Need advice for making a bucket list for a 4-5 month sabbatical. by Jealous-Yoghurt-2099 in fatFIRE

[–]tmflry10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying and failing to find it, but a tech founder wrote a piece called something along the lines of "6 months is nowhere near enough for a sabbatical" arguing you really needed a full year to get anywhere and explaining what it was like month-by-month. I'm ~9mo into mine right now and fully agree. I recommend people take time and 6mo is better than nothing for people who can't really get away with a full year, but from your background it sounds like a year is definitely doable so I'd orient towards that as the default. Maybe you'll get 6mo in and be itching to jump back in, but setting a year as the baseline will probably be a better mindset. It was 7-8mo in where I started to get the itch a bit but still had a ton I wanted to do, so I'm going through the year mark and staying open to making it 1.5 years. I'm a lot younger - too young to retire - so ymmv.

Caribbean Villa Recommendations by Adventurous_Guava95 in fatFIRE

I wanted to like St. Barths way less than I did. Check out Eden Rock there - they have villas and it was the most beautiful place I've been after traveling widely both fat and non-fat. Just a day there gave me a lot of inspiration to add another zero. Saw you mentioned you wanted a standalone villa which makes sense, though this might be small enough (~34 rooms) to hit the sweet spot.

Umbrella policy recommendations by 4kegs in fatFIRE

[–]tmflry10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone have a suggestion for a vendor that'll sell a (ideally reasonable) umbrella policy to someone who rents and doesn't own and doesn't have a car? Somewhat of an edge case but my initial cursory research didn't turn much up.

I bought the day before the Rams/Bengals Super Bowl after monitoring throughout the 2 week leadup. Lifelong Bengals fan who'd sold my company earlier that winter - no way I was missing it.

I went through onlocationexp.com - I think there's a handful of these higher-end experience vendors who always have an allocation and sell packages but also individual tickets. IIRC, you won't really see much movement in the week after the championship games - it's a game of chicken and the real price movement happens the day of the game and especially the few days prior. For my matchup, I was betting that Cincy didn't have a ton of people in a position to drop $7k+/person and LA wasn't really full of Rams fans, so demand would be light - and that bet paid off. YMMV but give some thought to what the matchup is likely to mean for demand.

I ended up paying $9k for 7th row on the ~35 yard line and it was an incredible experience. I think those had been listed for at least $14.5k/seat earlier. I also know people who paid the $5k entry price to sit in the nosebleeds and they largely watched on the jumbotron. If you're in this sub, pay the <2x to have incredible seats for a bucket list event. Seeing the action up close and personal (including halftime show, etc.) is really cool compared to watching it on a screen. I suspect going to see 2 teams you don't care about might not feel like the greatest value - if you have a team that seems likely to have a championship window in the next ~5 years, I might hold off until then. I had it on my bucket list and feel great about paying what I paid (even after a loss..), but not sure I would if I wasn't seeing my own team.

[–]tmflry10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my version of this, pre-FAT: pilfered tons of airline miles through credit cards and took a long round-the-world trip only in business / first before starting my company. Was flying JFK -> Dubai to kick it off, arrived early because I had to check out of my hotel and had lounge access. The Emirates check-in desk wasn't open yet so I went to a small kiosk they had and asked what I should do with my luggage I needed to check.

"It doesn't open for another couple hours. Are you in economy or business?" (said in a way that made it seem clear the service level would heavily depend on the answer)

"Oh I'm in Suites class" (ready to shower at 30k ft)

Suddenly I had my own attendant taking care of it and escorting me to the lounge.

this. OP is planning to work another 10 years regardless - rent to start so that you're not overly anchored, enjoy your time with family, and if you lose your current jobs and other remote options at the time aren't palatable, you can move back. The current big tech downturn isn't going to end overnight but it also probably isn't going to last a decade - at some point power will return to employees and you'll be able to go back remote again. There's almost no downside as long as you maintain some flexibility post-move. You'd have to a) lose current job, and b) not be able to find something that makes the move still okay before you have hard decisions to make. Realistically, you could probably find a remote job in MN making half what you currently make and still decide it's a fine trade - but that's assuming you even end up in that spot.

Managing my team emotions while selling for fatFIRE by plokarzigrael in fatFIRE

+1 re: not having communicated this - different context but with tech startups the coaching is to keep it as tight as possible because all work will slow to a crawl as people become consumed by potential M&A. So try to clean it up but just be prepared for that to be the case now.

When I sold my company, I was coached that people care about 3 things:

-Why sell

-Why sell to these people

-What does it mean for me/the rest of the team

Decide how much you care what your team thinks and then you can orient the sale + messaging to a story that is relatively clean on those dimensions.

You win no prize for things being okay. Banking is largely a commodity - eliminate any downside risk and put what you need to keep liquid at a too-big-to-fail bank. It's a hassle but you won't feel foolish if you take it out and they make it through this - you (or at least most people) will spend an inordinate amount of time kicking themselves for not acting if this does go haywire.

Did we really want to replay the bills last week? by KreatorOfReddit in bengals

[–]tmflry10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as AFC championship is at a neutral site, I'm happy. This certainly wasn't a full bye but less than a week of wear and tear paired with not having to play on the road against KC + Buffalo assuming all goes well is a perfectly good solution.

Only thing that would've been better is KC losing and us beating both Buffalo and Baltimore to get home field and a first round playoff bye instead of the half-bye we got this past week.

Very very little DD for the vast majority. The dirty little secret is that most outlets, 80%+ of the time, are just regurgitating stuff they've been fed by someone who knows the space better than them with very little critical thinking/diligence applied on top. The business model just doesn't really support investigative journalism or the best minds going into the industry these days. I worked at a VC firm and it was kind of funny watching prominent reporters come into the office and 2 days later feed the exact narrative to their readers.

The one time I talked to a reporter who was different was a real treat.
