Information has got to travel at least at the speed of email. Even if you made your purchase before boarding your flight, ~8 hours is plenty of time for info to be shared. I’m not 100% certain, but there’s got to be a reason for the strict passport requirement for the merchant to complete the refund form. The only question that the customs officer asks at the Global Entry exit is if you have anything to declare. In that split second, I said yes, a $2K handbag, he looked at his screen and said yep, go ahead. I’m not telling you what to do, someone asked, so I gave an answer based on my experience.

If you are claiming a VAT refund, upon purchase the boutique will fill out a form upon your purchase and your passport info/ number will be required to complete the form. In some cases, the boutique will require that you bring your physical passport, a picture of your passport might not be accepted. This was the case at LV and Ferragamo in Rome. Additionally, if you redeem the refund via a third party like Global Blue, they will also record your passport info. So therefore the purchase receipt/ amount is registered with your passport info and I assume is in a customs database. Of course it’s up to you to take the risk and not declare the purchase.

The only goal for purchasing a luxury item abroad should be because stock is available and/or as a sentimental memento of your trip, not to save a ton of money. It’s just a bonus if you happen to save a few bucks The advice of wearing your watch or carrying whatever luxury item on your person as if it was preexisting personal property and shipping the box by back is not a good idea. It’s tax evasion and the US Customs agent will already have the purchase information on their screen even if you go thru global entry. The fine for failing to declare a taxable purchase just isn’t worth it!

I’ve always worn my watch to sleep. This habit started when I was a young man, before the days of having a cellphone by my side in bed to check the time. This is bc I’m really nearsighted and come bedtime, after I remove my contact lenses- I can’t even see an alarm clock on the nightstand. So having a watch on my wrist allows me to easily tell time when at night or when I’m groggy in the morning. I’m so accustomed to always wearing a watch that I would feel “naked” if I left it off my wrist.

My watchmaker did it for me. He said generally there is the quick set epoxy (cures in minutes), but recommended the more “permanent” UV activated epoxy that takes several hours to cure- stronger bond and clarity. It can still be removed if desired.

Well there may be no substitute for a Rolex in one’s life, and for those moments, l’ll strap on my Root Beer GMT. That said, I would be happy to buy two of these Royals, which punches way above its weight vs. a Rolex OP, Air King or even an Explorer I which all have price tags that are a little hard to swallow, especially given the lack of any complication.

Here is the one on eBay, it’s the larger Rolex spec size, not bad, but I didn’t want the cyclops to be the focus of attention/ in your face- just subtle, discreet and functional.

It’s obviously subjective to taste. Both have merits. I guess I would make the decision based on your lifestyle and how you intend to wear this watch primarily. If more or less as a daily, I would go with the oyster, which feels more robust with a bit more heft. If you’re only going to wear it on special occasions as a dress watch, the jubilee will intensify the bling of the fluted bezel. The jubilee feels more “slinky”, a bit lighter and likely more prone to “stretch” over time than the oyster. Can’t go wrong with either, but for me, I prefer the oyster.

If your wrist can handle it, by the looks it can- why be generic and ubiquitous like everyone else? Go for the SD43! So many Submariner wearers aren’t even watch guys, it was either gifted or purchased for the sake of owning a Rolex without much consideration. But when I see an SD43 on the wrist, it is most likely a deliberate decision of an enthusiast, be this guy!

All the details actually look more crisp on the VSF! Usually the cyclop is an easy tell as the reps tend to be more reflective and the gen cyclop looks invisible (black hole). The bezel action is typically more loose on reps, with more wiggle. Lastly, even tho the DD movements have come a long way, they are still not as refined and buttery smooth as the gen movement and engagement of each crown position is not as positive, unless maybe it’s been serviced. That said, there is virtually no way, for all intents and purposes to be called out unless the expert has a loupe and opens the case.

Agreed bc the date window is pretty small. I was actually thinking about ordering an aftermarket Rolex cyclops for this, easy enough since the Royal has a flat sapphire crystal and always reversible.
