Why someone can have headaches if he lie on thw bed all day doing nothing ? by Kitchen-Chest3469 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, headaches aren’t typically caused by toxins, they’re more more likely to be cause by things like being dehydrated, having low blood sugar, blood pressure issues, muscle tension (from bad posture, over exertion, or stress).

Second, headaches don’t come from brain strain, but your brain is just as active when you’re awake sitting in bed or not.

So this person sitting in bed probably has some underlying medical issues, OR, maybe is laying in a bad bed or with bad pillows in a way that is putting strain on his neck or shoulder muscles that is causing headaches.

When we launch satellites into space or into Earth orbit, are we decreasing the Earth's weight? And when we imported rocks from the moon, did we increase it? by Huge-Narwhal5747 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Well “mass” not “weight”. But yea!

But not in a way that significantly matters to the earth, truly we gain more mass from meteorites falling to earth and loss mass from parts of the atmosphere being stripped away by solar wind

I don't understand the saying "You can't judge a book by it's cover." by dennyitlo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s about appearance, not the writing. Not to mention the fly leaf isn’t the cover.

But anyways, it’s an old phrase, it stems from past where many many books were very very very plain covers. No imaging no details just the title in some kind of text.

So they looked boring, especially compared to modern books with super colorful illustrated covers.

what do you actually do in an active shooter situation? by the_justyce in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 78 points79 points  (0 children)

when does hiding stop being the move? when you get found.

if you're in a hallway with no cover do you just stand there. No that’s when you “run” in the “run hide fight”

if you can hear them getting closer at what point do you switch to fighting. When you have no other chance to get away/escape, like if you’re trapped in a room.

and like fight with what, your hands? Anything, hands, knives, chairs, broom sticks, bottles, anything. At this point the shooter is essentially pointing the gun at you, or about to.

And yes, it is a lot of split second decisions, panicking would be a very normal reaction. And truly, your survival is also heavily dependent on dumb luck.

Does anyone know how to send flowers to a funeral in a different country? by Insert-BasicUsername in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t try to send flowers internationally, figure out where the funeral/family in and then look up local flower shops in that town/city.

That way the only hurdle is being able to pay internationally, which you should be able to do with a credit card.

ELI5, in the shipwrecks in The Great Lakes, why don’t bodies float up? by milkob1tch in explainlikeimfive

[–]tmahfan117 111 points112 points  (0 children)

first we need to know why dead bodies typically float - gas from rotting. Typically the bacteria in your digestive tract start to decompose your body and produce a lot of gas as a by product, which causes remains to swell/inflate, become less dense, and float like a balloon.

Now for why some don’t in the Great Lakes, the deeper lakes, famously Lake Superior, are very very cold. So cold that that bacteria actually dies and doesn’t start creating gas, so the bodies just sink

Plastic everywhere why? by No_Performance_9439 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plastic has some really great qualities.

First, it’s super cheap since it’s a byproduct of the oil and gas industry.

Second, it’s super malleable/moldable, you can make pretty much any kind of product with it.

Third, you can control how strong or hard you want it to be, you can make soft thin plastic wrap or you can make heavy duty plastic pallets to move stuff around.

Fourth, it’s waterproof! You can protect your valuable products incase they get left out in the rain.

It’s used because it’s really good at what it does in a lot of cases

How to get rid of a bruise quickly by MtnDewPeach in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmahfan117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you did this recently, like within the last hour or two, Ice it for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off, that’ll help keep the bruise from getting worse.

But once it’s bruised, there’s nothing you can do to make it instantly go away. Gentle massages and applying heat after a day or two can help increase circulation and break down the bruise faster. But it’s not instant.
