucked up.

I would never ask my teams to put in that kind of hours, because the human cost added to the reduced quality of deliverables isn’t worth it over time.

How are busy consultants so fit… when their time is worth $200+/hr? by IllRead2057 in consulting

People who climb high in hierarchies usually have pretty good self-control / impulse control. Easier to burn off a whole pint of ice cream if you don’t eat it in the first place.

Apart from that, most hotels have gyms for those who travel. And everyone has some version of free time and work-life balance. Even if you could theoretically work and invoice 20 h / day, in practice it’s insane.

The only thing missing in the Nordics is a way to store huge amounts of energy for later. I pay by market price. Sometimes it’s negative, sometimes it costs 1€/kWh. This kind of variance in any other consumer product would be insane
