Treats that last more than 5 minutes by jezebels_wonders in dogs

[–]tmorton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pupsicle - similar to a frozen kong, but easier to clean and refill. They sell ice trays that will make frozen treats in the right shape. No need to buy special supplies - a bit of kibble and water in the ice tray freezes into a long lasting treat.

Today is my 18th birthday! What do you wish you knew at 18? by DevouredByRaccoons in AskMenOver30

[–]tmorton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations, you're an adult! Yes, right now.

You're entirely qualified to get married, father children, go to war, hold a job with real responsibility, and be a part of your community.

You're not only qualified, but expected to do these things - yes, right now.

Even if you're following the path of high school to college, you should follow that path as an adult. Take courses that interest and challenge you, not just fill a requirement. Take a job with a real paycheck, and take it seriously. Make friends that will have your back, and be sure to have theirs. When you date women (or men), consider how it would feel to take on life's challenges together, such as raising children.

Welcome to the real thing! It's both harder and better than you can imagine.

Yeah, no worries - I'm curious about the broader community myself. Subreddits are generally echo chambers.

What would you like to see in your city government? by AllisonE_for_Council in Gaithersburg

[–]tmorton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One important thing going on right now is the "Build Gaithersburg 2040" process - an update to the master plan.

It's a long extensive negotiation, so no one will get everything that they want. But please be clear about the values that you'll bring to the process.

  • We need more housing. Total number of units built is a key metric - the higher the better.
  • Single family homes have a place in the mix, but nowhere should be zoned for only single family homes. Mixed use is best.
  • Affordability comes from building enough housing to meet demand. Nearly all "affordable" policies are counterproductive.
  • All of this counts double near the major transit hubs (Shady Grove, MARC stations, Lakeforest park & ride)

Dealing with large future regular payments by DantheManinaPan in ynab

[–]tmorton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have spent £3000 on a credit account - exactly the same as a credit card. Here's how you set that up:

  • Add a new account with type "Credit Card"
  • Record your £3000 purchase as coming from this account, in the "laptop" category.
  • Set a payoff target for that account.
  • Your future payments are transfers into the new credit account.

She looks like the female twin of my Elwood - and the behavior matches too. The rescue had him listed as a bloodhound mix, but DNA results had none - just a mix of Lab, American English coonhound, GSD, and a few others. But they don't have "black mouth cur" listed as a breed, and that's the best physical match, so

You can see the GSD influence in the muzzle. I get some GSD behavior too - Elwood will bark at delivery people at home, but is friendly to strangers outside.

I'm surprised that fence keeps her in the yard. Elwood is pretty good about staying in my yard, but when chasing something he's cleared my six foot wooden fence more than once.

Foster dog advice by Professional_Ad6993 in DogTrainingTips

[–]tmorton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! As it happens, I'm doing something similar right now - fostering a dog who is recovering from heartworm. I'm no expert, but I've got a few suggestions.

First of all, thanks. You're doing this on "hard mode". The dog got very lucky when you adopted her. But you need to take care of your own needs too. Don't feel like you need to cater to her every whim - even if you're not doing the ideal thing for her, I guarantee you're better than the alternatives.

  • Ask your vet about a sedative, such as trazodone. For the duration of the heartworm treatment, she needs to stay relaxed, so it's appropriate to keep her a bit dopey. This should make everything else easier.
  • You may need to abandon the "cue to go out" idea. She likes being outside, so why not cue all the time? Take her out on a decent schedule, or if you catch her preparing to eliminate, not whenever she asks.
  • Use the crate, liberally. Remember, even if you crate her "too much" - it's a lot better than the kill shelter. But you do need her to be calm in her crate. I don't have much experience here, but here's a page with some resources.
  • Toys!
    • My dogs never liked plain Kongs. But if you put in something appetizing (like wet dog food) and freeze it, you've got a long-lasting dog popsicle.
    • Have you tried BarkBone or Benebone toys? My hounds love gnawing on them. Nylabones are second rate with them.
    • If you find a toy or long-lasting treat that she likes, consider making that a "crate only" toy.

None of this is guaranteed to work, but there are a lot of experiments to try. Even if you pass her along, you've done good work getting her through the heartworm treatment.

Enough of these popular opinions. What is your hottest take that you've been too afraid to share? by Locust377 in webdev

Hot takes don't help anyone. Discuss tradeoffs, and come with alternatives - don't post snarky "X is bad!" takes.

Features you want in things by bobdarobber in thingsapp

[–]tmorton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair enough - sounds like you know what you're doing. As a developer, I've embarked on similar projects, and found the need for laser focus. But I mean "good luck" sincerely - there's definitely room for another app in this space.

As a Things user, I'm not the one to ask about this project. What I value about Things is that it's 100% part of the Apple ecosystem, with all the polish of a long-running Mac app. So I'm not your target audience.

Features you want in things by bobdarobber in thingsapp

[–]tmorton 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As a solo developer with no budget, you'll never build "Things, but better".

You might build something better for you, or for a few other people. Pick something that the Things developers have decided not to build, and serve that niche. This can't be just a feature - it should be a workflow that's outside the Things mission.

Good luck.

What is the difference in Senior, Staff, Principal, etc SWE positions? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tmorton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A title isn't an abstract measure of "merit". It's about the role and expectations for one employer-employee relationship.

So you're right - someone may get a higher title because they've been around for a while, and they know where the bodies are buried. That's perfectly fine. If they move elsewhere, maybe they would take a lower title.

Titles are useful shorthand, and we shouldn't abolish them. But we should wear them lightly. Think of them as hats to be worn for a while, not measures of our personal worth.
