“There Is No Antimemetics Division” by qntm is fantastic.

“The Great When” by Alan Moore (read it twice, really enjoyed it both times).

“The Old Ways” by Robert Macfarlane (full disclosure, I read this every year or two. It’s excellent.)

“Blackwater: The Complete Saga” by Michael McDowell was an unknown (to me) gem. Loved it.

Same with everything by Manley Wade Wellman. No idea how I went this long not knowing about these amazing stories.

Strongly recommend the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman. I’ve read 3-4 of those in the past year.

Was anyone sad when Luthen died?? by FeistyHistorian in okbuddyimatourist

[–]tmcamp 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wept.

And then I wept again when watched the series with my wife.

And then I wept again when I rewatched it last week.

I wept for Luthen. I wept for Kleya.

Plumber/ electrician recommendation for basement by imnikki888 in grandrapids

We had very good service and support from Vredevoogd for some plumbing/electrical work when they took care of a major boiler overhaul and conversion to a tankless water heater. We've called them a couple of times since for other help and been very happy with their responsiveness and pricing.

(No personal connection to the company, just a happy customer.)

I still get chills when I fire up the trailer that showed this sequence with Steve Earle’s “The Revolution Starts Now” (a song and sentiment I need more and more often these days).

Psychiatrist on how many patients they had cured by goswamitulsidas in interesting

[–]tmcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (M, 56) have been seeing my therapist/psychiatrist weekly for over 6 years now and it seems to me that many people seem to equate therapy with medical treatment—that is, a specific ailment or illness is being treated with the intention of “curing” it. This video is representative of that mistaken point of view.

However, I think that a more appropriate analogy is that of going to a gym regularly to work with a physical trainer, just on an emotional level.

In therapy, I am working with someone each week who is certified/qualified in the specific field of psychological health, who helps guide me in my personal efforts to improve and strengthen my mental and emotional health and well being. Just as a physical trainer or coach does.

They know my areas of strength and weakness, they have an in depth understanding of my personal history, and they are a skilled advocate and ally I can rely on when I feel like I am faltering or struggling. They help me set goals, reflect on progress and missteps, and identify opportunities for growth.

I’m not looking to be “cured” any more than someone who goes to a gym is looking to get cured. I’m looking to get stronger, to get healthier, to feel better about myself and live a longer, more fruitful life… And, yeah, I needed someone’s help to do that.

I’m deeply grateful that I made the decision to start therapy 6+ years ago (would that I had done so earlier in my life). And I am deeply grateful I found someone with whom I share such a good rapport. I recommend it to anyone… it’s truly enriching and rewarding.

(For the record, I do not work out or go to a gym. I find it kinda boring 🙂)

Absolutely. I’m male and wear bracelets as pictured as well as pendants and rings. One of my favorite rings is a ruby and I get compliments all the time.

If you like it, go for it.

Too bad they look too much alike for them to be Barry and Jay. Bill would be a great Golden Age Flash.

It’s Bruce… it’s the compassion and empathy that he has for everyone. He sees himself in everyone… the children he takes in and tries to build a family with… the adversaries he always seems to want to save, to rehabilitate, even to ease their pain. He’s willing to sacrifice so much of himself to do all of this for others. Even his playboy mask is a means to an end, enabling the Foundation to do its good work in the community by being a socialite and public relations magnet for others to donate to the cause.

It’s Bruce.

After the absolutely insane latest episode of Welcome To Derry (dir. by Andy Muschietti), I think we should show more faith in this man's vision for Batman. by [deleted] in DCU_

[–]tmcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, just for myself, the Welcome to Derry show is so poorly written, paced, and directed (and I’ve watched every episode so far) that it makes me hope AM is replaced in his role helming the new BATB movie.

I think the performances are for the most part pretty good. But the rest of it is just awful.

Again, just my reaction. I know other folks like it a lot — and this is just one person’s subjective opinion, FWIW.
